Evaluation of the RumiWatchSystem for measuring grazing behaviour of cows.

Feeding behaviour is an important parameter of animal performance, health and welfare, as well as reflecting levels and quality of feed available. Previously, sensors were only used for measuring animal feeding behaviour in indoor housing systems. However, sensors such as the RumiWatchSystem can also monitor such behaviour continuously in pasture-based environments. Therefore, the aim of this study was to validate the RumiWatchSystem to record cow activity and feeding behaviour in a pasture-based system. The RumiWatchSystem was evaluated against visual observation across two different experime

The effect of size and density on the mean retention time of particles in reindeer (Rangifer tarandus).

Particle passage from the reticulorumen (RR) depends on particle density and size. A classic way of assessing these effects is the use of plastic markers of varying density and size that are recovered in the faeces. Here, we report results of an experiment where four fistulated reindeer (Rangifer tarandus, 96 ± 12 kg) were fed two different diets (browse, voluntary dry matter intake [DMI] 70 ± 10 g/kg0.75/d; or a pelleted diet, DMI 124 ± 52 g/kg0.75/d) and dosed via fistula with 8 different particle types combining densities of 1.03, 1.22 and 1.44 g/ml and sizes of 1, 10 and 20 mm. Generally,

Feeding up to 91% concentrate to Holstein and Jersey dairy cows: Effects on enteric methane emission, rumen fermentation and bacterial community, digestibility, production, and feeding behavior.

Due to climate change, periods of drought might be longer and occur more frequently, which challenges roughage production and requires changed feeding of dairy cattle by increasing the grain content of the diet. This study investigated the effect of diets with concentrate proportions up to 91% of dry matter on dry matter intake (DMI), milk production, enteric methane emission, rumen fermentation, rumen bacterial community structure, nutrient digestibility, and feeding behavior of Holstein and Jersey dairy cows. Twelve Danish Holstein and 12 Danish Jersey cows were fed ad libitum with one of 3

Helminths of sheep and goats in desert areas of south-west Mauritania (Trarza).

Faecal samples were obtained from sheep and goats before, during and after the rainy season at three locations in south-west Mauritania. Several animals were also necropsied at the same time. Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent worm. Infection by digestive-tract strongyles and Strongyloides papillosus was always very light (prevalence less than 20%). Sheep were more heavily infected than goats but animals under 1 year of age were not infected by digestive-tract strongyles. It is likely that young small ruminants became infected during the rainy season and that the parasites so acquired

The Effects of C4 Forage Silage with Different Water-Soluble Carbohydrate Contents on the Growth Performance, Apparent Digestibility, Rumen Fermentation, and Rumen Microbial Community of Buffaloes.

Water-soluble carbohydrate (WSC) is the key to producing quality forage silage and an important energy source for ruminants. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of different silages used as roughage sources [whole-plant sugarcane silage (WSS) vs. elephant grass silage (EGS)] with varying levels of WSC on silage quality, buffalo growth performance, apparent digestibility, rumen fermentation, and microbial communities. Sixteen healthy male crossbred buffaloes were randomly divided into two treatment groups, with eight buffaloes/treatment. One group was fed whole-plant sugarcane s

Inclusion Prosopis juliflora Pod Meal in Grazing Lambs Diets: Performance, Digestibility, Ingestive Behavior and Nitrogen Balance.

Prosopis juliflora is an arboreal legume that concentrates its nutritive value in pods (fruits), constituting a rich source of carbohydrates and with a crude energy concentration comparable to ground corn. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the effect of inclusion of Prosopis juliflora pod meal (0 or control, 250, 500 and 750 g/kg total DM) as a replacement for ground corn in the diet of lambs on performance, digestibility, ingestive behavior, and nitrogen balance of lambs grazing in the Megathyrsus maximus pasture. Forty Santa Inês uncastrated lambs with an average body weight (BW) of 24.2 ± 0.5

Comparing noninvasive sampling techniques with standard cannula sampling method for ruminal microbial analysis.

Rumen microbes play an important role in the conversion of indigestible plant material to energy and protein in dairy cows. Sampling for ruminal contents via cannula is considered the gold standard technique for microbial analysis, but the technique requires ruminally cannulated animals and specialized animal facilities. The purpose of this study was to determine whether other sampling methods and locations along the digestive tract may serve as noninvasive proxies to the cannula method for microbial analysis. Six ruminally cannulated lactating Holstein dairy cows were adapted to a standard to

Bioprocessing of mixed oil palm by-products with single and consortium white-rot fungi: Effects on nutritional quality, in vitro rumen fermentation, methane production, and rumen microbial populations.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Oil palm by-products are abundant lignocellulosic resources with considerable potential as sustainable ruminant feed but are constrained by poor digestibility and limited rumen fermentability. White-rot fungi (WRF) produce ligninolytic enzymes capable of modifying lignocellulosic biomass, whereas fungal consortia may enhance substrate bioconversion through complementary enzymatic activities. This study evaluated the effects of single and consortium WRF on the nutritional quality, in vitro rumen fermentation, digestibility, methane (CH4) production, and rumen microbial popul

Methane production by two non-ruminant foregut-fermenting herbivores: The collared peccary (Pecari tajacu) and the pygmy hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis).

