A small temperature rise may contribute towards the apparent induction by microwaves of heat-shock gene expression in the nematode Caenorhabditis Elegans.

We have previously reported that low intensity microwave exposure (0.75-1.0 GHz CW at 0.5 W; SAR 4-40 mW/kg) can induce an apparently non-thermal heat-shock response in Caenorhabditis elegans worms carrying hsp16-1::reporter genes. Using matched copper TEM cells for both sham and exposed groups, we can detect only modest reporter induction in the latter exposed group (15-20% after 2.5 h at 26 degrees C, rising to approximately 50% after 20 h). Traceable calibration of our copper TEM cell by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) reveals significant power loss within the cell (8.5% at 1.0 GHz),

A model-based method for the prediction of whole-body absorbed dose and bone marrow toxicity for 186Re-HEDP treatment of skeletal metastases from prostate cancer.

In high-activity rhenium-186 hydroxyethylidene diphosphonate ((186)Re-HEDP) treatment of bone metastatic disease from prostate cancer the dose-limiting factor is haematological toxicity. In this study, we examined the correlation of the injected activity and the whole-body absorbed dose with treatment toxicity and response. Since the best response is likely to be related to the maximum possible injected activity limited by the whole-body absorbed dose, the relationship between pre-therapy biochemical and physiological parameters and the whole-body absorbed dose was studied to derive an algorit

Treatment strategy in stereotactic radiosurgery for trigeminal neuralgia, essential tremor, and coexisting intracranial tumors: The impact of biologically effective dose on clinical outcome.

BACKGROUND: Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) is a well-established treatment for trigeminal neuralgia (TN) and essential tremor (ET). In patients with coexisting intracranial tumors, radiosurgery can potentially address functional and oncologic targets in a single or staged session. However, data on integrating these treatments and the predictive role of the biologically effective dose (BED), remain limited. This study aims to evaluate clinical outcomes and identify the influence of dosimetric predictors, including BED, in patients undergoing GKRS for TN and/or ET in the context of coexisting i

Impact of dose and dose-averaged linear energy transfer on oro-pharyngeal-mucosal toxicity in patients with non-squamous head and neck cancers treated with carbon-ion radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: In head and neck carbon-ion radiotherapy (CIRT), high dose-averaged LET (LETd) and relative biological effectiveness weighted dose (DRBE) often overlap the oro-pharyngeal-mucosa (mucosa of oral cavity, oro-pharynx, nasopharynx, pharynx) beyond the target, resulting in serious complications. We investigated clinical and dosimetric predictors for late severe mucosal-toxicity/ oro-antral fistula (OAF) post-CIRT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: CIRT plans for 51 patients with non-squamous head and neck cancers (NSHNCs) were evaluated and correlated with clinical outcome. Prescription was DRBE

Effects of exposure to different types of radiation on behaviors mediated by peripheral or central systems.

The effects of exposure to ionizing radiation on behavior may result from effects on peripheral or on central systems. For behavioral endpoints that are mediated by peripheral systems (e.g., radiation-induced conditioned taste aversion or vomiting), the behavioral effects of exposure to heavy particles (56Fe, 600 MeV/n) are qualitatively similar to the effects of exposure to gamma radiation (60Co) and to fission spectrum neutrons. For these endpoints, the only differences between the different types of radiation are in terms of relative behavioral effectiveness. For behavioral endpoints that a

In Silico Interim Adaptation of Proton Therapy in Head and Neck Cancer by Simultaneous Dose and Linear Energy Transfer Escalation.

PURPOSE: The outcome of proton therapy for head and neck cancer (HNC) varies considerably. We investigated the feasibility of adapting proton therapy plans based on 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose-positron emission tomography-defined biologic tumor volumes (BTVs) reflecting remaining aggressive tumor subvolumes 2 weeks into treatment (interim). Recognizing the potential to improve proton therapy response with increasing linear energy transfer (LET), we simulated a combined dose-LET escalation to the BTVs and compared it to pure dose escalation. In addition, the impact of relative biological effectivene

Volume and heterogeneity dependence of the dose-response relationship for head and neck tumours.

