Tuberculosis screening during the 2015 European refugee crisis.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of our study was to describe and evaluate management, performance and results of Tuberculosis (TB)-screening among refugees and asylum seekers in a rural area in Germany in 2015. METHODS: Refugees or asylum seekers, staying in shared-accommodation are obligated to participate on screening chest X-ray (CXR) in order to screen for signs of potentially infectious pulmonary TB (German Protection against Infection Act and German Asylum Procedure Act). n = 705 individuals underwent screening chest X-ray (CXR) to detect pulmonary TB in September and October 2015 on site. [Disseminated osteolytic lesions in a 28-year-old refugee].

A 28-year-old Syrian refugee presented with right-sided knee pain and progressive deterioration of the general condition over the past months. Laboratory diagnostics revealed severe hypercalcemia due to primary hyperparathyroidism, and computed tomography (CT) scanning demonstrated disseminated osteolytic lesions throughout the skeleton. Histologically, these lesions were characterized by multinuclear giant cells (defining these lesions as so-called brown tumors). Finally, surgical removal of a jugular mass allowed the histopathologic diagnosis of a sporadic parathyroid carcinoma. In the patie

Refugee children's sandplay narratives in immigration detention in Canada.

Asylum seeking children arriving in Canada regularly face incarceration in medium-security-style immigration detention centres. Research demonstrates the human cost of detaining migrant children and families and the psychiatric burden linked with such imprisonment. This study aims to understand the lived experiences of children aged 3-13 held in detention. Informed by a qualitative methodology of narrative inquiry, child participants created worlds in the sand and generated stories to express their subjective experience. Results suggest that children's sandplay confirms the traumatic nature of

Unrecognised diaphragmatic hernia in a refugee child: an incidental diagnosis.

A 4-year-old boy from Syria was evaluated at the emergency department because of an upper airway viral illness. His physical examination showed a significant intensity reduction of all heart sounds in the absence of any other pathological signs. As the child was affected with Down's syndrome and had suffered thoracic and abdominal trauma because of bombardments, a diaphragmatic hernia was immediately suspected and was confirmed through a simple chest X-ray. A careful clinical examination is crucial in refugee children and adolescents, as several medical and surgical disorders could have escape

A report of sexual abuse in an Afghan refugee boy in Iran.

All children have the right to complete and integrated physical and psychological protection against abuse. The most important reason and risk factors for child abuse are social causes including poor familial support, poverty, mood disorders in the family, and addiction. Here, we report a case of child abuse of an Afghan child in Iran with a background of mood disturbances who presented with multiple trauma and injury. A nine-year-old Afghan boy was described with multiple injuries on neck, upper and lower extremities, and trunk. On anal examination in knee chest position, a suspected mucosal

Learning Problems in Children of Refugee Background: A Systematic Review.

CONTEXT: Learning problems are common, affecting up to 1 in 10 children. Refugee children may have cumulative risk for educational disadvantage, but there is limited information on learning in this population. OBJECTIVE: To review the evidence on educational outcomes and learning problems in refugee children and to describe their major risk and resource factors. DATA SOURCES: Medline, Embase, PubMed, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, PsycINFO, and Education Resources Information Center. Vision Impairment and Ocular Morbidity in a Refugee Population in Malawi.

PURPOSE: To provide screening services and obtain information on the eye health status and distribution of visual impairments in a refugee population of the sole refugee camp in Malawi. METHODS: A general eye screening at Dzaleka refugee settlement camp was organized in November 2012. Final-year optometry students conducted detailed optometry examinations, including visual acuity (VA) assessment for near and distance, retinoscopy, and subjective refraction in cases with distance VA less than 6/12 or near VA less than N8, anterior and posterior segment evaluation. Their findings were then veri

Psychopharmacologic treatment of dissociative fugue and PTSD in an Ethiopian refugee.

Despite widespread awareness of their frequent co-occurrence, little is known about treatment of individuals with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and dissociative disorders. Patients with dissociative disorders do not respond well to standard exposure therapy, and few psychopharmacologic trials exist. Fluoxetine proved ineffective for depersonalization disorder, but paroxetine showed efficacy in decreasing dissociative symptoms in PTSD patients.

Reportable neurologic diseases in refugee camps in 19 countries.

BACKGROUND: Approximately one-third of refugees worldwide live in refugee camps. Selected neurologic diseases are actively reported in some refugee camps. METHODS: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees monitors health visits in refugee camps with the assistance of more than 25 partner organizations using standardized case definitions. Neurologic diseases were selected and searched for the years 2008 to 2011. The number of health care visits for a neurologic disease was calculated and divided by the aggregated number of reporting months available for each refugee camp ("visits per

Developing a best practice model of refugee maternity care.

BACKGROUND: About one third of refugee and humanitarian entrants to Australia are women age 12-44 years. Pregnant women from refugee backgrounds may have been exposed to a range of medical and psychosocial issues that can impact maternal, fetal and neonatal health. RESEARCH QUESTION: What are the key elements that characterise a best practice model of maternity care for women from refugee backgrounds? This paper outlines the findings of a project which aimed at developing such a model at a major maternity hospital in Brisbane, Australia. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS: This multifaceted project in

Management of old world cutaneous leishmaniasis in refugee children.

The optimal treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis is controversial. We report our experience managing Old World cutaneous leishmaniasis in a pediatric refugee clinic. Conventional amphotericin B therapy caused reversible renal failure in 2 of 3 children treated. The choice of treatment for cutaneous leishmaniasis needs to balance the risks of treatment against the likely cosmetic benefits of therapy.

Late-stage human African trypanosomiasis in a Sudanese refugee.

A 19-year-old Sudanese woman, who had lived for about a decade in Ugandan refugee camps, was referred for investigation of a 12-month history of a generalised rash. Two months later, her condition had deteriorated to include cachexia and drowsiness. Despite initial negative findings on investigation, human African trypanosomiasis (HAT) was suspected, and parasites were found in a double-centrifuged sample of cerebrospinal fluid. Eflornithine, the appropriate drug for treatment of late-stage disease, was obtained through the World Health Organization. This case highlights the diagnostic and the

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis with remission in a Bosnian refugee child.

Subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE) virtually disappeared from the US after mass measles immunization programs dating from the 1960s. However, SSPE has reappeared in internationally adopted children and in refugee children emigrating from developing or war torn countries lacking effective measles immunization programs. SSPE usually occurs 6 to 8 years after a bout of measles in early childhood; death typically follows within 1 to 3 years. What is often not reported in textbooks is that spontaneous remission occurs in a small subset of children with documented SSPE.

Posttraumatic stress among refugees: The moderating effect of perceived social support.

OBJECTIVE: Social support has been associated with the mental health of refugees. However, little is known about the characteristics and effects of social support in this group. The aim of this study was to investigate the protective role of social support, specifically through the perceived opportunity to confide in someone. We hypothesized that the opportunity to confide would have a moderating influence on the dose-effect relationship between trauma exposure and PTSD symptoms. METHODS: Clinical face-to-face interviews were conducted with 65 adult refugees who were living in the north-east
