Localization of species cross-reactive epithelium and urothelium specific antigens in the urinary tract of the rat, mouse, hamster and guinea pig.

Antiserum from a New Zealand white rabbit raised against the saline soluble fraction of calf bladder epithelium was absorbed to produce epithelial and urothelial specific stages. With indirect immunofluorescence antiepithelial antiserum reacted with all cell layers of the urothelium of a rat, mouse, hamster and guinea pig in all regions of the urinary tract, and in the epithelium of the renal pyramid and tubules. The most intense reaction in the urothelium was seen in the superficial cells of the rat and mouse but in the intermediate cells of the guinea pig. Urothelium specific antigens were d

Dynamic analysis of CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy on magnetic resonance imaging: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Colony-stimulating factor 1 receptor (CSF1R)-related leukoencephalopathy is a rare and rapidly progressive leukoencephalopathy characterized by cognitive, motor, and neuropsychiatric symptoms, which is often misdiagnosed. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) signs and follow-up MRI of CSF1R-related leukoencephalopathy could help in establishing a diagnosis, but these features are not widely known by general neurologists. CASE PRESENTATION: A 34-year-old man was admitted for progressive weakness of the right limbs over 8 months. His father and sister had a similar clinical evolution. T

Mapping the corticoreticular pathway from cortex-wide anterograde axonal tracing in the mouse.

The corticoreticular pathway (CRP) has been implicated as an important mediator of motor recovery and rehabilitation after central nervous system damage. However, its origins, trajectory and laterality are not well understood. This study mapped the mouse CRP in comparison with the corticospinal tract (CST). We systematically searched the Allen Mouse Brain Connectivity Atlas (© 2011 Allen Institute for Brain Science) for experiments that used anterograde tracer injections into the right isocortex in mice. For each eligible experiment (N = 607), CRP and CST projection strength were quantified by

A severe form of epidermal nevus syndrome associated with brainstem and cerebellar malformations and neonatal medulloblastoma.

Here we report a boy with epidermal nevus syndrome associated with brainstem and cerebellar malformations and neonatal medulloblastoma. The patient had epidermal nevi and complicated brain malformations including macrocephaly with polymicrogyria, dysmorphic and enlarged midbrain tectum, enlarged cerebellar hemispheres with small and maloriented folia. The patient died after surgical resection of medulloblastoma which was newly recognized on MRI at 51 days of age. Postmortem pathological examinations showed very unique and bizarre malformation of the midbrain and hindbrain. The cerebellar corte

[Optic neuromyelitis: a necrotizing disease of the central nervous system].

Optic neuromyelitis is characterized by simultaneous or successive necrotizing lesions involving the optic nerves and the spinal cord. We report two females with the disease, aged 30 and 34 years old. In the latter, a neuropathological study was done. Both patients had clinical, neuroradiological and pathological features that differed from those of primary demyelinating syndromes such as multiple sclerosis. These patients illustrate the selectivity of optic nerve and spinal cord lesions. The latter involve mainly pyramidal and Goll tracts while, within the necrotizing lesions of the optic chi

Development of the corticospinal tract in Semaphorin3A- and CD24-deficient mice.

Mutations in the gene encoding the neural recognition molecule L1 result in hypoplasia of the corticospinal tract and path finding errors of corticospinal axons at the pyramidal decussation. Candidate molecules that have been implicated in L1-dependent guidance of corticospinal axons from the ventral medullary pyramids to the contralateral dorsal columns of the cervical spinal cord include Semaphorin3A and CD24. In the present study, we anterogradely labeled corticospinal axons from the sensorimotor cortex of young postnatal Semaphorin3A- and CD24-deficient mice to elucidate potential function

Space-occupying lesions of the sensori-motor region.

