Professionalising release management for mentally disordered perpetrators: Benefits in terms of recidivism rates-Results from a study within the Austrian prison system.

BACKGROUND: In Austria, mentally ill perpetrators not guilty for reasons of insanity are committed into a custodial measure to receive treatment. The rate of these detainees returning after their conditional release because of reoffending or revocation decreased significantly over a period of 15 years. AIMS: This study aims at examining this system and the adjustments made over a period of 10 years, in order to identify changes responsible for the observable decline of the recidivism rate. METHOD: Therefore, a quantitative study of 807 prison and court files was conducted, extracting informa

Platelet monoamine oxidase B activity did not predict destructive personality traits or violent recidivism: a prospective study in male forensic psychiatric examinees.

AIMS: This prospective study was designed to replicate previous findings of an association between the platelet monoamine oxidase B (MAO-B) activity and factors of relevance for criminal behaviour in a well-documented clinical study population. METHODS: Subjects (n = 77, aged 17-76 years, median 30 years) were recruited among consecutive perpetrators of severe interpersonal violent and/or sexual crimes referred to forensic psychiatric investigation. Participants were extensively investigated by structured psychiatric, psychological and social workups, including state-of-the-art rating instrum

Examining Benchmarks of Sexual Recidivism Rates for Short, Moderate, and Long-Term Follow-Up Periods: A Meta-Analysis of Canadian and American Studies.

Measuring sexual recidivism involves both a behavioral and a temporal component. The behavioral component is sexually reoffending, generally measured using official sources. The temporal component is the follow-up period during which sexual recidivism is examined. Research has shown that if the length of the follow-up period is extended, rates of sexual recidivism increase. What is less clear is the functional form of this relationship. The present study examines this relationship through a meta-analysis of 468 sexual recidivism studies conducted in Canada and the United States and published s

Balancing Political and Criminogenic Needs: Evaluating the New Zealand Department of Corrections' Response to Men Assessed With a Below Average Risk for Sexual Recidivism.

Current research provides little evidence for the effectiveness of treatment in reducing sexual offence recidivism amongst low-risk populations. However, in real-world correctional settings, program delivery rarely occurs in a vacuum, treatment may be politically mandated and unidimensional measures of program success may preclude recognition of broader benefits. The current study investigated the effectiveness of a low-intensity treatment program, both in terms of participants' recidivism outcomes and in terms of broader organizational/systems impacts. The results demonstrated low base rate r

Association between the detection of alcohol, illicit drugs and/or psychotropic medications/opioids in patients admitted due to trauma and trauma recidivism: A cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the association between the presence and type of drug detected and trauma recidivism in a cohort of patients admitted due to trauma. METHOD: A cohort study was conducted based on data from a project where the presence of alcohol and other drugs (cannabis, cocaine, amphetamines, methamphetamines, tricyclic antidepressants, barbiturates, opiates and benzodiazepines) was analysed in 1,187 patients aged 16 to 70 years admitted due to trauma. The patients were followed for a period of between 10 to 52 months until June 2016. For this study, the recurrence of injuries from a

The Effects of Prison Visits From Family Members on Prisoners' Well-Being, Prison Rule Breaking, and Recidivism: A Review of Research Since 1991.

The effect of family visits on prisoner well-being and future behavior is an important consideration in the development of prison policy. This review systematically examines current research findings that explore the impact of prison visits from family members on three specific offender outcomes: prisoners' well-being, rule breaking within the prison, and recidivism. The review focuses on visits by family and does not duplicate earlier reviews but rather extends them into current literature, through identification of empirical studies conducted post 1989, published since 1991. Ten studies met

Personality Assessment Inventory-derived estimates of section III antisocial personality disorder and recidivism in a sample of men evaluated for sexually violent predator status.

The Personality Assessment Inventory is a broadband self-report instrument of personality, psychopathology, and response style that is commonly used in Sexually Violent Predator evaluations. These evaluations typically involve assessment of personality pathology that is empirically associated with recidivism, such as psychopathic personality disorder. Over the past several years, researchers have developed rescoring procedures for the Personality Assessment Inventory that compute information on the Alternative Model for Personality Disorders-a hybrid dimensional-categorical model of personalit

Does Being Over 60 Years Old at Index Offense Impact Sexual Recidivism Risk? A Large-Scale Comparison of Men Released Over the Age of 60.

Research has consistently found risk for sexual recidivism drops as men convicted of a sexual offense age. One question that remains, however, is whether this age-related reduction in risk applies to men who commit their sexual offenses at an older age. The current study examined this question in a sample of 939 men who were screened for civil management and released to the community (mean follow-up = 6.33 years, SD = 3.98 years), by comparing the sexual recidivism rates of (a) 238 men convicted of sexual offenses committed over the age of 60 (Over-60 Index group), and (b) 701 men who committe

Anesthetic management for right upper extremity amputation due to recidivous cutaneous carcinoma and acute postoperative pain control in patients affected by epidermolysis bullosa.

A 22-year-old male who was affected by epidermolysis bullosa (EB) and xeroderma pigmentosa (with structural and pathological changes that preclude orotracheal intubation) underwent right upper extremity amputation and ipsilateral axillary lymphadenectomy. The patient was operated without intubation, thereby assuring an optimal state of acute postoperative pain control by regional anesthesia. Intravenous administration of ketamine and remifentanil plus low-dose sevoflurane resulted in anesthesia with spontaneous breathing by the patient. Moreover, the intraoperative brachial plexus nerve block

A randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of Parenting-STAIR in treating maternal PTSD to reduce maltreatment recidivism: protocol for the Safe Mothers, Safe Children study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment recidivism substantially increases the likelihood of adverse life outcomes, but there is little evidence that family preservation services are effective at reducing recidivism. Mothers in child welfare have very high rates of trauma exposure; maternal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an intervention target that has the potential to reduce abuse and neglect. The Safe Mothers, Safe Children (SMSC) intervention program involves the delivery of an innovative combination of interventions, including Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STA

Duodeno-ileal diversion with self-forming magnets in a sutureless neodymium anastomosis procedure (SNAP) for weight recidivism after sleeve gastrectomy: feasibility and 9-month results.

