A prospective evaluation of the Modified Hand Injury Severity Score in predicting return to work.

Hand injuries are the main cause of work-related disability in young adults. We have devised the Modified Hand Injury Scoring System to quantify hand, wrist and forearm injuries. This study aims to determine its value in predicting ability and time taken to return to work after such injury. Prospectively-assigned MHISS at presentation was compared with demographic, injury, employment and quality of life information 40-52months after acute hand or forearm injury. MHISS score was the only variable investigated found to predict ability to return to work. Factors not associated included age at inj

Long-term survivors with adult acute leukemia in complete remission: complications and return to work.

For addressing, and eventually being able to predict and prevent, both disease-related complications and changes in social status in long-term acute leukemia survivors, the follow-up is the most important factor after treatment. To this end, we assessed the complications following the attainment of complete remission in adult acute leukemia patients and the changes in social status of patients surviving more than 5 years after disease onset. In our study population of 42 survivors, 24 (57.1%) suffered from various combinations of 18 types of identified complications including posttransfusion h

Prediction of return-to-work of low back pain patients sicklisted for 3-4 months.

The purpose of this Dutch prospective population-based study was to identify prognostic factors for return-to-work of employees with 3-4 months sick leave due to low back pain (LBP). A cohort of 328 employees was formed and baseline data were collected. One year after the first day of the sick leave, 91% of the original cohort participated in a second interview (n=298). During the baseline measurement, information was collected about health status, history of LBP, occupational variables, job characteristics and social economic variables. At the second interview, 66% of the employees had return

When Mothers are About to Return to Work After Maternity Leave: A Descriptive Study in the Netherlands.

BACKGROUND: The return to work after maternity leave is reported to be a stressful event for many mothers. Yet, little is known about their experience just before returning. This descriptive study explored mothers' evaluation of this period, their levels of anticipatory postpartum work resumption stress (APWRS), their caregiving decisions, and factors that could support them. METHODS: Self-reported data were collected from 236 Dutch mothers of infants planning to return to work within the next month. RESULTS: One in five mothers in our sample assigned an unsatisfactory evaluation rating (fiv

Differences in Time to Return to Work Between Patients Undergoing Staged Versus Simultaneous Bilateral Total Hip Arthroplasty.

BACKGROUND: Patients who undergo total hip arthroplasty (THA) oftentimes have severe osteoarthritis in both hips and may consider staged or simultaneous bilateral THA (bTHA). The goal of this study was to compare the total workdays missed following staged and simultaneous bTHA performed via either postero-lateral (PA) or direct anterior approach (DAA). METHODS: Patients who were (1) employed, (2) underwent a staged (within 12 months) or simultaneous bTHA at our institution between February 1, 2016, and December 31, 2021, (3) completed a return-to-work questionnaire, and (4) had the same surgi

From Clinical Clues to Final Diagnosis: The Return of Detective Work to Clinical Medicine in Cardiac Amyloidosis.

Cardiac amyloidosis is frequently misdiagnosed, denying patients the opportunity for timely and appropriate management of the disease. The purpose of this review and case studies is to raise awareness of the diagnostic "red flags" associated with cardiac amyloidosis and the currently available non-invasive strategies for diagnosis. The review focuses on the identification of one of the two main types of cardiac amyloidosis, transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy, and non-invasive tools to distinguish this from light-chain amyloidosis. A diagnostic algorithm centered around the use of non-invasiv

"Do You Need a Doctor's Note?" Factors Leading to Delayed Return to Work after Blunt Chest Trauma.

BACKGROUND: Blunt chest trauma is associated with significant morbidity, but the long-term functional status for these patients is less well-known. Return to work (RTW) is a benchmark for functional recovery in trauma patients, but minimal data exist regarding RTW following blunt chest trauma. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients ≥ 18 y old admitted to a Level 1 trauma center following blunt chest trauma with ≥ 3 rib fractures and length of stay (LOS) ≥ 3 d were included. An electronic survey assessing RTW was administered to patients after discharge. Patients were stratified as having delayed RTW

Differences in time to return to work among patients undergoing simultaneous versus staged bilateral total knee arthroplasty.

