Keeping people with dementia moving in hospital to reduce pressure ulcer risk: complexities in care.

People with dementia occupy up to 21% of UK hospital beds at any one time and are at increased risk of developing pressure ulcers. Keeping moving is a fundamental component of pressure ulcer prevention. However, the physical, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia can affect a person's ability to 'keep moving' during a hospital admission. These symptoms are currently underaddressed in pressure ulcer prevention guidance and practice. This article aims to fill that gap by exploring how these dementia-related symptoms increase pressure ulcer risk and examining the complexities of keep

The Meaning of Together: Exploring Transference and Countertransference in Palliative Care Settings.

Establishing an empathic clinical relationship is a cornerstone of high-quality palliative care. More than simply approaching patients with a pleasant affect or "being nice," we propose that skilled clinicians routinely employ distinct psychological elements when creating effective bonds with seriously ill patients and their families. Palliative care involvement has been shown to improve a variety of outcomes for patients with serious cancer, and yet the components of this salutary effect are still becoming known in the literature. Many believe that a successful interpersonal relationship is t

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Modeling and prediction of psychological disorders is a hot topic in current research. Neural networks are very important factors in improving the accuracy and precision ratios of the models which are developed for the prediction of the psychological disorders. An upgraded neural network prediction model of psychological diseases was suggested in order to attain an optimum prediction effect of psychological disorders. First, it analyzes the current progress in predicting the psychological barrier, finds the current limitations of various psychological barrier forecast model, collects the histo

Speech therapy for psychogenic voice disorder: a survey of current practice and training.

A survey of speech therapists in the United Kingdom showed that they usually undertook the treatment of psychogenic voice disorders. Their pre-qualification education had provided advice that was usually reflected accurately in the experience they gained in practice, though during their education about a third had lacked any opportunity to treat or observe psychogenic voice disorders. The appropriate duration of treatment appears to be in doubt. At present, speech therapists acquire many of the psychological skills required for treatment after qualification. There is a substantial need for pos

The connections of physical and psychosocial symptoms among patients with terminal illnesses: A network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Patients with terminal illnesses have different symptoms. The goal of palliative care is to alleviate the suffering induced by these symptoms. Available research on symptoms has focused on their prevalence or identification of clusters. Little is known about the central symptoms contributing to the maintenance of the whole system of symptoms or the mechanism of influence between symptoms, particularly between physical and psychosocial symptoms. AIM: The study used network analysis to explore symptom clusters among patients with terminal illnesses and identify the central symptoms,

Psychologic and physiologic effects of dieting in adolescents.

Obesity in adolescents has increased by 75% in the past three decades. Cross-sectional and prospective surveys have shown that a large percentage of adolescents, particularly females and even those of normal weight, diet at some time. While moderate changes in diet and exercise have been shown to be safe, significant psychologic and physiologic consequences may occur with extreme or unhealthy dieting practices. Moderate dieting has been shown to be associated with negative self-esteem in some adolescents. The very act of starting any diet increases the risk of eating disorders in adolescent gi

Baropsychology.

Baropsychology may be defined as the study of psychological or emotional causative, contributory and confounding factors, comorbid conditions, and complications of overweight/obesity, as well as the psychological and behavioural interventions used as part of corrective and curative therapy. This brief communication defines, describes and details the concept of baropsychology. It attempts to bring together the various psychosocial and person-centred aspects of obesity care under a single umbrella. This will help ensure focussed and fruitful application of these principles in clinical bariatric

Prevalence of sexual and physical abuse in patients with obstructed defecation: impact on biofeedback treatment.

BACKGROUND: obstructed defecation is one of the most common subtypes of constipation, and it is frequently responsive to biofeedback treatment. AIMS: since a history of sexual and physical abuse may be present in patients with obstructed defecation, we assessed the incidence of abuse history in patients with obstructed defecation referred to a general gastroenterology practice, and whether such a history may lead to a different outcome of biofeedback training in these patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: one hundred and twenty-one patients (17 men, 104 women, age 53 +/- 15 years) with obstructed

How many Slovenian family practice attendees are victims of intimate partner violence? A re-evaluation cross-sectional study report.

BACKGROUND: Intimate partner violence (IPV) can be considered a leading public health problem affecting approximately 50% of women during the course of their lifetimes. This study was carried out with the aim of re-testing the prevalence data and providing sufficient grounds for decision-makers in family medicine in Slovenia to adopt much-needed protocols for IPV management in the field. METHODS: In January 2012, every tenth general practitioner (GP) registered in Slovenia, of a total of 958, was invited to participate in a multi-centre cross-sectional study, and 9.4% of them, working in 90 f

Examining the Effectiveness of Breathwork to Improve Resilience and Psychological Wellbeing While Reducing Anxiety, Depression, Stress, and Insomnia in Paramedicine Students: A Single-Blind Randomised Controlled Trial.

Paramedicine students experience disproportionately high rates of anxiety, depression, stress, and insomnia compared to the general population, placing them at risk of post-traumatic stress disorder and long-term psychological distress. Breathwork has emerged as a promising self-regulation intervention that may enhance resilience and wellbeing while reducing symptoms of mental illness. This randomised controlled trial (RCT) evaluated the effectiveness of the A52 Breath Method, a structured breathwork protocol, in improving mental health and resilience among student paramedics. A single-blind p

Background: As the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic progressed globally, school closures and home quarantine may cause an increase in problematic Internet use among students in universities. Such a traumatic stress event may also contribute to the development of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depressive, and anxiety symptoms. This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of PTSD, depressive, and anxiety symptoms as well as the predictive role of problematic Internet use in the above-mentioned psychological problems in university students. A mechanistic approach to developing effective, acceptable, and accessible psychological therapies for young people and emerging adults.

Three-quarters of all mental health problems start before the age of 24 and yet outcomes from standard psychological therapies such as CBT are poorer for this age group compared to working age and older adults. More effective, acceptable, and accessible psychological interventions are needed during this period of peak onset. They offer the potential to change the longer-term trajectory for young people. A key challenge is how best to develop these treatments. In this paper we set out ten steps to facilitate translational treatment development that focuses on understanding and targeting psychol

Researching the psychological therapies in prison: considerations and future recommendations.

PURPOSE: The psychological therapies are widely considered within the forensic literature as holding a useful role in the prison system, however, despite this, very little research into the psychological therapies has taken place. Further, where research is carried out, it is often associated with the need for evidence-based practice (EBP), involving quantification and randomization. The paper aims to discuss these issues. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: This paper will initially introduce the importance of research into the psychological therapies in prison, followed by a consideration of EBP w