Methane (CH4) production varies between herbivore species, but reasons for this variation remain to be elucidated. Here, we report open-circuit chamber respiration measurements of CH4 production in four specimens each of two non-ruminant mammalian herbivores with a complex forestomach but largely differing in body size, the collared peccary (Pecari tajacu, mean body mass 17kg) and the pygmy hippopotamus (Hexaprotodon liberiensis, 229kg) fed lucerne-based diets. In addition, food intake, digestibility and mean retention times were measured in the same experiments. CH4 production averaged 8 and

Nutritional composition, bioactive potential, and in vitro rumen fermentation of tropical brown (Sargassum binderi) and green (Kappaphycus striatum) seaweeds as functional feed additives for ruminants.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Mitigating enteric methane emissions in ruminants remains a global challenge in achieving sustainable livestock production. Although seaweed supplementation has shown promising results, most research has focused on temperate species, leaving tropical species underexplored. This study investigated the nutritional composition, bioactive compounds, and in vitro rumen fermentation characteristics of two tropical seaweeds, brown seaweed (Sargassum binderi) and green seaweed (Kappaphycus striatum), as potential functional feed additives for ruminants. Modeling reticular and ventral ruminal pH of lactating dairy cows using ingestion and rumination behavior.

The prevention and control of metabolic and digestive diseases is an enormous challenge in dairy farming. Subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA) is assumed to be the most severe feed-related disorder and it impairs both animal health and economic efficiency. Currently, ruminal pH as well as variables derived from the daily pH curve are the main indicators for SARA. The objective of this study was to explain the daily pH course in the ventral rumen and reticulum of dairy cows using ingestion pattern and rumination behavior data gathered by automated data recording systems. The data of 13 ruminally fi

Effects of varying particle size of forage on digestion and chewing behavior of dairy heifers.

Eighteen Holstein heifers were fed long and chopped coarse and fine alfalfa hay ad libitum to evaluate effects of physical form on digestion and chemical composition of feed and fecal particles and to examine the applicability of a sinusoidal model to chewing behavior. Recordings of jaw movement were divided into 1-h segments for analysis. Least square mean size of fecal particles from coarse and finely chopped diets were 290 and 297 micrometers as compared to 227 micrometers on long hay. Intakes of dry matter were greater an digestibilities lower for chopped as compared to long hay. Crude pro

Whole corn grain utilisation in dairy goats is determined by rumen retention rather than intestinal digestive capacity.

The small intestinal starch digestion of ruminants is limited, potentially due to inadequate pancreatic α-amylase secretion. Previous studies confirmed that leucine stimulates amylase release. But the core scientific problem remains whether increasing intestinal amylase availability can improve dry whole corn (DWC) utilisation, and which digestive site dominates DWC starch digestion in goats. This study aimed to verify the effects of rumen-protected leucine (RP-Leu) and amylase (RP-Amy) on DWC utilisation of goats, and identify the primary site of starch digestion. In Experiment 1, eighteen ca

Effect of feeding long or short wheat hay v. wheat silage in the ration of lactating cows on intake, milk production and digestibility.

The objective of this study was to evaluate in lactating cows the effect of either chopping or ensiling of wheat roughage on: intake, digestibility, lactation performance and animal behavior. Three groups of 14 lactating cows each, were fed total mixed rations (TMRs) based on either long wheat hay (HL), short wheat hay (HS) or wheat silage (SI), as the sole roughage source (30% of TMR dry matter (DM)). Parameters examined: sorting behavior, DM intake, milk yield and composition, rumination, recumbence, average daily rumen pH, digesta passage rate, and in-vivo digestibility. Performance data wa

Forage characteristics as drivers of variation in enteric methane emission in cattle and sheep: a meta-analysis.

A meta-analysis was performed to determine whether improved forage quality is equally effective at reducing CH4 yield from cattle and sheep. Accordingly, ruminants were categorised into three classes: lactating dairy cattle, other cattle (i.e., beef cattle and non-lactating dairy cattle), and sheep. Data from 24 studies (109 treatment means) met the selection criteria for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The relationship between CH4 yield (g/kg DM intake (DMI) and g/kg digestible OM intake (DOMI); CH4/DMI and CH4/DOMI, respectively) and forage quality characteristics (apparent total tract organ

Effects of calcium-magnesium carbonate and calcium-magnesium hydroxide as supplemental sources of magnesium on microbial fermentation in a dual-flow continuous culture.

Supplemental sources of Mg can also aid in ruminal pH regulation due to their alkaline properties. Magnesium oxide (MgO) is the most common source of Mg for ruminants and can help controlling ruminal pH; however, the alkaline potential of other sources of Mg has not been evaluated. We aimed to evaluate the inclusion of calcium-magnesium carbonate (CaMg(CO3)2) and calcium-magnesium hydroxide (CaMg(OH)4) alone or in combination as supplemental sources of Mg in corn silage-based diets and its impact on ruminal microbial fermentation. We hypothesized that inclusion of CaMg(OH)4 would allow for rum
