The effect of quinolinic acid administered during pregnancy on liver cells of rat offspring (ultrastructural investigation).

Liver cells of rat's offspring were ultrastructurally examined after administering quinolinic acid to mothers intraperitoneally in a dose of 60 mmol or 100 mmol, once daily, throughout the entire gestation period. Liver tissue specimens were taken on day 5 after birth from experimental and control animals. Administration of quinolinic acid resulted in a marked proliferation of smooth elements of endoplasmic reticulum in liver cells of their offspring, which indicated microsomal enzymatic induction. Simultaneously, injuries of liver cells of varying intensity were observed, which were dose-depe

Erythropoiesis in pregnancy.

There is a dramatic increase in total blood volume during healthy pregnancy. The disproportionate expansion in plasma volume (50%) and red cell mass (18-25% depending on iron status) results in a decrease in haemoglobin concentration maximal at 32 weeks gestation. This should not fall below 11 g/dl at any time during pregnancy. Deficiency of essential haematinics arising from increased requirements and inadequate intake may have far reaching effects on mother, fetus and neonate which bear no relationship to the impaired oxygen carrying capacity of the reduced cell mass. Pathological anaemia of

[Ebstein's anomaly of the tricuspid valve following prenatal exposure to lithium].

An 18-year-old man visited the outpatient cardiology clinic because of a cardiac murmur found at a medical examination for military service. An Ebstein's anomaly was diagnosed, with tricuspid valve insufficiency. Exposure to lithium in utero was established. Literature reports indicate an association between exposure to lithium in utero and cardiac anomalies, notably Ebstein's anomaly.

Role of radiation-induced mutations in multigeneration carcinogenesis.

Parental exposure to radiation increases the incidence of tumours in resultant F1 offspring. Induced lung tumours are inherited, as they are dominant mutations, indicating that germ line mutation causes cancer in progeny. This finding is now confirmed in three different strains of mice (ICR, LT, and N5). Most of the tumours induced in offspring were transplantable (malignant); furthermore, preliminary experiments reveal involvement of some known and novel oncogenes in these tumours. A germ line mutation causing a tumour ('tumour mutation') is weakly carcinogenic by itself, but it is strongly e

Identifying established human placental markers of schizophrenia in rodents after gestational ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol exposure†.

Placental complications resulting in fetal growth restriction have been associated with dysregulated placental gene expression tied to an increased risk of schizophrenia. In rat offspring, it has been demonstrated that ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol exposure in pregnancy results in fetal growth restriction and schizophrenia-like phenotypes (e.g., decreased pre-pulse inhibition of the acoustic startle response). However, it remains elusive if prenatal ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol exposure induces this schizophrenia signature of placental gene expression. Therefore, our objective was to determine if these e

Maternal smoking during pregnancy and childhood seizure: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal smoking during pregnancy is associated with adverse outcomes, but its relationship with childhood seizures remains unclear. Previous studies have produced inconsistent findings regarding the link between maternal smoking during pregnancy and seizure risk in offspring. We aim to investigate the association between maternal smoking during pregnancy and seizures in offspring through systematic review and meta-analysis. METHODS: We conducted a search across multiple electronic databases such as PubMed, Embase, ScienceDirect, Scopus, and Web of Science. The search was performed

Using facial morphology traits related to attention problems in children to identify prenatal exposure history.

Brain development and face morphology are related through underlying biological mechanisms, namely embryonic neuroectodermal processes. This study examined whether the facial parameters identified in children can help understand the neurodevelopmental impact of prenatal exposures on child behavior. We studied 9- to 10-year-old children of European descent from Generation R Study (N = 2,779) with three-dimensional face photographs. With an AI model of a 3D graph autoencoder, each facial shape was compressed into 200 traits representing facial morphology. We examined associations of traits with

Maternal infection during pregnancy and the risk of childhood cancer: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Maternal infections during pregnancy may increase the risk of childhood cancer (CC) in offspring by affecting foetal immunity and genetics. Existing evidence seems inconclusive, necessitating a comprehensive review to understand this association. We aimed to evaluate the risk of various CC outcomes following prenatal exposure to different types of maternal infections. METHODS: We searched Medline, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Library, and bibliographies for relevant studies from inception to October 2025. The study protocol was registered in PROSPERO (ID:CRD42023483706). We in

Prenatal and Preweaning Environmental Effects upon Pubertal Development and Sperm Production.

