Coronary heart disease from a life-course approach: findings from the health and retirement study, 1998-2004.

OBJECTIVE: Guided by a life-course approach to chronic disease, this study examined the ways in which childhood deprivation (low parental education and father's manual occupation) may be associated with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHOD: Multilevel modeling techniques and a nationally representative sample of Americans above age 50 from the Health and Retirement Study (HRS; N = 18,465) were used to examine childhood and CHD relationships over the course of 6 years (1998-2004). RESULTS: Having a father with </=8 years of education was associated with 11% higher odds of CHD, accounting for

Prevalence and Clinical Patterns of Piriformis Syndrome Among Actively Competing and Retired Elite Hockey Players.

Piriformis syndrome, a neuromuscular disorder caused by sciatic nerve compression by the piriformis muscle, remains understudied in athletic populations despite anecdotal reports of elevated prevalence in hockey players. This study investigated the prevalence of piriformis syndrome symptoms and potential risk factors in actively competing (current) and retired (former) high-level hockey players. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 67 actively competing and retired professional, collegiate, and junior hockey players (58 males, 9 females; mean age 25.6 ± 4.0 years; mean playing experien

Fitness Does Not Retire: Cardiorespiratory Fitness and Risk of Major Adverse Cardiovascular Events in Older Adults.

AIMS: To evaluate the association between cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF), directly measured as peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak), and the risk of major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in older Norwegian adults. METHODS: A total of 1547 individuals aged 70-77 years (784 women) from the Generation 100 Study, examined in 2012 and 2013, were studied. We defined MACE as the first occurrence of acute myocardial infarction, stroke, heart failure, or cardiovascular death. Sex- and cohort-specific VO2peak categories (20% least fit, 80% fit) were established based on baseline VO2peak and changes over

Evidence for an energy conservation model of inflammaging and immunosenescence in the US Health and Retirement Study and UK Biobank.

The development of chronic inflammation in later life (inflammaging), alongside changes in immune cell profiles and impaired pathogen defense (immunosenescence), contribute to health risk. However, these processes have been hypothesized as adaptive remodeling of the immune system in response to accumulating somatic damage. Here we consider a recently developed theoretical framework to understand their relationship: the Brain-Body Energy Conservation model of aging. This model views immunosenescence as part of an energy conserving response to the rising energy expenditure of inflammaging. This

A national survey on COVID-19 infection in Italian retirement homes for older adults and persons with disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Older people and individuals with chronic illnesses living in long-term care facilities are at increased risk of infections due to the care setting, resulting in an increased probability of contracting SARS-CoV-2 and experiencing severe sequelae during the COVID-19 pandemic. To limit viral transmission, facilities adopted different policies according to national and regional prevention strategies, often reducing social contacts and promoting public health measures. We therefore conducted a national survey to investigate the impact of COVID-19 infection in Italian retirement homes

Subclinical depressive symptoms and job stress differentially impact memory in working and retired older adults.

Retirement has been associated with cognitive decline beyond normal age-related decline. However, there are many individual differences in retirement that can influence cognition. Subclinical depressive symptoms are common in late life and are associated with general memory decline and a bias towards remembering negative events (i.e., better memory for negative vs. positive or neutral stimuli), in opposition to a reported positivity bias (i.e., better memory for positive vs. negative or neutral stimuli) in aging. Furthermore, job stress is often a major contributor to retirement decisions and

Health among Retired Great Britain's Olympic Athletes: A cross-sectional Study of Disease and Multimorbidity.

BACKGROUND: Currently, there is a paucity of long-term health data for retired athletes. This study describes the prevalence of common morbidities and multimorbidity among retired Great Britain's (GB) Olympic athletes, compared to a general population comparator group. METHODS: A cross-sectional study of retired athletes was undertaken. The English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA) served as the reference population. Age- and sex-standardized morbidity ratios (SMRs) and odd ratios (ORs) determined where morbidity and multimorbidity prevalence amongst retired athletes exceeded or were inferi

Assessment of health impacts in retired antisera-producing horses: Blood biochemistry and serum amyloid A analysis.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Horses used for antisera production are repeatedly hyperimmunized to produce high levels of specific antibodies. This prolonged process can lead to various health issues, including amyloidosis, which involves the accumulation of amyloid proteins in organs and tissues, potentially causing organ dysfunction and failure. These horses are often retired when they no longer produce adequate antibody levels. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of prolonged antisera production on the health of retired horses by examining their blood biochemistry and serum amyloid A (SAA) levels

Are retired persons fitter in their psychological capacities than unemployed? A cross-sectional representative study in Germany.

