Fully computational lead-development of fluoro-olefin polymerization catalysts.

Coordinative polymerization of fluorinated olefins is still a challenging task. We analyzed the catalytic properties of diimido chromium VI compounds computationally by density functional methods. It was found that reactivity predictions depend strongly on the density functional chosen for the computations. Therefore, DFT calculations were calibrated to high level wave function theory calculations. Then geometrical parameters, which can be tuned by a ligand, were scanned to elucidate their influence on the catalytic activity. Having arrived at an optimal parameter set, we randomly assembled ch

The structure and interaction energies of the weak complexes of CHClF2 and CHF3 with HCCH: a test of density functional theory methods.

The structure and interaction energies of the weak non-covalent complexes of CHClF(2) and CHF(3) with HCCH have been predicted using a number of density functional based approaches, and compared with both high resolution spectroscopic data recently reported by Sexton et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys., 2010, 12, 14263-14270], and with high level benchmark calculations reported herein. We find that this is another case where the M05 and M06 families of functionals, as well as the DFT-D approach, are competitive with the more costly wavefunction based methods. We highlight the problem of deriving u

Double C-H activation of ethane by metal-free SO2*+ radical cations.

The room-temperature C-H activation of ethane by metal-free SO(2)(*+) radical cations has been investigated under different pressure regimes by mass spectrometric techniques. The major reaction channel is the conversion of ethane to ethylene accompanied by the formation of H(2)SO(2)(*+), the radical cation of sulfoxylic acid. The mechanism of the double C-H activation, in the absence of the single activation product HSO(2)(+), is elucidated by kinetic studies and quantum chemical calculations. Under near single-collision conditions the reaction occurs with rate constant k=1.0 x 10(-9) (+/-30%)

A crossed beams and ab initio investigation on the formation of cyanodiacetylene in the reaction of cyano radicals with diacetylene.

The crossed molecular beams reaction of ground state cyano radicals (CN) with diacetylene (HCCCCH) was studied in the laboratory under single collision conditions. Combining the derived center-of-mass translational energy and angular distributions with novel electronic structure calculations, we show that the linear cyanodiacetylene molecule (HCCCCCN) is the sole reaction product. Our study provided no substantiation of two alternative products which have been suggested previously: cyanoacetylene (HCCCN), speculated to be synthesized via the exchange of the ethynyl by the cyano group, and the

The effect of electron correlation on the conformational space of melatonin.

The pineal gland hormone melatonin regulates several physiological processes including circadian rhythm and also alleviates oxidative stress-induced degenerative diseases. In spite of its important biological roles, no high level ab initio conformational study has been conducted to reveal its structural features. In this work, the conformational flexibility of melatonin was investigated using correlated ab initio calculations. Conformers, obtained previously at the Hartree-Fock level (HF/6-31G*), were fully optimized using second order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory applying the frozen cor

Diels-Alder reactions of cyclopentadiene and 9,10-dimethylanthracene with cyanoalkenes: the performance of density functional theory and Hartree-Fock calculations for the prediction of substituent effects.

The activation enthalpies for the reactions of cyclopentadiene with ethylene, acrylonitrile, fumaronitrile, maleonitrile, vinylidene cyanide, tricyanoethylene, and tetracyanoethylene have been computed with the Hartree-Fock quantum mechanical method and a variety of density functionals (B3LYP, BPW91, and MPW1K) and compared to classic experimental data obtained by Sauer, Wiest, and Mielert (Chem. Ber. 1964, 97, 3183). Some significant errors in B3LYP activation enthalpies involving cyano groups, especially 3 or 4 cyano groups, have been identified, whereas HF and MPW1K reproduce substituent ef

Fundamental symmetry aspects of chirality.

Physical systems which exhibit distinguishable enantiomers under space inversion are not necessarily chiral. A new definition of chirality is proposed that enables true and false chirality to be distinguished. Although spatial enantiomorphism is sufficient to guarantee chirality in a stationary object, enantiomorphous systems are not necessarily chiral when motion is involved. Only a truly chiral influence can induce absolute asymmetric synthesis in a reaction mixture at thermodynamic equilibrium, but false chirality might suffice if equilibrium is not attained. Parity violation lifts only the

Enhanced and Long-Lived Spin Squeezing in 2D Finite-Range Systems via Global Control Fields.

Spin squeezing is both a fundamental witness of quantum entanglement and a key resource for quantum-enhanced metrology. While all-to-all interactions provide a paradigmatic route to generate spin squeezing, many programmable quantum simulators naturally realize finite-range interactions that induce coupling between collective spin dynamics and finite-momentum spin-wave modes, thereby degrading the achievable squeezing. Here we develop an optimization-based global-control strategy for enhancing spin squeezing in a two-dimensional XX model with dipolar interactions. By combining rotor-spin-wave

Eigenstate thermalization hypothesis and random-matrix-theory universality in few-body systems.

In this paper, we use the Feingold-Peres model, a well-known paradigm of quantum chaos, as an example. Using semiclassical analysis and numerical simulations, we investigate the statistical properties of observables in few-body systems with chaotic classical limits and the emergence of random-matrix-theory universality. More specifically, we focus on (1) the applicability of the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis in few-body systems and the dependence of its form on the effective Planck constant and (2) the existence of a universal random-matrix-theory description of observables when truncat

Quantum-Driven High-Throughput Docking: Advances in Molecular Scoring and Drug Discovery.

