Railway curve squeal prediction using environmental variables.

INTRODUCTION: Curve squeal is a loud tonal noise from railway traffic that contributes to environmental noise pollution. Squealing arises from friction-induced vibrations in the wheel-rail contact during vehicle curving under specific friction conditions. Environmental factors are known to influence these friction conditions and, consequently, the tendency of squeal occurrence. This study investigates whether environmental variables measured from the wayside of the track can be used to predict curve squeal using machine learning models. METHODS: Separate prediction models were developed for l

An interpretable machine learning framework with data-informed imaging biomarkers for diagnosis and prediction of Alzheimer's disease.

Machine learning methods based on imaging and other clinical data have shown great potential for improving the early and accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, for most deep learning models, especially those including high-dimensional imaging data, the decision-making process remains largely opaque which limits clinical applicability. Explainable Boosting Machines (EBMs) are inherently interpretable machine learning models, but are typically applied to low-dimensional data. In this study, we propose an interpretable machine learning framework that integrates data-driven featu

Validating machine learning approaches for prediction of donor related complication in microsurgical breast reconstruction: a retrospective cohort study.

Autologous reconstruction using abdominal flaps remains the most popular method for breast reconstruction worldwide. We aimed to evaluate a prediction model using machine-learning methods and to determine which factors increase abdominal flap donor site complications with logistic regression. We evaluated the predictive ability of different machine learning packages, reviewing a cohort of breast reconstruction patients who underwent abdominal flaps. We analyzed 13 treatment variables for effects on the abdominal donor site complication rates. To overcome data imbalances, random over sampling e

Gradient boosting machine for survival prediction in studies with general failure-time outcome-dependent sampling design.

Outcome-dependent sampling (ODS) designs are widely used in epidemiological and biomedical research as cost-effective alternatives to full cohort studies. While existing research has focused on parameter estimation and inference under specific models, survival prediction in ODS settings remains underexplored. In this paper, we propose a gradient boosting machine tailored for survival prediction in studies conducted using general failure-time ODS designs. Our approach integrates a weighting scheme to correct for sampling bias and improves predictive accuracy. We introduce a weighted empirical r

Automated CLL cell population detection using a weakly supervised approach and CLL MRD flow cytometry data.

Minimal/measurable residual disease detection is routinely performed as part of post-diagnostic treatment plans for many types of cancer, for which multiparameter flow cytometry is one possible modality frequently used. We propose a machine learning approach for binary prediction of minimal residual disease status with flow cytometry data. Our method involves the projection of cells from the original feature space to a low-dimensional embedding in which cells are clustered by similarity, and the cluster-wise cell proportions are used for prediction as well as regression. This is a weakly super

Predicting blood pressure variability in hemodialysis using an explainable boosting machine model.

BACKGROUND: Intradialytic hypotension and hypertension significantly increase cardiovascular risk in hemodialysis patients, highlighting the need for effective monitoring systems. By predicting systolic blood pressure (SBP) values, monitoring capabilities can be improved beyond traditional event classification. Despite this potential advantage, current predictive models report a consistent error range (11-13 mmHg) and operate as black boxes. This study aims to develop a transparent SBP prediction model and evaluate its generalizability. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed data from 524