OBJECTIVES: Beyond specific aspects of numerical or verbal intelligence or cognitive speed, a broad range of psychological capacities are generally important in school, job and social life for all age groups. People have to quit the labour market up from a certain age about 65, whereas (younger) unemployed are motivated for return to work. The question is which psychological capacity profiles can be found in different employment groups (employed, mini-jobbers, voluntary service, retired, unemployed). DESIGN: A representative cross-sectional survey was conducted in Germany, reaching 2528 perso

Examining for Cavum Septum Pellucidum and Ventricular Enlargement in Retired Elite-Level Rugby League Players.

OBJECTIVE: A cavum septum pellucidum (CSP) has been reported as a visible brain anomaly in normal individuals as well in some former combat and collision sport athletes. The appearance of CSP with fenestrations and ventricular enlargement are considered associated features of the neuropathological diagnosis of chronic traumatic encephalopathy. The current study examined CSP anatomic features and lateral ventricle size in retired elite rugby league players and controls. METHODS: Forty-one retired rugby league players and 41 healthy community controls, similar in age and education, underwent st

Associations of Loneliness and Social Isolation With Health Span and Life Span in the U.S. Health and Retirement Study.

BACKGROUND: Loneliness and social isolation are emerging public health challenges for aging populations. METHODS: We followed N = 11 302 U.S. Health and Retirement Study participants aged 50-95 from 2006 to 2014 to measure persistence of experiences of loneliness and exposure to social isolation. We tested associations of longitudinal loneliness and social isolation phenotypes with disability, morbidity, mortality, and biological aging through 2018. RESULTS: During follow-up, 18% of older adults met criteria for loneliness, with 6% meeting criteria at 2 or more follow-up assessments. For soc

The Association Between Cytomegalovirus and Disability by Race/Ethnicity and Sex: Results From the Health and Retirement Study.

Recent studies have documented a decline in the overall prevalence of disability in the United States; however, racial/ethnic and sex disparities continue to persist. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, a socially patterned exposure, may be a key mechanism in understanding these previously documented disparities. Using data from a nationally representative study, the 2016 Health and Retirement Study, we employed Poisson log-binomial models to estimate the prevalence of disability in a comparison of CMV-seropositive and -seronegative adults and investigated effect modification by race/ethnicity an

Is loneliness a predictor of the modern geriatric giants? Analysis from the survey of health, ageing, and retirement in Europe.

BACKGROUND: The modern Geriatric Giants have evolved to encompass four new syndromes, of frailty (linked to fatigue and physical inactivity), sarcopenia, anorexia of ageing, and cognitive impairment. In parallel, loneliness has been established as a risk factor for adverse mental and physical health outcomes among older adults. OBJECTIVE: To analyse loneliness as a predictor of the modern Geriatric Giants in European older adults, using a longitudinal design of nationally representative data. DESIGN: Longitudinal population-based cohort study. SUBJECTS: Data from countries that participated

Health as a predictor of early retirement before and after introduction of a flexible statutory pension age in Finland.

BACKGROUND: Little is known of how pension reforms affect the retirement decisions of people with different health statuses, although this is crucial for the understanding of the broader societal impact of pension policies and for future policy development. We assessed how the Finnish statutory pension age reform introduced in 2005 influenced the role of health as a predictor of retirement. METHODS: We used register-based data and cox regression analysis to examine the association of health (measured by purchases of psychotropic medication, hospitalizations due to circulatory and musculoskele

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Findings in the Symptomatic Hips of Younger Retired National Football League Players.

BACKGROUND: American football players have an increased level of risk for hip injuries because of the high level of contact, biomechanical load, and anatomic strain placed on the hip joint. Many injuries are attributed to soft tissue injury rather than intra-articular lesions. However, because of improved imaging and increased knowledge, physicians are attributing unexplained hip pain to intra-articular lesions with increasing frequency. PURPOSE: To assess the prevalence of pathologic intra-articular hip lesions in a younger, retired National Football League (NFL) player cohort evaluated for

The clock drawing test is an independent predictor of incident use of 24-hour care in a retirement community.

BACKGROUND: It is unclear how early cognitive impairment affects future care needs. Furthermore, the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), a commonly used screening tool in the clinical setting, tends to have a ceiling effect for early cognitive decline. One of the earliest changes in cognitive function is executive impairment. We examined the relationship between executive function, measured with a clock drawing protocol (CLOX1) designed to capture executive impairment, and incident need for increased level of care and total mortality. METHODS: Residents (n = 230) in independent living at a
