Microbiological evaluation of LOCATOR® Legacy attachments: A cross-sectional clinical study.

OBJECTIVE: This retrospective cross-sectional study aimed to evaluate quantitatively the oral microbiome in the tri-lobe central cavity of Locator Legacy attachment and verify whether it harbors a different, potentially more pathogenic, bacterial spectrum than the adjacent edentulous ridge. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Edentulous patients rehabilitated with implant overdentures using Locator Legacy attachments were recruited for this study. The clinical examination comprised probing depths, mobility, peri-implant, and periodontal health along with intraoral swabs for microbiological evaluation, pol

Palateless Maxillary Implant-Supported Overdentures: A Review of Patient Satisfaction and Clinical Outcomes Along With Case Series.

Implant-supported overdenture is a lifesaver treatment plan for edentulous patients. Implant numbers and positions in the maxilla and mandible are controversial, but in more studies on a minimum number of implants, which is at least four implants in the maxilla and two implants in the mandible, there is a consensus. Also, the attachment system (splinted vs. unsplinted) does not have a significant effect on bone loss, implant and prosthesis survival rate, and clinical complications. Palateless maxillary overdentures supported on four implants may improve taste sensation and reduce gag reflex wi

Rehabilitation of Maxillary Bilateral Regional Odontodysplasia in a 7-Year-Old Child Using Modified Essix Retainer.

Regional odontodysplasia (RO), also called ghost teeth, is a rare nonhereditary developmental dental anomaly affecting the epidermal and mesenchymal tissues associated with the development of tooth which can affect both primary and permanent dentition. It can affect the child's overall quality of life and sometimes may lead to skeletal malocclusion. Management of such patients requires a multidisciplinary approach. Essix retainers are being widely used as retention appliances. Various modifications of this appliance are also being attempted. Thus, this article aims to focus on the use of Essix

The effects of microprocessor prosthetic knee use in early rehabilitation: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knees (MPKs) improve safety, stability, and mobility for people with transfemoral amputation. Despite these benefits, MPKs are often not used for people in early rehabilitation. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of a study that compares MPKs and nonmicroprocessor knees (NMPKs) for people with recent transfemoral amputation and report on health outcomes after 3 months of use. Investigators hypothesized that MPK users would have better outcomes than NMPK users. DESIGN: Pilot randomized controlled study. SETTING: Institutional laboratory. PA

The early results of joint-sparing proximal tibial replacement for primary bone tumours, using extracortical plate fixation.

This paper describes the preliminary results of a proximal tibial endoprosthesis which spares the knee joint and enables retention of the natural articulation by replacing part of the tibial metaphysis and diaphysis. In eight patients who had a primary malignant bone tumour of the proximal tibia, the distal stem, which had a hydroxyapatite-coated collar to improve fixation, was cemented into the medullary canal. The proximal end had hydroxyapatite-coated extracortical plates which were secured to the remaining proximal tibial metaphysis using cortical screws. The mean age of the patients at op

Incorporating Stud Attachments in the Bar Design for an Implant-Supported Overdenture.

Bone resorption following tooth loss might compromise retention, stability, and support of conventional removable prostheses, and for this reason, implant-supported overdentures are suggested as a viable alternative for completely edentulous patients. Bars, telescopic attachments, or stud attachments have been used to provide retention through a different mechanism of action based on specific design characteristics. The purpose of this report is to thoroughly describe the applied protocol for the fabrication of an implant overdenture supported by two bars incorporating stud attachments. A 67-y

Implant-associated Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (IMTI) in long-term, well-fixed implants.

BACKGROUND: Orthopedic device infections caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, including Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI), are rare and peculiar due to its poor adherence to implant surface and weak ability of biofilm formation. We present successful treatment of 2 cases of implant associated Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection (IMTI) by meticulous surgical debridement and long-term anti-tubercular chemotherapy with retention of implant. CASE DESCRIPTIONS: Case 1 : A case of Culture-Negative PJI, 4 years after left total hip replacement (THR) caused by M. tuberculosis. The patient presen

Prosthetic Rehabilitation of a Post-mucormycosis Maxillectomy Defect Using a Maxillary Hollow Obturator and Complete Denture: A Case Report.

Mucormycosis is an opportunistic fungal infection that severely impacts immunocompromised patients. Invasive mucormycosis tends to require surgical procedures like maxillectomy, leading to a complex oro-nasal communication and a severe compromise of oral function, speech, and esthetics. The following case report describes the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient after maxillectomy post-mucormycosis. A maxillary complete denture with a closed hollow bulb obturator was constructed to restore oral function, facilitate speech, and improve facial esthetics. The impression-making technique was met

Custom Cast Ball Attachments Used on Outdated Implants to Restore a Maxillary Implant-Supported Overdenture.

The lack of compatible prosthetic components can be a complication during oral rehabilitation using outdated implants. The aim of the present clinical report was to describe an alternative technique for the fabrication of a maxillary implant-supported overdenture in a patient with 20-year-old dental implants using castable spherical patterns and ball attachments. The patient had been wearing a relined bar/clip overdenture in the mandible on 4 external-hexagon dental implants and a relined complete denture in the maxilla on 4 internal-hexagon implants due to abutment screw fracture inside of th

Finite element analysis and clinical complications in mandibular implant-overdentures opposing maxillary dentures.

Denture fracture is a common clinical complication caused by improper material selection, design, or fabrication technique. This study aimed to investigate the effect of two attachment systems on fracture risk of the implant-overdentures (IOD) via finite element analysis (FEA), using the force distributions obtained from patients' occlusal analyses and to compare the obtained results with the clinical complications associated with these attachments. A three-dimensional jaw model comprised of the edentulous bones was constructed. Three types of mandibular prostheses including complete denture (

Arthroscopic Removal of a Loose Polyethylene Glenoid Component With Bone Grafting and Patch Augmentation for Glenoid Osseous Defect.

Glenoid component loosening is a common cause of failed total shoulder arthroplasty. Many different treatment options exist for the management of a symptomatic loose polyethylene glenoid component, ranging from component removal to revision arthroplasty. Arthroscopic removal and conversion to hemiarthroplasty provides a minimally invasive management option that avoids takedown of the subscapularis and allows for humeral prosthesis retention. Frequently, however, osteolysis is encountered concomitantly leading to cavitary glenoid bone deficits at the time of glenoid implant removal, limiting bo

Assessment of Dental Implant Stability in Areas Previously Submitted to Maxillary Sinus Elevation.

This study aimed to compare the primary and secondary stability, measured by resonance frequency analysis (RFA), in implants of different lengths installed in areas submitted to maxillary sinus lift. Correlation between RFA and implant insertion torque was also assessed. Twenty implants of 9 and 11 mm were inserted in areas submitted to maxillary sinus lift. The insertion torque was measured by the Bien Air motor. Osstell, through RFA, determined the implant stability quotient (ISQ) 2 times: the day of implant installation (T1) and 90 days after implant installation (T2). No differences were o