Successful surgery of the sensori-motor region requires precise pre- and intraoperative localization of the sensori-motor region and pyramidal tract. Important aids are the landmarks of cranio-cerebral topography, coronal suture and bregma and the sulcal anatomy of the sensori-motor region, which can be identified in CT or MR images. Due to considerable displacement and distortion of the anatomical structures, elicited by mass lesions, these aids often fail to render reliable support. In this situation, identification of the motor area can be achieved by electrical stimulation of the precentra

Psilocybin's lasting action requires pyramidal cell types and 5-HT2A receptors.

Psilocybin is a serotonergic psychedelic with therapeutic potential for treating mental illnesses1-4. At the cellular level, psychedelics induce structural neural plasticity5,6, exemplified by the drug-evoked growth and remodelling of dendritic spines in cortical pyramidal cells7-9. A key question is how these cellular modifications map onto cell-type-specific circuits to produce the psychedelics' behavioural actions10. Here we use in vivo optical imaging, chemogenetic perturbation and cell-type-specific electrophysiology to investigate the impact of psilocybin on the two main types of pyramid

Two patients with abducens nerve palsy and crossed hemiplegia (Raymond syndrome).

We report 2 patients of alternating hemiplegia with abducens nerve palsy. One patient was also complicated by contralateral supranuclear facial nerve palsy. MRI showed an infarct involving the paramedian and lateral area of the pontine basis in both patients. We considered that corticospinal tract and infraabducens nerve fibers were involved in both patients, and that the corticobulbar tract was involved in 1 patient with supranuclear facial nerve palsy. Although supranuclear facial nerve palsy was not found in the other patient, we speculated that supranucler facial nerve fibers might pass ma

Central motor conduction in ischaemic and hemorrhagic cerebral lesions.

Electrical Transcranial Cortical Stimulation was performed in 20 healthy volunteers and 14 patients having supra- or infratentorial vascular lesions. Central Conduction Time (CCT) in the Pyramidal Tract (PT) was calculated by subtraction of the Peripheral Conduction Time and the spinal synaptic delay to the Motor Evoked Potential (MEP) latency. Twelve out of fourteen patients showed prolonged MEP latencies or CCTs in the affected corporal segments. Only in 3 cases, 2 with subcortical hematoma and other with bilateral ischaemic lesions, the PT was inexcitable. Two patients, one with a discrete

Motor Neuron Diseases and Central Nervous System Tractopathies: Clinical-Radiologic Correlation and Diagnostic Approach.

White matter tracts within the central nervous system are organized into ascending and descending pathways that transmit sensory input and motor output, respectively. Tractopathy, or damage to these tracts, can impair sensory or motor functions. Motor neuron diseases are pathologic processes affecting the upper or lower motor neurons. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is the most common form of acquired motor neuron disease. Traditionally, ALS has affected upper and lower motor neurons of the extremities, torso, and head and neck. There are several ALS variants, some of which affect only the

Does transcranial electrical stimulation enhance corticospinal excitability of the motor cortex in healthy individuals? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Numerous studies have explored the effects of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES) - including anodal transcranial direct current stimulation (a-tDCS), cathodal transcranial direct current stimulation (c-tDCS), transcranial alternative current stimulation (tACS), transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) and transcranial pulsed current stimulation (tPCS) - on corticospinal excitability (CSE) in healthy populations. However, the efficacy of these techniques and their optimal parameters for producing robust results has not been studied. Thus, the aim of this systematic review was to cons

The possible role of collateral sprouting in the functional restitution of corticospinal connections after spinal hemisection.

We investigated in monkeys whether the corticospinal fibers increase their connections with lumbosacral neurons after spinal hemisection, using the retrograde horseradish peroxidase (HRP) method. In three monkeys 3.5-38 months after spinal hemisection at the lower thoracic or upper lumbar cord, HRP was injected into the lumbosacral cord unilaterally on the hemisected side at a level caudal to the lesion. Control injections were performed in two intact monkeys and in two other monkeys immediately after hemisection. In all animals, corticospinal neurons in the precentral motor cortex were labele
