Gray matter volume covariance patterns associated with gait speed in older adults: a multi-cohort MRI study.

Accelerated gait decline in aging is associated with many adverse outcomes, including an increased risk for falls, cognitive decline, and dementia. Yet, the brain structures associated with gait speed, and how they relate to specific cognitive domains, are not well-understood. We examined structural brain correlates of gait speed, and how they relate to processing speed, executive function, and episodic memory in three non-demented and community-dwelling older adult cohorts (Overall N = 352), using voxel-based morphometry and multivariate covariance-based statistics. In all three cohorts, we i

Multimodal emotion processing in autism spectrum disorders: an event-related potential study.

This study sought to describe heterogeneity in emotion processing in autism spectrum disorders (ASD) via electrophysiological markers of perceptual and cognitive processes that underpin emotion recognition across perceptual modalities. Behavioral and neural indicators of emotion processing were collected, as event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded while youth with ASD completed a standardized facial and vocal emotion identification task. Children with ASD exhibited impaired emotion recognition performance for adult faces and child voices, with a subgroup displaying intact recognition. La

White matter integrity is associated with cognitive processing in patients treated for a posterior fossa brain tumor.

Children treated for posterior fossa tumors experience reduced cognitive processing speed and, after imaging, show damage to white matter (WM) tracts in the brain. This study explores relationships between white matter microstructure, assessed by fractional anisotropy (FA), and speed of cognitive processing using tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS). At 36 months after treatment with radiotherapy and chemotherapy, 40 patients completed an MRI examination and neuropsychological evaluation. Patients were matched with healthy control subjects based on age, sex, and race. Individual FA values wer

Moderating Effects of Cortisol on Neural-Cognitive Association in Cognitively Normal Elderly Subjects.

Cortisol homeostasis is important for healthy brain and cognitive aging. The aim of the current study is to investigate the role of serum cortisol levels in the relationship between regional brain volumes and cognitive processing speed in a group of cognitively normal elderly subjects. Forty-one healthy elderly participants were from a parallel longitudinal study. The reported data in this study reflects baseline measurements. Whole-brain anatomical scanning was performed using a 3.0 Tesla Philips Medical Systems Achieva scanner. Cognitive processing speed was assessed by the digit-symbol and

An Ultrasonic Micro-Tool Assisted Platform for Post-Processing of Micrometer-Scale Copper Wires.

Acoustic microactuation technology has emerged as an effective approach for fabrication of micro- and nanoscale objects, enabling precise processing and shaping control of microscale materials by efficiently transmitting ultrasonic vibration energy and focusing energy locally. In this work, the proposed platform is regarded as an acoustically driven micromachine, in which ultrasonic excitation acts as the primary microactuation mechanism. Micrometer-scale copper wires are widely used in microelectronics and precision manufacturing. However, their small dimensions and low rigidity make fixation

Bleuler revisited: psychomotor slowing in schizophrenia as part of a catatonic symptom cluster.

In schizophrenia, psychomotor slowing and stereotypy are poorly delineated from cognitive deficits like diminished processing speed. Inpatients' performance outcomes on a line-copying task, a task assessing stereotypy and a processing-speed task are compared. Results suggested that psychomotor slowing and stereotypy are related and may represent a catatonic symptom cluster.

The double-deficit hypothesis: a comprehensive analysis of the evidence.

The double-deficit hypothesis of developmental dyslexia proposes that deficits in phonological processing and naming speed represent independent sources of dysfunction in dyslexia. The present article is a review of the evidence for the double-deficit hypothesis, including a discussion of recent findings related to the hypothesis. Studies in this area have been characterized by variability in methodology--how dyslexia is defined and identified, and how dyslexia subtypes are classified. Such variability sets limitations on the extent to which conclusions may be drawn with respect to the double-

Causal models of reading disability: a twin study.

The genetic and environmental relationships among measures of phoneme awareness, naming speed, Intelligence Quotient (IQ), and reading performance were investigated in 623 identical and fraternal twin pairs tested in the Colorado Learning Disabilities Research Center. A Cholesky decomposition analysis of these measures provided evidence supporting the double deficit hypothesis that difficulties in phonological processing and naming speed both contribute to reading disability. Additionally, the model revealed marginally significant genetic and significant non-shared environmental relationships

Neurocognitive profile analysis in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Although neurocognitive deficits have been identified in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), little research has focused on whether these deficits are generalized or specific to a given cognitive domain. We assessed the relative strengths and weaknesses of 26 adult patients with OCD compared to 38 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers in domains of motor, verbal memory, visual memory, reasoning/problem solving, processing speed processing, and language. Profile analysis revealed an overall neurocognitive deficit of 1/2 standard deviation in OCD patients versus healthy volunteers, with relat

Response time in adults with a history of language difficulties.

UNLABELLED: The purpose of the study was to investigate speed of processing in college students with a history of problems with language. Affected individuals (n=16) were identified through a self-reported history of language and/or reading difficulties, and compared to a group of 16 unaffected individuals. Measures of language ability and a battery of response time tasks were administered. Results showed that the affected group had lower language performance and slower response time than the unaffected group. Better language performance was associated with faster response time, and this relat

A cognitive profile of body dysmorphic disorder: An investigation using the WAIS-IV.

OBJECTIVES: The cognitive-behavioral model of body dysmorphic disorder (BDD) implicates impaired cognition; yet existing evidence of cognitive impairment in the disorder is often inconsistent. To date, cognitive performance in BDD has not been measured utilizing the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Fourth Edition (WAIS-IV), a gold standard cognitive assessment in clinical settings. Accordingly, this study compared WAIS-IV performance between individuals with BDD and healthy controls. METHODS: Participants included 59 BDD patients and 56 controls. Cognitive performance was evaluated via the

Vulvar cicatricial pemphigoid of childhood.

OBJECTIVES: Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic condition characterised by widespread pain, and cognitive difficulties represent one of the most common symptoms of FM. However, subjective cognitive complaints (SCC) may not necessarily indicate significant abnormalities in objective cognitive performances, and there is limited research investigating the relationship between these two aspects. This study thus aims to analyse the differences between SCC and objective cognitive performance in FM patients and to explore their associations. METHODS: A total of 32 FM female patients (age: 50.91±7.06; yea

Investigation of the CADM2 polymorphism rs17518584 in memory and executive functions measures in a cohort of young healthy individuals.

The common polymorphism rs17518584, near the cell adhesion molecule 2 gene (CADM2), was previously identified as playing a role in information processing speed in a genome-wide association study of executive functions and processing speed performed in a cohort of non-demented older adults. In this study, we investigated this polymorphism in a younger population cohort (≤30 years old, median age 19 years), with no known memory or psychiatric disorders, for which we had phenotyped all participants for memory function (n = 514), and a subset of the participants for executive functions (n = 338),
