Endodontic retreatment of dens invaginatus presenting with gutta-percha overfilling at the attached gingiva and chronic apical periodontitis: unusual clinical report.

AIM: This work describes the retreatment of an unusual case of dens invaginatus with gutta-percha overfilling at the gingival mucosa and chronic apical periodontitis in a 34-year-old woman. Initial periapical radiograph showed the presence of type II dens invaginatus with poor quality obturation, root perforation and chronic apical periodontitis of tooth 22. BACKGROUND: Dens invaginatus is a tooth malformation caused by infolding of the dental papilla during tooth development. This anomaly has been associated with increased prevalence of pulpal and periapical diseases. CASE DESCRIPTION: Conv

Differential diagnosis of apical periodontitis and nasopalatine duct cyst.

INTRODUCTION: An accurate differential diagnosis of apical periodontitis (AP) and nasopalatine duct cyst (NPDC) should be established to define the best treatment for endodontically treated maxillary anterior teeth with apical periodontitis. Three-dimensional cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images help to plan treatment and to define an initial diagnostic hypothesis. However, endodontic treatment or retreatment may be unnecessarily prescribed when radiographs show a superimposition of the incisor foramen over the apex of maxillary central incisors, mimicking AP. Diseases of nonendodontic

Eruption and function of maxillary third molars after extraction of second molars.

After extraction of maxillary second molars, will the third molars erupt into a functional position in a timely manner? To answer this question, 56 consecutively treated cases of maxillary second molar extraction were reviewed. The unerupted positions of the maxillary third molars were measured on cephalometric radiographs, ages of eruption were evaluated, positions of erupted third molars analyzed, and interproximal periodontal health of adjacent first molars compared. The results showed that, generally, the eruption of third molars was accelerated. Most of the third molars had acceptable int

Retrieval of extensive gutta-percha extruded into the maxillary sinus: use of 3-dimensional cone-beam computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Close proximity of the maxillary sinus to the roots of maxillary teeth can predispose to the inadvertent deposition of endodontic products into the maxillary sinus. One such material is thermoplasticized injectable gutta-percha, which has gained popularity of late. As a consequence of overfilling, some patients warrant surgical retrieval. METHODS: A case report of extreme overextension of gutta-percha within the maxillary sinus after endodontic retreatment on tooth #14 was provided. The distobuccal and palatal canals had been obturated with gutta-percha master cones and backfill

Microscope-aided endodontic treatment of maxillary first premolars with three roots: a case series.

Maxillary premolars have a highly variable root canal morphology. However, the presence of three roots is a rare occurrence. This clinical article describes the unusual anatomy detected in maxillary premolars during routine endodontic treatment using microscope. The diagnosis and clinical management of maxillary first premolars with three roots and canals using radiographic interpretation, access cavity modification and visual enhancement with operative microscopes is discussed in the article.

Comparison of manual and automated probing in an untreated periodontitis population.

Diagnosis of periodontal disease progression involves recording two probing attachment level measurements over an adequate time interval. A diagnostic instrument which exhibits less measurement variability allows for increased sensitivity and earlier disease detection. Traditionally, a manual probe with an occlusal stent of the cementoenamel junction (CEJ) as a reference landmark has been the method of choice. Automated probes that use an occlusal disk as the reference landmark have been developed as an alternative means of measure. The aim of this study was to compare the variability of these

Occurrence of cervical invasive root resorption in first and second molar teeth of orthodontic patients eight years after bracket removal.

INTRODUCTION: The occurrence and potential orthodontic causes of cervical invasive root resorption (CIRR) are unknown. We aimed to identify the occurrence of CIRR in molar teeth of orthodontic patients treated with fixed appliances. METHODS: All patients invited for final orthodontic recall between November 2009 and March 2011 were included. From 175 patients, 108 (46 men/62 women; mean age, 25 ± 5 years; mean time after bracket removal, 8 ± 2 years) were available. The first and second molar teeth (N = 858) of these patients were investigated for clinical and radiographic signs of CIRR. Pati

Acid formation in sucrose-exposed dental plaque in relation to caries incidence in schoolchildren.

The aim was to investigate the composition and concentration of organic acids produced by plaque bacteria in vivo and its possible relation to caries development in schoolchildren. Sucrose-exposed pooled plaque from 25 healthy teenagers was collected and the levels of Streptococcus mutans and lactobacilli were estimated. The acid anions were analysed with isotachophoresis. The prevalence and incidence of dental caries during a 2-year period was recorded. Depending on the amount of plaque collected, the subjects were divided into a low (n = 12) and a high (n = 13) plaque weight group. The domin
