Elastometry - The biomechanical analysis of the lateral nasal wall.

'Elastometry' is a novel technique that allows for the quantitative assessment of elastic properties of the nasal tissues, providing valuable insights into the dynamic behavior of the external, soft lateral nasal wall. This study aimed to explore the application of 'elastometry' in understanding the biomechanics of the lateral nasal wall and its implications for nasal function in 'elastometry' measurements. After validation of safety and reliability of this method, we investigated mechanical properties of the lateral nasal wall by 'elastometry' using specifically developed measurement forceps

The influence of obturators on the respiration of patients with maxillary defects: a clinical study.

The study evaluated the effects of obturators on respiratory function by analyzing the changes in nasal anatomic structures and physiologic function in maxillectomy patients with and without obturators. Twenty-six patients who underwent maxillectomy were chosen and rehabilitated with obturators by a single maxillofacial prosthodontist. The geometric shape of the nasal cavity, the nasal airway resistance, and the ratio of residual volume to total lung capacity (RV/TLC) were evaluated using acoustic rhinometry, rhinomanometry, and a pulmonary function test apparatus, respectively. All patients w

[Malocclusion and upper airway obstruction].

After more than a century of conjecture and heated argument, the orthodontic relevance of nasal obstruction and its assumed effect on facial growth continues to be debated. Oral respiration disrupts those muscle forces exerted by tongue, cheeks and lips upon the maxillary arch. The main characteristics of the respiratory obstruction syndrome are presence of hypertrophied tonsils or adenoids, mouth breathing, open-bite, cross-bite, excessive anterior face height, incompetent lip posture, excessive appearance of maxillary anterior teeth, narrow external nares, "V" shaped maxillary arch. The purp

Rapid improvement of nasal obstruction after treatment with a non-vasoconstrictive osmotic nasal spray: A prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Nasal obstruction is a highly prevalent symptom that can significantly impair quality of life. Although topical decongestants provide rapid relief, their use is limited by potential adverse effects. Non-vasoconstrictive treatments represent a safer alternative, but data on their immediate effectiveness in clinical practice are limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the short-term effects of a non-vasoconstrictive osmotic nasal spray on subjective symptoms and objective nasal airflow parameters in patients with nasal obstruction. METHODS: This prospective observational study included 83

[Persistent nasal obstruction following septoplasty: deviated nasal pyramid and perpendicular plate].

BACKGROUND: Functional septorhinoplasty (SRP) is a surgical procedure for improvement of symptomatic deformity of the inner and outer nose. Due to inadequate preoperative analysis and consequently insufficient surgical indication, septoplasty (SPL) alone may be performed. A frequent cause for revision septorhinoplasty (rSRP) in our institution was found to be due to a deviated bony pyramid in compound with a contralateral high deviation of the perpendicular plate, ipsilateral reluxation of the cartilaginous septum and a resulting nasal valve stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical record

Assessment of the antiobstructive effect of fexofenadine on nasal allergy challenge in patients with seasonal allergic rhinitis.

The oral administration of fexofenadine 120 mg daily is a common treatment of seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR). It reduces the H1 receptor-mediated symptoms, such as sneezing, pruritus, and nasal secretion as well as non-nasal symptoms such as conjunctivitis. The objective was to assess the effect of fexofenadine on nasal symptoms (such as nasal obstruction) in seasonal allergic rhinitis. A placebo-controlled, double-blind, randomized, cross-over study was performed which yielded evidence that two-week therapy with fexofenadine 120 mg daily in patients with SAR also relieves nasal obstruction

Twenty-five patients (5-15 years old) with perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR) for at least one year were treated with intranasal azelastine. The study was conducted in two separate occasions. In the first study, in a special prepared room, the patients underwent Active Anterior Rhinomanometry (AAR). Twenty minutes later, after 2 drops of saline installed in each nostril, the Total Nasal Resistance (TNR) and Total Nasal Conductance (TNC) were measured. This was followed by the intranasal application of azelastine (0.14 mg/nostril ) and the TNR and TNC were measured at 15,30,60,90 and 120 minutes

[Treatment of nonspecific hyper-reflectory rhinopathy (vasomotor rhinitis) with capsaicin].

Apart from adrenergic and cholinergic neurones, peptidergic neurones are involved in the autonomic control of nasal mucosa. Their transmitter substances are peptides, so-called "neuropeptides". It is assumed that they are released from peptidergic neurones in the nasal mucosa after irritation of receptors by unspecific stimuli, and are responsible for the symptoms of hyperreactive rhinopathy. Repeated topical application of Capsaicin (8-methyl-N-vanillyl-6-nonenamide) leads to a selective degeneration of peptidergic neurones and desensitisation of its receptors in the nasal mucosa. 123 patient