Based on the Poisson statistics of cell kill a model for the response of heterogeneous tumours to non-uniform dose delivery have been developed. The five parameters required to characterize the response are the 50% response dose, D50, the normalized dose-response gradient, gamma, the tumour heterogeneity factor, h, the relative volume, v and the extra daily dose required to counteract the tumour cell proliferation, delta. The model has been fitted to data from a number of clinical investigations to allow the derivation of clinically relevant radiation response parameters for head and neck tumo

Interventions to reduce the stigma of eating disorders: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Stigma is a problem for individuals with eating disorders (EDs), forming a barrier to disclosure and help-seeking. Interventions to reduce ED stigma may help remove these barriers; however, it is not known which strategies (e.g., explaining etiology to reduce blame, contact with a person with an ED, or educating about ED) are effective in reducing stigma and related outcomes. This review described effectiveness of intervention strategies, and identified gaps in the literature. A search of four databases was performed using the terms (eating disorder* OR bulimi* OR anorexi* OR binge-eating diso

Alpha particle induced DNA damage and repair in normal cultured thyrocytes of different proliferation status.

Childhood exposure to ionizing radiation increases the risk of developing thyroid cancer later in life and this is suggested to be due to higher proliferation of the young thyroid. The interest of using high-LET alpha particles from Astatine-211 ((211)At), concentrated in the thyroid by the same mechanism as (131)I [1], in cancer treatment has increased during recent years because of its high efficiency in inducing biological damage and beneficial dose distribution when compared to low-LET radiation. Most knowledge of the DNA damage response in thyroid is from studies using low-LET irradiation

Comparison of gamma- and UV-light-induced EPR spectra of enamel from deciduous molar teeth.

From previous work, it is known that CO2- radicals in tooth enamel are induced by gamma as well as by UV-light exposure. The parameters of the EPR signal of the CO2- radical were found to be independent of the source of exposure. However, it would be desirable for retrospective dosimetry to identify other characteristic features of the EPR spectrum of tooth enamel, which would allow differentiation between the two sources of exposure. In the present work, enamel of deciduous molars was exposed to gamma-radiation from a 60Co-source and 254 nm UV-light from a low-pressure mercury lamp. The resul

Pathogen variation and urea influence selection and success of Streptomyces mixtures in biological control.

Success in biological control of plant diseases remains inconsistent in the field. A collection of well-characterized Streptomyces antagonists (n = 19 isolates) was tested for their capacities to inhibit pathogenic Streptomyces scabies (n = 15 isolates). There was significant variation among antagonists in ability to inhibit pathogen isolates and among pathogens in their susceptibility to inhibition. Only one antagonist could inhibit all pathogens, and antagonist-pathogen interactions were highly specific, highlighting the limitations of single-strain inoculum in biological control. However, t

Association between several immune response-related genes and the effectiveness of biological treatments in patients with moderate-to-severe psoriasis.

Biological therapies are safer and more effective against psoriasis than conventional treatments. Even so, 30-50% of psoriatic patients show an inadequate response, which is associated with individual genetic heterogeneity. Pharmacogenetic studies have identified several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) as possible predictive and prognostic biomarkers for psoriasis treatment response. The objective of this study was to determine the link between several SNPs and the clinical response to biological therapies in patients with moderate-severe psoriasis. A set of 21 SNPs related to psoriasis

Cone beam computed tomography for imaging orbital trauma--image quality and radiation dose compared with conventional multislice computed tomography.

We compared the image quality and radiation dose to the lens of the eye in patients with suspected orbital fractures who were imaged using cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) or conventional multislice computed tomography (CT). Although CBCT has a lower radiation dose than conventional CT, it is not known whether the image quality is comparable for diagnostic purposes. We identified fractures of the orbit (floor or roof, or both) in 6/10 patients who were scanned using CBCT and in 5/10 patients who were scanned using multislice CT (orbital floor and medial wall). Microdosimetric and Biological Effects of Photon Irradiation at Different Energies in Bone Marrow.

To ensure reliability and reproducibility of radiobiological data, it is necessary to standardize dosimetry practices across all research institutions. The photoelectric effect predominates over other interactions at low energy and in high atomic number materials such as bone, which can lead to increased dose deposition in soft tissue adjacent to mineral bone due to secondary radiation particles. This may produce radiation effects that deviate from higher energy photon irradiation that best model exposure from clinical radiotherapy or nuclear incidences. Past theoretical considerations have in
