Impairment of rapid repetitive finger movements and visual reaction time in patients with essential tremor.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The question whether patients with essential tremor (ET) have slowed movements as part of their clinical manifestations is still a matter of controversy. We analyzed basic motor function in patients with ET and in healthy matched controls. METHODS: We studied 61 patients with ET and 122 age- and sex-matched controls. Evaluation included four timed tests (pronation-supination, finger tapping and movement between two points, all with both hands, and walking test); and three tests performed on a personal computer (speed for pressing repetitively a key - frequency, visual

A reaction-time study of social, health, and personal attributions in relation to fluorosed teeth.

This reaction time study assessed the valence and strength of evaluations of people with differing levels of fluorosed teeth. Eighty participants rated photographs of smiling faces with four levels of digitally manipulated fluorosed teeth. Faces were presented on a computer screen for a period of 2000 ms followed by a single word descriptor. Participants quickly indicated whether the descriptor applied to the preceding face using a response key. Descriptors included health, aesthetic, and personal judgments. Logistic and linear regressions revealed that participants were significantly more lik

Chimeric faces, visual field bias, and reaction time bias: have we been missing a trick?

The chimeric faces test is a frequently used behavioural test of lateralisation for cognitive processing. Performance on this task is typically quantified in terms of bias towards selecting faces where positive facial emotion is expressed in the viewer's left visual field, indicating right hemisphere dominance for the task. This paper examines an alternative measure that may be extracted from responses to the chimeric faces test: reaction time bias. There was a strong positive correlation between the two asymmetry measures, which remained even after controlling for sex and handedness. The poss

Quantitative real-time polymerase chain-reaction assay allows characterization of pneumocystis infection in immunocompetent mice.

Pneumocystis causes pneumonia in immunodeficient hosts but also likely causes infection in healthy hosts. To characterize infection in healthy mice, we developed and validated a real-time polymerase chain reaction assay for quantitation of Pneumocystis carinii f. sp. muris. In healthy mice exposed to Pneumocystis-infected animals, organisms were first detected at 2-3 weeks, peaked at 5-6 weeks, and were cleared by 7-9 weeks. The peak organism load in healthy animals was 2-3 logs lower than that in immunodeficient animals. This approach should facilitate studies of anti-Pneumocystis immune mech

Rapid enumeration of Listeria monocytogenes in artificially contaminated cabbage using real-time polymerase chain reaction.

A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection method specific for Listeria monocytogenes was developed, and studies involving pure culture showed that the response of the assay was linear over 7 log10 (log) cycles. The method was then applied to the detection of L. monocytogenes artificially inoculated onto cabbage, a vegetable chosen because it is a major component of coleslaw, which has been associated with an outbreak of listeriosis. After being allowed to attach to the food, cells were washed from the cabbage leaf surface and recovered by centrifugation. The DNA was pu

Detection of different Ikaros isoforms in human leukaemias using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction.

The Ikaros gene is an essential regulator in development and haematopoiesis. Dysregulated Ikaros gene expression participates in leukaemic processes, as evidenced in animal models, and by analyses of blast-cell populations from leukaemic patients. We used real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to evaluate the relative abundance of several Ikaros transcript isoforms in a variety of leukaemic-cell samples. Total RNA was isolated from bone-marrow or blood-cell samples collected at diagnosis in children or adult patients, 18 of whom had acute myeloblastic leukaemia (AML), 61 of who

Differences in asymmetric perception of facial expression in free-vision chimeric stimuli and reaction time.

Two forms of a Chimeric Faces Free-Vision Task used to estimate cerebral asymmetry for perceiving facial expression were given to young male subjects, n = 60 in a first session and n = 40 in a retest session. Test-retest and split-half reliabilities were high. As expected from assumptions of right-hemisphere specialization for processing expression, faces with left-sided smiles were more frequently judged as looking happier than those with right-sided smiles in both forms. However, there were individual differences in direction and extent of bias, which were systematically related to reaction

Time-Resolved Multi-Omics Identify Biomarkers of Immediate Reactions to mRNA Vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Systemic allergic reactions (sARs) after vaccination are life-threatening and can erode vaccine confidence. Distinguishing sARs from immunization stress-related responses (ISRRs), which require different management, remains a clinical challenge. We sought to identify biomarkers distinguishing sARs from ISRRs, characterize their early immune and metabolic pathways, and determine whether immediate reactions alter subsequent vaccine-induced immunity. METHODS: We profiled samples from a double-blind, placebo-controlled BNT162b2 re-vaccination trial (NCT04977479) in individuals with al

Development and validation of a real-time polymerase chain reaction for the detection of Haycocknema perplexum.

