Higher Wood Density Lowers Feedstock Cost and Has Minimal Impact on Biomass Conversion to Biofuels.

Poplar and other woody feedstocks have the potential to provide up to 200 million tons of biomass per year that can be converted to liquid fuels. Most forestry strategies that aim to increase biomass productivity per hectare rely on short rotation plantations of fast-growing varieties. The improvement of the wood density as a key trait itself has largely been overlooked. We evaluated natural variation in wood density across a population of genetically diverse Populus trichocarpa trees grown in a common garden. Wood density varies greatly within this population but is heritable; higher wood den

Volatile emission and biosynthesis in endophytic fungi colonizing black poplar leaves.

Plant volatiles play a major role in plant-insect interactions as defense compounds or attractants for insect herbivores. Recent studies have shown that endophytic fungi are also able to produce volatiles and this raises the question of whether these fungal volatiles influence plant-insect interactions. Here, we qualitatively investigated the volatiles released from 13 endophytic fungal species isolated from leaves of mature black poplar (Populus nigra) trees. The volatile blends of these endophytes grown on agar medium consist of typical fungal compounds, including aliphatic alcohols, ketones

Cadophora margaritata sp. nov. and other fungi associated with the longhorn beetles Anoplophora glabripennis and Saperda carcharias in Finland.

Symbiosis with microbes is crucial for survival and development of wood-inhabiting longhorn beetles (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae). Thus, knowledge of the endemic fungal associates of insects would facilitate risk assessment in cases where a new invasive pest occupies the same ecological niche. However, the diversity of fungi associated with insects remains poorly understood. The aim of this study was to investigate fungi associated with the native large poplar longhorn beetle (Saperda carcharias) and the recently introduced Asian longhorn beetle (Anoplophora glabripennis) infesting hardwood trees

PagCOBL5 Integrates Transcriptional and Spatial Cues to Confer G-Layer Deposition in Poplar.

Angiosperm trees reorient their stems by producing tension wood (TW), a specialised xylem that generates contractile force. TW fibres develop a gelatinous (G) layer rich in cellulose, yet the molecular mechanisms governing G-layer formation remain poorly understood. COBRA-like genes encode glycosylphosphatidylinositol (GPI)-anchored proteins known to regulate cellulose deposition. Here, we functionally characterised PagCOBL5 in hybrid poplar (Populus alba × P. glandulosa) by identifying its upstream regulator and interaction partner. PagCOBL5 was preferentially expressed in mature xylem fibres

Proprioception drives tension wood formation for autotropic straightening and postural control in trees.

Postural control in plant shoots relies on gravi- and photo- tropisms, driven by angular sensing and actuated by differential growth or reaction wood formation (tension wood in dicots). Control theory and kinematical models predict that posture stabilization additionally requires active counter-curving. This led to the hypothesis that plants actively straighten through proprioception (curvature sensing) driving autotropic actuation. However, passive springback can be involved, especially in woody stems, and direct conclusive experimental evidence for proprioception-driven autotropism has been

Plant Sex Influences Cadmium Detoxification via Mediating Cadmium Transport and Cell Wall Modification Under Different Nitrogen Forms.

Although the link between cadmium (Cd) and N availability has been studied, the mechanisms of Cd transport and detoxification in dioecious plants remain underexplored. This study examined sex-specific Cd transport, accumulation, and cell wall detoxification in Populus cathayana using histochemical assays, ecophysiological measures, energy-dispersive X-ray microanalysis, and transcriptomic analyses. Bark accumulated 85% Cd in the shoots of both sexes, while leaf Cd was highest in females under NH4 + supply. Root Cd accumulation was greater with NO3 - than NH4 +, with 40%-60% of Cd sequestrated

Production of Aromatic Compounds by Catalytic Depolymerization of Technical and Downstream Biorefinery Lignins.

