An improvement in visual acuity accompanied by the development of RPE tear: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) tear is a well-known complication of RPE detachment and is typically associated with significant visual acuity decline. However, in this case, despite the occurrence of an RPE tear there was an unexpected improvement in visual acuity. CASE PRESENTATION: A 68-year-old male presented with blurred vision in his right eye of a month's duration. Pachychoroid neovasculopathy was diagnosed. After monthly anti-vascular endothelial growth factor injections over a three months period. the choroidal neovascular membrane gradually diminished. While the pigment

The effect of sex and laterality on the phenotype of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment.

BACKGROUND: To assess the effect of sex and laterality on clinical features of primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). METHOD: This study is a retrospective analysis of data prospectively collected. We extracted data from two online datasets over a 7-year period of patients older than 16 years who had undergone surgery for primary RRD. Data on baseline characteristics were analyzed to compare males versus females, and right versus left eyes. RESULTS: Of 8133 eyes analyzed, 4342 (53.4%) were right. The overall male predominance (63.7%) was more marked in the age range 50-69 years. Me

Anti-vascular endothelial growth factors in combination with vitrectomy for complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Vitrectomy is an established treatment for the complications of proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR). However, a number of complications can occur during and after vitrectomy for PDR. These include bleeding and the creation of retinal holes during surgery, and bleeding, retinal detachment and scar tissue on the retina after surgery. These complications can limit vision, require further surgery and delay recovery. The use of anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents injected into the eye before surgery has been proposed to reduce the occurrence of these complica

Photoreceptor outer segments in aqueous humor: key to understanding a new syndrome.

Retinal detachment with oral dialyses and tears of the nonpigmented epithelium of the ciliary body sometimes accompanies aqueous cells and high intraocular pressure with its marked fluctuation. The aqueous cells consist predominantly of photoreceptor outer segments which obstruct aqueous outflow at the trabecular meshwork and induce high intraocular pressure as ghost cells do in ghost cell glaucoma. A new clinical entity with the combination of these signs, namely, rhegmatogenous retinal detachment with "photoreceptor outer segment glaucoma" is designated as Schwartz-Matsuo syndrome in this re

[Vitreo-retinal surgery for complicated retinal detachment].

93 eyes (93 patients) of complicated retinal detachment were treated with vitreo-retinal surgery. Among the series, 75 eyes were rhegmatogenous with PVR C3-D3 in 66 eyes (88.0%), while the remaining 18 eyes were traction induced. None of the cases had giant tears or complicating diabetes. On discharge from the hospital, the operation was effective in 62 cases (66.7%), in whom the retina was totally reattached or only a small amount of subretinal fluid remained. In a group of 40 eyes where the inert gas SF6 was used, the operation was effective in 30 cases (75.0%). 41 cases were followed up pos

Silicone oil-induced corneal hydrops?

A 27-year-old man with a personality disorder, who did not have keratoconus previously, recently presented with a clinical picture resembling acute corneal hydrops OS three years after silicone oil injection for a complicated retinal detachment. Although self-induced trauma could not be excluded completely, this case might represent a newly described late corneal complication of intracameral silicone oil.

Retinal detachment after cataract surgery. Predisposing factors.

The authors studied the characteristics of 376 eyes of 361 patients with primary retinal detachment (RD) and surgical aphakia (103 eyes) or pseudophakia (273 eyes). Of the pseudophakic eyes, 17 had an iris-fixated intraocular lens (IOL), 111 had an anterior chamber (AC) IOL, and 145 had a posterior chamber (PC) IOL. Of the PC IOL cases, 48 (33%) had undergone YAG capsulotomy, and 46% of them developed RD within 6 months after capsulotomy. The frequency of no breaks found in pseudophakic RD (15%) was significantly higher than in RD with simple aphakia (5%). The most frequent reasons were incomp

Retinal detachment with breaks in the pars plicata of the ciliary body.

We studied four eyes with retinal detachment accompanied by a break in the nonpigmented epithelium in the pars plicata of the ciliary body in three patients with atopic dermatitis. Each eye had either ectopia lentis or coloboma of the lens. In the region of the lens malformation, ciliary processes were hypoplastic. These rudimentary ciliary processes were observed only in the anterior half of the pars plicata. At their posterior end, the ciliary nonpigmented epithelium had been ruptured and a break by zonular traction was apparent. In the other region of the pars plicata, ciliary processes wer

Treatment of combined traction-rhegmatogenous retinal detachment in the morning glory syndrome.

A 14-year-old boy had a near total retinal detachment associated with the morning glory optic disc anomaly. A tiny slit-like retinal break with adjacent vitreous traction was found within the coloboma, providing communication between the vitreous cavity and the subretinal space. Vitrectomy, fluid-gas exchange, and postoperative confluent Krypton laser photocoagulation around the optic disc resulted in a successful reattachment of the retina. The retina has remained attached for 14 months.

[Initial experiences with primary silicone oil administration into the vitreous cavity in complicated eye injuries].

The authors report on five cases of severe perforating injury of the posterior segment which were initially treated by vitrectomy and subsequent filling of the vitreous cavity with silicone oil. The results so far have been satisfactory in all eyes. The advantages of the method (e.g., tamponade of retinal tears, facilitation of postoperative laser treatment) are emphasized and possible side effects are discussed.
