Anatomically-Specific, 3D-Printed Cradles Enable In Vivo Mapping of the Bioelectrical Activation across the Gastroduodenal Junction.

Rhythmic bioelectrical 'slow waves' are a key regulatory mechanism underpinning digestion. The pyloric sphincter separates the independent slow wave and contractile behavior of the stomach and small intestine, while also regulating gastric emptying. In this study, we develop and validate anatomically-specific electrode cradles and analysis techniques in pigs, to map in vivo slow wave activation across this critical pylorus region for the first time. 3D printed electrode cradles were developed from reconstructions of magnetic resonance images, to accurately capture anatomical geometry. A low-pa

Vocal Tract Morphology in Inhaling Singing: Characteristics During Vowel Production-A Case Study in a Professional Singer.

BACKGROUND: A professional singer produced various vowels on a comfortable loudness and pitch in an inspiratory and expiratory phonation manner. The present study investigates the morphological differences and tries to find a link with the acoustical characteristics. OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that features, constantly present over all vowels, characterize inhaling phonation and that the formant frequencies reflect the morphological findings. STUDY DESIGN: A prospective case study was carried out. METHODS: A female singer uttered the vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, and /u/ in a supine

Association Between the Onset Pattern of Adult Moyamoya Disease and Risk Factors for Stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Few previous studies have comprehensively explored the relationship between the onset pattern of adult moyamoya disease and risk factors for stroke. We performed a retrospective analysis focusing on risk factors for stroke and related findings on magnetic resonance imaging/angiography with respect to the pattern of disease onset. We also examined whether risk factors for stroke were associated with an increased risk for symptomization in asymptomatic patients. METHODS: A total of 178 adult patients with moyamoya disease (asymptomatic, n=84; ischemic, n=71; hemorrhagic,

Is phase locking crucial to improve hearing thresholds in tinnitus patients?

Temporal processing of auditory data plays a crucial role in our proposed model of tinnitus development through stochastic resonance (SR). The model assumes a physiological mechanism optimizing auditory information transmission (as quantified by autocorrelation [AC] analysis) into the brain by adding the optimal amount of neuronal noise to otherwise subthreshold signals. We hypothesize that this takes place at the second synapse of the auditory pathway in the dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN). We propose that after hearing loss, this neuronal noise is increased in the affected frequency band to im

Finite volume analysis of temperature effects induced by active MRI implants: 2. Defects on active MRI implants causing hot spots.

BACKGROUND: Active magnetic resonance imaging implants, for example stents, stent grafts or vena cava filters, are constructed as wireless inductively coupled transmit and receive coils. They are built as a resonator tuned to the Larmor frequency of a magnetic resonance system. The resonator can be added to or incorporated within the implant. This technology can counteract the shielding caused by eddy currents inside the metallic implant structure. This may allow getting diagnostic information of the implant lumen (in stent stenosis or thrombosis for example). The electro magnetic rf-pulses du

Words in Context: The Effects of Length, Frequency, and Predictability on Brain Responses During Natural Reading.

Word length, frequency, and predictability count among the most influential variables during reading. Their effects are well-documented in eye movement studies, but pertinent evidence from neuroimaging primarily stem from single-word presentations. We investigated the effects of these variables during reading of whole sentences with simultaneous eye-tracking and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fixation-related fMRI). Increasing word length was associated with increasing activation in occipital areas linked to visual analysis. Additionally, length elicited a U-shaped modulation (i.e., le

Frequency-specific alterations of spontaneous brain activity in stroke patients with upper limb motor dysfunction: A multi-metric rs-fMRI and machine learning study.

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke upper limb motor dysfunction is associated with complex alterations in brain function, but the frequency-specific characteristics of spontaneous local neural activity remain incompletely understood. This study investigated multi-metric resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) alterations in stroke patients with upper limb motor dysfunction and explored their discriminative value using machine-learning classifiers. METHODS: A total of 70 stroke patients and 45 healthy controls (HCs) underwent rs-fMRI. Fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuatio

Structural changes upon photoexcitation into the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer state of [Cu(pqx)(PPh3)2]+ probed by resonance Raman spectroscopy and density functional theory.

The structural changes that occur when [Cu(pqx)(PPh(3))(2)](+) (pqx is 2-(2'-pyridyl)quinoxaline) undergoes excitation through a metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transition are investigated using resonance Raman excitation profiles coupled with density functional theory (DFT). The DFT calculations predict bond lengths to within 3 pm and absolute deviations of 7 cm(-1) for the vibrational frequencies of [Cu(pqx)(PPh(3))(2)](+). TD-DFT calculations of oscillator strengths (f = 0.089) and band positions (419 nm) showed close agreement with experiment (f = 0.07, 431 nm). Resonance Raman spec

Effects of adenotonsillectomy on speech spectrum in children.

