In 14 cadaveric shoulders, a rotator cuff tear (2 cm wide and 1.5 cm long) was created and repaired under a 3-kg tensile force with the arm in adduction. Strain on the repaired tendon was measured at 0 degrees, 15 degrees, 30 degrees, and 45 degrees of elevation in the sagittal, scapular, and coronal planes and from 60 degrees of internal rotation to 60 degrees of external rotation. The strain in all of the planes decreased significantly with the arm elevated more than 30 degrees. With 30 degrees of elevation in the scapular and coronal planes, the strain increased in internal rotation and dec

This study aims to examine mental rotation performance in children aged 5-15 years across varying rotational angles, and to elucidate the cognitive processing mechanisms and individual differences involved by integrating behavioral data, eye-movement metrics, and self-control capacity. Forty-one children participated in a mental rotation task featuring stimulus orientations of 60°, 120°, 180°, 240°, and 300°. Outcome measures included accuracy, reaction time, fixation duration, fixation count, and mean pupil diameter, complemented by assessments from the Multidimensional Self-Control Scale. Da

We investigate the dynamics of elastic capsules suspended in two-dimensional active nematic fluids using lattice Boltzmann simulations. The capsules, modeled as flexible membranes enclosing active internal regions, exhibit a rich variety of behaviors shaped by their geometry and the interplay between internal and external activity. Circular capsules with active interiors undergo persistent rotation driven by internally confined +1/2 topological defects. Axisymmetric capsules, such as boomerangs, develop directed motion along their axis of symmetry due to unbalanced active forces generated by d

Organic ferroelectrics offer solution processability, mechanical flexibility and promising applications in sensing, energy storage and actuation. However, their polarization and Curie temperatures are typically lower than those of inorganic ferroelectrics because weak intermolecular interactions hinder efficient dipole alignment. The development of organic materials that integrate dipole units, long-range dipole ordering and switchable polarization may enable the design of high-performance organic ferroelectrics. Here we report a donor-acceptor cocrystal in which V-shaped donor molecules pack

A strong magnetic response in materials after time reversal symmetry breaking excitation of circular ionic motion may open avenues for ultrafast control. By combining a pair of perpendicularly polarized terahertz pulses with the right relative delay, we create a chiral terahertz driving field to excite chiral phonon-polaritons in LiNbO3. The magnitude of the ultrafast Faraday rotation probe matches what we would expect from an internal magnetization of ∼10 [Formula: see text] per unit cell, which would require an external magnetic field in excess of 10 Tesla to produce. The Faraday rotation si

A 33-year-old woman with chronic myeloid leukemia and a history of generalized anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder presented to the hospital with severe anxiety. Two days earlier, she reported escalating cancer-related pain despite taking tramadol 100 mg orally three times per day. Following opioid rotation to oxycodone 5 mg orally every six hours as needed, her pain improved, but she developed anxiety and restlessness consistent with opioid withdrawal, prompting hospital evaluation. Her symptoms resolved following opioid dose escalation to oxycodone 10 mg orally every four hours as

Accurate measurement of internal/external rotation joint angle is critical in assessing the shoulder function, especially in the clinical practice as it plays a key role in evaluating activities of daily living and monitoring the rehabilitation progress. This study analyzed the effectiveness of using a marker cluster placed over the proximal epiphysis of the ulna to measure humeral axial rotation with respect to the thorax, comparing it with the traditional method that uses a cluster placed on the upper arm. Data were collected simultaneously using the proposed indirect approach and a conventi

INTRODUCTION: Trapeziometacarpal joint stability during pinch depends on the balance between the opponens pollicis and the first dorsal interosseous muscles, which control pronation and supination of the first metacarpal, respectively. Disruption of this muscular balance may contribute to joint instability in patients with trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis, although the mechanisms underlying movement pattern changes in these patients remain unclear. This study aimed to quantitatively compare thumb rotation patterns during tip pinch between patients with trapeziometacarpal osteoarthtits and hea

BACKGROUND: Patellar dislocations are common, but superior-lateral dislocation with vertical axis rotation is rare and challenging to reduce.
CASE PRESENTATION: A woman in her 20s presented with left knee pain and deformity after minor trauma. Traditional reduction attempts failed due to a vertical rotational component. Reduction was achieved using a technique involving hip flexion, a modified varus-valgus force, and knee extension.
CONCLUSION: Emergency clinicians must recognize complex patellar dislocations and consider early orthopedic consultation to minimize complications.

In gross anatomy labs, the larynx is usually visualized with either a sagittal hemisection or a posterior disarticulation approach. Both fail to maintain the functional in-situ relationships between the intact larynx and adjacent structures. This makes it challenging for students to understand how suprahyoid and infrahyoid muscles, pharyngeal muscles, the tongue, epiglottis, and intrinsic laryngeal muscles are all involved with airway protection and swallowing. We describe a novel approach to cadaveric larynx exposure using a pharyngotomy and mandibular rotation technique, which keeps the lary

PURPOSE: Effective visual perceptual processing is one of the many components of surgical competence. Human face identification is most efficient when viewed upright. However, it is not yet clear how this perception sensitivity impacts eyelid symmetry. This study investigates surgeons' and laypeople's accuracy and efficiency in perceiving eyelid asymmetry from different spatial perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Strength testing of shoulder rotation is commonly used in clinical examinations of the shoulder. People prone to shoulder injury, such as overhead athletes and manual trade workers, place their shoulders under tremendous amounts of stress when the cervical spine is in nonneutral positions. If these nonneutral cervical spine positions result in decreased shoulder strength, it may help explain the etiology of the high prevalence of shoulder injuries in these populations. Given standard clinical strength assessments are performed with a neutral cervical spine, an investigation into th

UNLABELLED: Appendicitis rarely presents with an left lower abdominal pain especially when the intestine is non-rotated or malrotated. Its diagnosis becomes quite troublesome to clinicians and delays prompt intervention. Non-rotation is the most common type of intestinal malrotation. Here, we present a case of a 40-year-old female with previously undiagnosed intestinal non-rotation with left lower abdominal pain and features of localised peritonitis. Abdominal ultrasonography and multidetector computerised tomography showed left-sided appendicitis with intestinal non-rotation. Diagnostic lapar

The automatic diagnosis of various conventional ophthalmic diseases from fundus images is important in clinical practice. However, developing such automatic solutions is challenging due to the requirement of a large amount of training data and the expensive annotations for medical images. This paper presents a novel self-supervised learning framework for retinal disease diagnosis to reduce the annotation efforts by learning the visual features from the unlabeled images. To achieve this, we present a rotation-oriented collaborative method that explores rotation-related and rotation-invariant fe