AIMS: Many patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA) have severe osteoarthritis (OA) in both knees and may consider either simultaneous or staged bilateral TKA. The implications of simultaneous versus staged bilateral TKA for return to work are not well understood. We hypothesized that employed patients who underwent simultaneous bilateral TKA would have significantly fewer days missed from work compared with the sum of days missed from each operation for patients who underwent staged bilateral TKA. METHODS: The prospective arthroplasty registry at the Hospital for Special Surgery was

Early, specialist vocational rehabilitation to facilitate return to work after traumatic brain injury: the FRESH feasibility RCT.

BACKGROUND: Up to 160,000 people incur traumatic brain injury (TBI) each year in the UK. TBI can have profound effects on many areas of human functioning, including participation in work. There is limited evidence of the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of vocational rehabilitation (VR) after injury to promote early return to work (RTW) following TBI. OBJECTIVE: To assess the feasibility of a definitive, multicentre, randomised controlled trial (RCT) of the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of early, specialist VR plus usual care (UC) compared with UC alone on work re

A screening questionnaire to predict no return to work within 3 months for low back pain claimants.

The objective of the present study was to develop a short prediction questionnaire for estimating the risk of no return to work (RTW) within 3 months of sick leave to facilitate triage and management of a patient population of subacute low-back pain (LBP) sufferers. We conducted a prospective study with a 3-month follow-up on 186 patients with LBP introducing a claim for sickness benefits to the largest sickness fund in Belgium. Patients completed a screening questionnaire within 2 weeks after claim submission. All patients were invited for clinical assessment, at 6-8 weeks of sick leave, by t

Return to work - estimated socioeconomic impact of spontaneous intracranial hypotension and effects of neurosurgical treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous intracranial hypotension (SIH) due to a spinal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leak is a debilitating but curable condition, often affecting individuals of working age, making a considerably socioeconomic impact likely. METHODS: This monocentric retrospective study in Germany analyzed work capacity in patients ≤65 years before and after surgical closure of a spinal CSF leak between April 2018 and September 2024. The economic burden was evaluated via direct hospital costs and indirect costs from productivity losses. RESULTS: Two hundred and ten patients (median age 45.5 ye

Disclosure of mental illness towards employers during the return to work process after psychiatric hospitalization.

BACKGROUND: For people returning to the workplace after a leave of absence due to a mental illness the decision whether or not to disclose their mental illness is influenced by multiple factors. As part of the RETURN study, that surveyed in-patients with mental disorders in acute psychiatric wards, it was our aim in this secondary analysis to examine the effects of a return-to-work intervention on the disclosure process of employees returning back to their existing workplace after a leave of absence due to a mental illness. METHODS: This study, as part of RETURN, is a multi-center, cluster-ran

Mothers' return to work after a first-born child with a disability: evidence from Norway.

AIMS: Previous research has documented the adverse economic consequences associated with caring for a child with a disability. However, less is known about the mechanisms responsible for these negative employment probabilities. To address this knowledge gap, this study examined differences in return to work following childbirth between mothers of a child with and without a disability, as well as the associated sociodemographic and job-related characteristics. METHOD: We analysed registry data from Statistics Norway. Our study included all first-born children in Norway between 2007 and 2015 an

Improvements in Return to Work Following Lumbar Discectomy With a Bone-Anchored Annular Closure Device.

INTRODUCTION: The true incidences of genitourinary conditions in the modern era are not completely known. We sought to determine the incidence of genitourinary abnormalities in a group of asymptomatic adult patients undergoing axial imaging with virtual colonoscopy. METHODS: We performed a post-hoc analysis of imaging results from a prospective, IRB-approved study that randomized patients to screening "virtual" CT colonography (CTC) followed by standard endoscopic colonoscopy. CTC scans were reviewed separately by an independent radiologist and a urologist for genitourinary abnormalities. Gen