OBJECTIVE: The vocal tract, which starts from the glottis and extends to the lips is considered to be a resonator for speech production. Enlarged palatine tonsils may cause hypernasal speech, oral breathing or muffled voice. Changes in the structure of this resonator are assumed to modify the speech characteristics. The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in acoustic feature of speech after adenotonsillectomy in children and to establish concepts of management and rational therapeutic approach. METHODS: Before and after surgery, an acoustic analysis was made to 40 children, aged between

High-resolution diffusion-weighted imaging identifies ischemic lesions in a majority of transient ischemic attack patients.

Transient ischemic attack (TIA) is defined as focal neurological deficit caused by ischemia resolving within 24 hours. In a secondary analysis of a large monocentric cohort of 446 TIA patients, we explored the frequency and determinants of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) lesions on high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging. Overall, 240 (54%) of all TIA patients presented with DWI lesions. These patients had higher National Institute of Health Stroke Scale and ABCD2 scores and presented more frequently with vessel occlusion and perfusion deficits, but had similar functional outcome at 3 mont

Association between integrated backscatter and arrhythmia in patients with ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy.

BACKGROUND: Ventricular scars due to myocardial infarction provide a substrate for ventricular arrhythmias, and cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) is the golden standard for the quantification of scar tissue magnitude. CMR has still limitations with patients with ICD despite ICD's becoming MR-compatible. We investigated the association between calibrated integrated backscatter (cIBS) and arrhythmia frequency in patients with ICD. METHODS: Thirty-two ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (ICM) patients with VVI-ICD (mean age 66.56 ± 9.05, 28 male, and four female) were divided into three groups accord

Altered dynamic regional homogeneity and neurovascular coupling in multi-frequency bands in patients with cerebral small vascular disease.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) can lead to neurologic deficits and cerebral perfusion injuries. However, the dynamic characteristics of neural function homogeneity and their coupling with cerebral perfusion are rarely elucidated in the sub-frequency bands. The purpose of this study is to explore these features for further understanding of the neural mechanisms of CSVD. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we obtained magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) data and a series of cognitive scores from 27 CSVD patients with mild cognitive impairment (CSVD-MCI), 32 CSVD patients with

Nonideal stability analysis of differentially rotating plasmas with global curvature effects.

The linear stability of global nonaxisymmetric modes in differentially rotating, magnetized, nonideal plasma is critical to classifying turbulence and transport phenomena. We investigate the competition between the local magneto-rotational instability (MRI) and the magneto-curvature instability (MCI)-a distinct nonaxisymmetric low-frequency curvature-driven global branch that appears alongside MRI. To accomplish this, we developed a nonideal global spectral method, which is validated against NIMROD code simulations. This spectral approach allows for the direct derivation of an extended effecti

APOE ɛ2 is associated with white matter hyperintensity volume in CADASIL.

Apolipoprotein E (APOE) increases the risk for Alzheimer’s disease (ɛ4 allele) and cerebral amyloid angiopathy (ɛ2 and ɛ4), but its role in small vessel disease (SVD) is debated. Here we studied the effects of APOE on white matter hyperintensity volume (WMHV) in CADASIL (cerebral autosomal dominant arteriopathy with subcortical infarcts and leukoencephalopathy), a nonamyloidogenic angiopathy and inherited early-onset form of pure SVD. Four hundred and eighty-eight subjects were recruited through a multicenter consortium. Compared with APOE ɛ3/ɛ3, WMHV was increased in APOE ɛ2 (P = 0.02) but no

Resting-state fMRI in temporal lobe epilepsy patients with cognitive impairment: A protocol for systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Temporal lobe epilepsy is a group of neurological diseases caused by the repeated abnormal discharge of brain neurons. Patients with this disease are often accompanied with cognitive impairment. However, the pathogenesis of the cognitive impairment remains unclear. Resting state functional magnetic resonance imaging is a kind of magnetic resonance imaging method based on blood oxygen level dependence. This can reflect the spontaneous brain functional activity of a human brain in the resting state. In recent years, a number of researchers have used resting state functional magnetic

[Severe hydrogen sulfide intoxication: a pediatric case of survival].

We report a paediatric case of survival following severe hydrogen sulfide (H2S) gas intoxication. A 13-year-old boy was found submerged to the neck in a manure tank. He was hypothermic, unresponsive with bilateral mydriasis, and had poor oxygen saturation. After intubation, he was transferred to the paediatric intensive care unit of a tertiary care children's hospital. He developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) requiring high frequency percussive ventilation. Cardiac evaluation was significant for myocardial infarction and left ventricular function impairment. He completely recove