Computational methods are consolidated tools in early drug lead discovery. Among them, high-throughput molecular docking (HTD) is widely used to identify bioactive compounds within large chemical libraries by assessing likely binding modes and assigning docking scores. These methods also inform how hits may be modified to improve protein-ligand interactions, thus guiding lead optimization while reducing time and cost compared with experimental screening. For more than a decade, advances in methodology and computing power have renewed interest in applying quantum mechanics (QM) to macromolecula

Quantum dot/plasmonic nanoparticle metachromophores with quantum yields that vary with excitation wavelength.

Coupled plasmonic/chromophore systems are of interest in applications ranging from fluorescent biosensors to solar photovoltaics and photoelectrochemical cells because near-field coupling to metal nanostructures can dramatically alter the optical performance of nearby materials. We show that CdSe quantum dots (QDs) near single silver nanoprisms can exhibit photoluminescence lifetimes and quantum yields that depend on the excitation wavelength, in apparent violation of the Kasha-Vavilov rule. We attribute the variation in QD lifetime with excitation wavelength to the wavelength-dependent coupli

Hydrothermal synthesis of high-quality type-II CdTe/CdSe quantum dots with near-infrared fluorescence.

A simple hydrothermal method is developed for the synthesis of high-quality, water-soluble, and near-infrared (NIR)-emitting type-II core/shell CdTe/CdSe quantum dots (QDs) by employing thiol-capped CdTe QDs as core templates and CdCl(2) and Na(2)SeO(3) as shell precursors. Compared with the original CdTe core QDs, the core/shell CdTe/CdSe QDs exhibit an obvious red-shifted emission, whose color can be tuned between visible and NIR regions (620-740 nm) by controlling the thickness of the CdSe shell. The photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of CdTe/CdSe QDs with an optimized thickness of the

Photo-induced phase transition (PIPT): How it is advancing through collaborations with materials and measurement sciences.

This study reviews developments in experimental studies of photo-induced cooperative phenomena (photo-induced phase transition, PIPT), which involve ultrafast dynamical changes in electronic, spin, and lattice structures. The growth in PIPT research has been driven by deep collaboration among quantum beam, materials, and theoretical sciences. In the early stages of PIPT research, it was thought that the dynamic PIPT process is dominated by energy relaxation from the photoexcited state, a process classified as classical and non-coherent. Using ultrashort-pulse quantum beam technologies, a new o

An innovative quantum-fuzzy paradigm for time- and context-sensitive membership: Quantive logic.

Uncertainty in real-world decision problems is rarely static or one-dimensional: the relevance of evidence changes over time, depends on context, and is shaped by interactions between multiple criteria. Classical fuzzy logic provides a flexible scalar notion of membership, but it typically treats each criterion in isolation and does not natively encode temporal or contextual dynamics. Quantum-inspired models, on the other hand, offer rich Hilbert-space representations but are often difficult to integrate with everyday decision-making tasks. This paper proposes Quantive Logic (QL), a quantum-in

Quantum Chemical Insights into Antibiotic Structure-Activity Relationships and Mechanisms of Action: A Review.

This review examines recent quantum chemical methodologies applied to investigating antibiotic structure and mechanisms of action. The discussion is organised into three sections: (1) enzymatic hydrolysis of the β-lactam ring, (2) interactions of antibiotics with ribosomal subunits and enzyme active sites, and (3) complex formation with metal ions. Each section evaluates how quantum chemical approaches, particularly density functional theory (DFT) and hybrid QM/MM techniques, model molecular processes relevant to antibiotic function, including transition states, electron density analyses, and

Refining Ligand Poses in RNA/Ligand Complexes of Pharmaceutical Relevance: A Perspective by QM/MM Simulations and NMR Measurements.

Predicting the binding poses of ligands targeting RNAs is challenging. Here, we propose that using first-principles quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) simulations, which incorporate automatically polarization effects, can help refine the structural determinants of ligand/RNA complexes in aqueous solution. In fact, recent advances in massively parallel computer architectures (such as exascale machines), combined with the power of machine learning, are greatly expanding the domain of applicability of these types of notoriously expensive simulations. We corroborate this proposal by car

The CuB site in particulate methane monooxygenase may be used to produce hydrogen peroxide.

Particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO) is the most efficient of the two groups of enzymes that can hydroxylate methane. The enzyme is membrane bound and therefore hard to study experimentally. For that reason, there is still no consensus regarding the location and nature of the active site. We have used combined quantum mechanical and molecular mechanical (QM/MM) methods to study the reactivity of the CuB site with a histidine brace and two additional histidine ligands. We compare it with the similar active site of lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases. We show that the CuB site can form a rea

Quantum Approaches for Dysphonia Assessment in Small Speech Datasets.

Dysphonia, a prevalent medical condition, leads to voice loss, hoarseness, or speech interruptions. To assess it, researchers have been investigating various machine learning techniques alongside traditional medical assessments. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) have gained popularity for their success in audio classification and speech recognition. However, the limited availability of speech data, poses a challenge for CNNs. This study compares the performance of CNNs with standard convolutional layers, CNNs with random nonlinear convolutional layers (RANDOM models), and a novel hybrid qua

Study of phenanthrenes from their unique mass spectrometric behavior through quantum chemical calculations to liquid chromatographic quantitation.

Phenanthrenes and their derivatives have biological relevance owing to their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and cytotoxic effects on cancer cells. They can be efficiently analyzed through ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/HRMS). Herein, we first studied the unique fragmentation behavior of phenanthrenes based on direct infusion MS/HRMS analysis. As a newly described phenomenon, "organ pipe distribution", we found a structural connection linking their unique fragmentation pattern to serial H radical losses. The bonds responsib