BACKGROUND: The sleeve gastrectomy (SG) has become the most common bariatric procedure worldwide. However, insufficient weight loss or weight recidivism is frequent, which may require effective and safe revisional procedures. OBJECTIVE: To determine the technical feasibility and safety of a minimally invasive, duodeno-ileal side-to-side anastomosis using a Sutureless Neodymium Anastomosis Procedure (SNAP) for patients with weight recidivism or inadequate weight loss following SG. The curse of experiencing and committing violence as a criminal recidivism predictor: A comparison between female forensic psychiatric patients with severe mental disorders and substance use disorder.

BACKGROUND: Violence occurs frequently in the life of forensic psychiatric patients, both as active aggression and in the form of victimization. Undoubtedly, these incidents shape personality, behavior, and affect the ability to interact adequately socially. Thus, such experiences may influence criminal recidivism and serve as forensic psychiatric/psychological predictors upon hospital discharge. METHODS: Hence, this study aimed at characterizing two distinct female forensic psychiatric patient populations (nonsubstance use mental disorders [n = 110] versus substance use disorder [n = 415]) r

A Preliminary Analysis of Sexual Recidivism and Predictive Validity of the Static-99R in Men Discharged From State Hospitals Pursuant to California's Sexually Violent Predator Act.

We examined the recidivism rates and the predictive validity of the Static-99R in 335 men who were detained or civilly committed and released from California State Hospitals pursuant to the Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) Act, and followed up for approximately 21 years from date of hospital admission. In all, 8.7% were arrested or convicted for a new sexual offense during the total follow-up (N = 335) and 7.8% over a fixed 5-year follow-up (n = 205). The Static-99R demonstrated small in magnitude discrimination for sexual, violent, and general recidivism (area under the curve [AUC]/C = .56 to

Health, Social and Recidivism Outcomes Among People Who Have Been Incarcerated in New South Wales, Australia: Study Protocol and Cohort Profile for the Prison Outcomes STudy (POST).

INTRODUCTION: We have been funded to examine post-incarceration health and social outcomes for all people incarcerated in New South Wales, Australia, 2000-2022; assess treatment and services for drug dependence and serious mental illness; and project the impact of expanding intervention coverage. We will use a linked cohort, the Prison Outcomes STudy (POST), which we also describe. METHODS: The POST cohort was established using linked administrative data for all adults (≥ 18 years) admitted to full-time custody in New South Wales, 2000-2022. Custody records were probabilistically linked to 18

The role of co-occurring disorders in criminal recidivism and psychiatric recovery among adults with opioid use disorder and criminal-legal involvement: A statewide retrospective cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: Individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) in the criminal-legal system commonly present co-occurring mental health disorders. However, evidence-based treatment for high-risk populations such as those with co-occurring disorders is often unavailable within jails and prisons. Coordination of timely and affordable access to behavioral health treatment following incarceration is critical to address the multidimensional needs of people with co-occurring needs. However, the role of co-occurring disorders among adults with OUD and criminal-legal involvement who are accessing community-

Gastric Bipartition with Functional Duodenum Exclusion (GBp-FDE) as a Possible Surgical Conversion of Sleeve Gastrectomy in Patients with De Novo GERD and Obesity Recidivism: Preliminary Results of a Case Series.

BACKGROUND Sleeve gastrectomy (SG) is widely used in obesity treatment, although it is associated with new onset of gastroesophageal reflux disease (de novo GERD) and weight regain. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is the standard revisional procedure for GERD, though it offers limited additional weight loss. Ileal-based procedures have demonstrated superior outcomes regarding weight loss but have uncertain results in GERD. This study presents preliminary findings on gastric bipartition with functional duodenal exclusion (GBp-FDE) as a revisional approach following SG in this scenario. CASE REP

Recidivism, health and social functioning following release to the community of NSW prisoners with problematic drug use: study protocol of the population-based retrospective cohort study on the evaluation of the Connections Program.

INTRODUCTION: The rising rate of incarceration in Australia, driven by high reoffending, is a major public health problem. Problematic drug use is associated with increasing rates of reoffending and return to custody of individuals. Throughcare provides support to individuals during imprisonment through to post-release, improving both the transition to community and health outcomes post-incarceration. The aim of this study is to evaluate the Connections Programme (CP) that utilises a throughcare approach for release planning of people in prison with a history of problematic drug use. The study

Investigating racial disparities in violence risk assessment using the Spousal Assault Risk Assessment Guide-Version 3 (SARA-V3): Structured professional judgment ratings and recidivism among Indigenous and non-Indigenous individuals.

Racial disparities in criminal justice outcomes are widely observed. In Canada, such disparities are particularly evident between Indigenous and non-Indigenous persons. The role of formal risk assessment in contributing to such disparities remains a topic of interest to many, but critical analysis has almost exclusively focused on actuarial or statistical risk measures. Recent research suggests that ratings from other common tools, based on the structured professional judgment model, can also demonstrate racial disparities. This study examined risk assessments produced using a widely used stru