This chapter examines the role of early life perturbations upon the developing bull calf. Surprisingly, we observe effects upon sexual development and sperm quality, including sperm morphology, as early as the periconception period (-60 to 23 days post conception). Similarly, during postnatal life (prior to 6mths of age) dietary perturbations retard sexual development and sperm quality. Herein we discuss the ontology of development and examine why these periods of development are fundamental to fertility in the bull. Ultimately, this leads to recommendations for changes to current husbandry pr

The impact of cannabinoids on reproductive function.

IN BRIEF: This review article summarizes the effects of pre- or peri-conceptual exposure to cannabinoids on female and male reproductive function, along with pregnancy outcomes from 2014 to 2024. In particular, it addresses the gaps in knowledge regarding the specific contributions of the major constituents of cannabis, THC and CBD, on reproduction. ABSTRACT: With increased use of cannabis worldwide, especially in our young adult population, there is a great impetus to understand the impact of cannabis and its constituents (i.e. THC and CBD) on pregnancy, fetal outcomes and male and female re

Prenatal maternal stress and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes: a narrative review.

INTRODUCTION: Maternal stress during pregnancy has been increasingly recognized as a significant factor influencing fetal development, with potential long-term effects on neurodevelopmental outcomes in offspring. Understanding the mechanisms and implications of prenatal stress exposure is crucial for informing preventative and interventional strategies in perinatal care. CONTENT: This narrative review synthesizes findings from epidemiological, neurobiological, and clinical research on the long-term consequences of prenatal maternal stress. It explores a broad spectrum of stressors - including

Impact of perinatal risk factors on pediatric asthma: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Childhood asthma is a common chronic disease in children, which has a double negative impact on children's physical and mental health, and also brings a heavy economic burden to children's families. Maternal indicators during the perinatal period are the key inducement for the occurrence and severity of asthma in children. However, people's lack of awareness of the risk factors that may affect the occurrence of childhood asthma during the perinatal period and effective intervention measures have become the reasons and loopholes for the rising prevalence of childhood asthma. From parents to offspring: a comprehensive review of antidepressant-linked reproductive risks†.

While antidepressants are routinely prescribed to manage depression, their long-term ramifications on reproductive health and the well-being of offspring are still shrouded in ambiguity. This review meticulously sifted through clinical trials pinpointing antidepressant usage among individuals of childbearing potential, highlighting safety concerns regarding reproductive health and the subsequent effects on offspring. We delved into studies spanning from January 1, 2000, to December 30, 2023, inclusively analyzing randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, and case-control studies. Our synth

Dissecting the networks underlying diverse brain disorders after prenatal glucocorticoid overexposure.

New human life begins in the uterus in a period of both extreme plasticity and sensitivity to environmental disturbances. The fetal stage is also a vital period for central nervous system development, with experiences at this point profoundly and permanently shaping brain structure and function. As such, some brain disorders may originate in utero. Glucocorticoids, a class of essential stress hormones, play indispensable roles in fetal development, but overexposure may have lasting impacts on the brain. In this review, we summarize data from recent clinical and non-clinical studies regarding a

The high-expression programming of SR-B1 mediates adrenal dysfunction in female offspring induced by prenatal caffeine exposure and its cholesterol accumulation mechanism.

The cholesterol metabolism and homeostasis of adrenal are important for steroidogenesis. Our previous studies found that prenatal caffeine exposure (PCE) can inhibit adrenal steroidogenesis in offspring, but whether the mechanism is related to local imbalance of cholesterol metabolism remains unknown. Here, we found that PCE inhibited adrenal steroidogenesis and increased the expression of cell pyroptosis and inflammatory-related indicators (NLRP3, caspase-1 and IL-1β) in female adult offspring rats, and at the same time, the cholesterol levels in serum and adrenal gland also significantly inc