Haycocknema perplexum is a rare and emerging cause of parasitic myositis. Detection and surveillance are of growing importance given the increasing degree of climate conditions conducive to transmission. In this study, we developed a real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method for direct detection of two genomic regions of H. perplexum. The real-time PCR assays, SSU-PCR and COX-1-PCR, targeted the small subunit of nuclear ribosomal RNA and cytochrome oxidase-1 genomic regions, respectively. The performance of the assays was assessed using a panel of H. perplexum samples, both fresh frozen

Impact of Dysphonic Schoolteachers' Voices on Children's Reaction Times according to Phonemic Contrasts.

INTRODUCTION: This paper aimed at observing the impact of dysphonic voice on children's reception of a linguistic message by evaluating their reaction times (RTs) to instructions given by functional dysphonic and control female schoolteachers (STs). METHODS: French minimal pairs such as /muʃ/ ("mouche" fly) versus /buʃ/ ("bouche" mouth) embedded in a carrier sentence "click on the drawing of…" were produced by two groups of 10 dysphonic and control female ST, matched in age and year of experience. The phonemical contrasts observed are voicing, nasality, consonantal place of articulation, vowe

Functional Reaction Times of a Simulated Blocking Test among Para Taekwondo Athletes.

Para taekwondo is a combat sport martial art that requires fast reaction times for successful defense during fighting. The current classification system is based on the function and the effective length of the upper limbs, which affects the athlete's ability to block. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the differences between the different classes in the athlete's ability to block and move around the ring. A total of 87 Para taekwondo (K42, K43, and K44) athletes' data were analyzed. Each participant engaged in the blocking reaction time test in a fighting stance with the left leg in f

An evaluation of bicycle-specific agility and reaction times in mountain bikers and road cyclists.

BACKGROUND: Cycling is a popular recreational and competitive sport with many health benefits but also significant risks, with 85% of recreational cyclists reporting an injury each season. The most common mechanism of injury is through a loss of control of the bicycle, and collisions with other objects. Reaction time and agility in cyclists may contribute to the ability to control a bicycle. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate bicycle-specific agility and reaction time in cyclists. METHODS: The study was a cross-sectional observational study. Thirty-five cyclists (27 males, eight females) participated i

Slowed Luminance Reaction Times in Cervical Dystonia: Disordered Superior Colliculus Processing.

BACKGROUND: Abnormal temporal discrimination in cervical dystonia is hypothesized to be attributable to disrupted processing in the superior colliculus. The fast, luminance-based, retinotectal pathway, projects to the superior colliculus; chromatic stimuli responses, by the retino-geniculo-calcarine pathway, are up to 30 ms longer. OBJECTIVES: We sought to interrogate visual processing and reaction times in patients with cervical dystonia compared with healthy controls. We hypothesized that cervical dystonia patients would have impaired reaction times to luminance based stimuli accessing the

Unstable Binocular Fixation Affects Reaction Times But Not Implicit Motor Learning in Dyslexia.

PURPOSE: Individuals with developmental dyslexia suffer not only from reading problems as more general motor deficits can also be observed in this patient group. Both psychometric clinical tests and objective eyetracking methods suggest that unstable binocular fixation may contribute to reading problems. Because binocular instability may cause poor eye-hand coordination and impair motor control, the primary aim of this study was to explore in dyslexic subjects the influence of unstable binocular fixation on reaction times (RTs) and implicit motor learning (IML), which is one of the fundamental

Time of Onset and Predictors of Biphasic Anaphylactic Reactions: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A biphasic reaction is a potentially life-threatening recurrence of symptoms after initial resolution of anaphylaxis without re-exposure to the trigger. The infrequent nature of these reactions has made them difficult to study and predict. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate the time of onset and predictors of biphasic anaphylactic reactions. METHOD: Original research studies that described biphasic reactions in case series or cohort studies were included. Studies that did not describe biphasic reactions and case series with less than 2 biphasic reactions were exclud