Lignocellulosic materials are promising alternatives to non-renewable fossil sources when producing aromatic compounds. Lignins from Populus salicaceae. Pinus radiata and Pinus pinaster from industrial wastes and biorefinery effluents were isolated and characterized. Lignin was depolymerized using homogenous (NaOH) and heterogeneous (Ni-, Cu- or Ni-Cu-hydrotalcites) base catalysis and catalytic hydrogenolysis using Ru/C. When homogeneous base catalyzed depolymerization (BCD) and Ru/C hydrogenolysis were combined on poplar lignin, the aromatics amount was ca. 11 wt.%. Monomer distributions chan

Mitigating traffic-derived NOx in urban areas: Stable isotope evidence of NOx uptake by urban trees.

Quantifying the effect of urban trees on the removal of traffic-derived nitrogen oxides (NOx) is essential for mitigating air pollution. This study employed stable nitrogen isotope and oxygen isotope analyses, in combination with a Bayesian isotopic mixing model, to estimate NOx absorption by urban trees in street and park environments in Shenyang, China. Results revealed that broadleaved species exhibited higher nitrogen absorption of both soil and traffic-derived NOx compared with conifers. Sophora japonica showed the strongest absorption of traffic-derived NOx in parks with a value of 1.68

Aboveground phytochemical responses to belowground herbivory in poplar trees and the consequence for leaf herbivore preference.

Belowground (BG) herbivory can influence aboveground (AG) herbivore performance and food preference via changes in plant chemistry. Most evidence for this phenomenon derives from studies in herbaceous plants but studies in woody plants are scarce. Here we investigated whether and how BG herbivory on black poplar (Populus nigra) trees by Melolontha melolontha larvae influences the feeding preference of Lymantria dispar (gypsy moth) caterpillars. In a food choice assay, caterpillars preferred to feed on leaves from trees that had experienced attack by BG herbivores. Therefore, we investigated th

Medicinal Plants Based Products Tested on Pathogens Isolated from Mastitis Milk.

Bovine mastitis a major disease that is commonly associated with bacterial infection. The common treatment is with antibiotics administered intramammary into infected quarters of the udder. The excessive use of antibiotics leads to multidrug resistance and associated risks for human health. In this context, the search for alternative drugs based on plants has become a priority in livestock medicine. These products have a low manufacturing cost and no reports of antimicrobial resistance to these have been documented. In this context, the main objective of this study was to determine the antimic

Leaf rust infection reduces herbivore-induced volatile emission in black poplar and attracts a generalist herbivore.

Plants release complex volatile blends after separate attack by herbivores and pathogens, which play many roles in interactions with other organisms. Large perennials are often attacked by multiple enemies, but the effect of combined attacks on volatile emission is rarely studied, particularly in trees. We infested Populus nigra trees with a pathogen, the rust fungus Melampsora larici-populina, and Lymantria dispar caterpillars alone and in combination. We investigated poplar volatile emission and its regulation, as well as the behavior of the caterpillars towards volatiles from rust-infected

PuWRKY46 drives root system architecture and enhances salt tolerance in poplar.

The developmental plasticity of lateral roots (LRs) is an essential adaptive strategy for optimizing root system architecture under salt stress. However, the molecular mechanisms by which salt stress modulates LR plasticity through cell wall remodeling remain largely elusive, particularly in woody species. This study investigates the abscisic acid (ABA)-responsive transcription factor PuWRKY46 as a critical regulator of LR developmental plasticity under salt stress in Populus ussuriensis. This study integrated phenotypic characterization of transgenic overexpression and RNA interference (RNAi)

Cytokinins Promote Rust Susceptibility in Poplar by Suppressing Defence Signalling, Reducing Defence Accumulation and Reprogramming Primary Metabolism.

Cytokinins (CKs), classically recognised as plant growth regulators, are increasingly implicated in plant-microbe interactions. Studies in herbaceous plants suggest that CKs can function as signalling molecules with dual roles in plant defence, either restricting or facilitating pathogen infection. However, their roles in tree-pathogen interactions remain largely unexplored. Here, we investigated CK induction, metabolism, and functions in black poplar (Populus nigra) during infection by the rust fungus Melampsora larici-populina, an obligate biotrophic pathogen. We found that most isoprenoid C

Functional memory of drought affects leaf chemical defenses and microbial interactions in aspen.

Drought is an important driver of tree mortality, but its long-term impacts on trait expression remain poorly understood. Leaves are a key interface at which trees respond to abiotic stress, and foliar traits such as chemical defenses and microbial communities may play a role in determining post-drought resilience. We tested whether prior-year drought leaves a persistent imprint on leaf traits in Populus tremuloides Michx. Using a 3-year common garden experiment with controlled water limitation, we measured two classes of defensive phenolics-salicinoid phenolic glycosides (SPGs) and condensed

Sexual dimorphism in poplar plants: Resource trade-offs and sex-specific strategic responses during leaf senescence.

Leaf senescence is a critical developmental transition that drives nutrient remobilization, profoundly impacting plant fitness and forest productivity. In dioecious plants, divergent reproductive costs drive sex-specific life-history strategies, yet how these fundamental differences are rewired at the senescence level remains largely unknown. Here, integrating physiological, hormonal, metabolomic, and transcriptomic analyses, we reveal a striking sexual dimorphism in the senescence trajectories of the perennial tree Populus deltoides. Males execute a "fast-recycling" strategy characterized by

French Propolis Caffeic Acid Derivatives Protect Skeletal Muscle from Oxidative Damages.

Propolis produced by honeybees, Apis mellifera, has been valued since ancient times as a remedy for different ailments for its broad medicinal properties. This wide range of biological activities may arise from the production of distinct propolis types within the hive, each serving specific functions and containing unique molecular compositions. In this study, we investigated the effects of four propolis types-masonry, sealing, brood-protection, and intruder-neutralizing-on hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative injury in human skeletal muscle cells. Among these, only brood-protection prop

Tree failure - A natural phenomenon with forensic implications.

Tree failure, or summer branch drop, refers to situations where large branches or whole trees may unexpectedly drop on unsuspecting victims. On occasion, this involves vehicles impacted by falling overhanging trees or branches. To study this phenomenon further review of the Forensic Science SA, Adelaide, Australia, database and an internet news search were undertaken over a 20 year period from March 2004 to February 2024 for all cases where unexpected accidental deaths in South Australia had been caused by falling branches or trees. There were six cases (age range 12-63 years; average 39 years

An ectomycorrhizal fungus alters sensitivity to jasmonate, salicylate, gibberellin, and ethylene in host roots.

The phytohormones jasmonate, gibberellin, salicylate, and ethylene regulate an interconnected reprogramming network integrating root development with plant responses against microbes. The establishment of mutualistic ectomycorrhizal symbiosis requires the suppression of plant defense responses against fungi as well as the modification of root architecture and cortical cell wall properties. Here, we investigated the contribution of phytohormones and their crosstalk to the ontogenesis of ectomycorrhizae (ECM) between grey poplar (Populus tremula x alba) roots and the fungus Laccaria bicolor. Sequencing the genome of Marssonina brunnea reveals fungus-poplar co-evolution.

BACKGROUND: The fungus Marssonina brunnea is a causal pathogen of Marssonina leaf spot that devastates poplar plantations by defoliating susceptible trees before normal fall leaf drop. RESULTS: We sequence the genome of M. brunnea with a size of 52 Mb assembled into 89 scaffolds, representing the first sequenced Dermateaceae genome. By inoculating this fungus onto a poplar hybrid clone, we investigate how M. brunnea interacts and co-evolves with its host to colonize poplar leaves. While a handful of virulence genes in M. brunnea, mostly from the LysM family, are detected to up-regulate during

A biofilm reactor packed with aspen wood and polyurethane sponge for biological manganese(II) oxidation and minor metal recovery.

Biogenic manganese oxides (MnOx) are promising agents for the removal and recovery of minor metals from water. However, cultivating heterotrophic Mn(II)-oxidizing microorganisms in non-sterile bioreactors remains difficult, and few continuous-flow reactor designs have been evaluated for their ability to recover minor metals under such conditions. In this study, we operated a laboratory-scale biofilm reactor packed with aspen wood and a polyurethane sponge for 469 d to evaluate its feasibility for biogenic MnOx production. Aspen wood served as a solid-phase organic substrate, the biodegradation
