Physician Preferences and Prescribing Patterns for Hypertonic and Isotonic Saline Solutions in Upper Respiratory Symptom Management: A Multinational Clinical Practice Survey Across 13 Countries.

BACKGROUND: Managing respiratory symptoms in patients with comorbidities presents complex therapeutic challenges due to the risk of drug interactions and contraindications associated with conventional treatments, requiring careful consideration of treatment options. Recent interest in natural therapeutic alternatives, especially seawater-based nasal sprays, reflects evolving physician attitudes and unmet clinical needs. Despite widespread clinical application, multinational data on physician perspectives toward isotonic and hypertonic saline therapies remain limited, particularly in patients w

Locust Bean Gum: A Natural Polysaccharide as an Eco-Friendly Corrosion Inhibitor for N80 Carbon Steel in CO2-Saturated Saline Solution, Useful for the Oil and Gas Industry.

This study evaluated locust bean gum (LBG), a polysaccharide thickening agent, as an anti-corrosion active compound against sweet corrosion for N80 carbon steel used in the oil and gas sector. The assessment involved weight loss and electrochemical measurements at different temperatures (e.g., 25 °C and 80 °C) and immersion durations (up to 168 h) in a CO2-saturated 2 wt.% KCl solution. The electrochemical results showed that LBG effectively inhibited sweet corrosion at both temperatures, and its efficacy increased with its concentration, reaching maximum inhibition efficiency of 84.11% at 25

Nosocomial Outbreak of Ralstonia pickettii Infections Likely Linked to Saline Solutions in Germany from August 2023 to March 2024-Challenges in Medical Product-Related Outbreaks.

In December 2023, the World Health Organization reported an Australian nosocomial Ralstonia pickettii outbreak caused by contaminated saline solutions, causing bloodstream infections. The Antibiotic Resistance Surveillance, a Germany-wide laboratory network, has identified five R. pickettii-bacteraemia cases since August 2023 (0-1 annually 2019-2022), prompting an outbreak investigation to identify the source. We defined a case as a person with R. pickettii in any material (possible) or in blood culture (probable), confirmed if in the genetic outbreak cluster. We implemented nationwide R. pick

Comparison of high-performance liquid chromatography with a radiometric assay for determination of the effect of intra-articular administration of corticosteroid and saline solution on synovial fluid hyaluronate concentration in horses.

Two recently developed direct methods, radioassay-125I-labeled hyaluronic acid binding protein (125I-HABP)- and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), were used to assess and compare the concentration of hyaluronate (HA) in synovial fluid of horses. Also determined were changes in the HA concentration in an experimental treatment model involving physiologic saline solution (PSS)-irrigated or methylprednisolone acetate-injected tarsocrural joints of clinically normal horses. Serum HA concentration was determined simultaneously, using the 125I-HABP assay. Synovial fluid HA concentration

Ion Homeostasis in Chloroplasts under Salinity and Mineral Deficiency: II. Solute Distribution between Chloroplasts and Extrachloroplastic Space under Excess or Deficiency of Sulfate, Phosphate, or Magnesium.

Spinach (Spinacia oleracea var "Yates") plants grown hydroponically were exposed to an excess or deficiency of various mineral ions. Solutes were measured in leaf extracts and in isolated intact chloroplasts. Under phosphate (120 millimoles per liter NaH(2) PO(4)), sulfate (200 millimolar per liter (Na(2) SO(4)), or magnesium excess (150 millimolar per liter MgCl(2)), concentrations of these ions in leaf extracts increased, but in chloroplasts, concentrations of all ions remained constant. Concentrations of quarternary ammonium compounds in chloroplasts increased. Under mild phosphate or magne

A Retrospective Health Economic Analysis of a Stable Hypochlorous Acid Preserved Wound Cleanser Versus 0.9% Saline Solution as Instillation for Negative-Pressure Wound Therapy in Severe and Infected Wounds.

Introduction Negative-pressure wound therapy (NPWT) with instillation and dwell time is an accepted adjunct therapy for infected wounds. A study was conducted to assess whether the use of hypochlorous acid preserved wound cleanser (HAPWOC) (Vashe, Urgo Medical North America, Fort Worth, TX, USA) as the irrigant would reduce the cost of care in comparison to 0.9% saline (NaCl). Method A comparative, observational, retrospective analysis assessed 27 serious and infected wounds in 24 patients. The lesions were of different and complex etiologies, including necrotizing fasciitis and stage IV diabe

Effects of high-dose furosemide and small-volume hypertonic saline solution infusion in comparison with a high dose of furosemide as bolus in refractory congestive heart failure: long-term effects.

BACKGROUND: Diuretics have been accepted as first-line treatment in refractory congestive heart failure (CHF), but a lack of response to them is a frequent event. A randomized, single-blind study was performed to evaluate the effects of the combination of high-dose furosemide and small-volume hypertonic saline solution (HSS) infusion in the treatment of refractory New York Heart Association (NYHA) class IV CHF and a normosodic diet during follow-up. Materials and Methods One hundred seven patients (39 women and 68 men, age range 65-90 years) with refractory CHF (NYHA class IV) of different eti

Editorial Commentary: Epinephrine Solution in Arthroscopic Irrigation Fluid Is Marginally Superior to Intravenous Tranexamic Acid, but Should We Focus Instead on Using Ringer's Lactate Instead of Normal Saline for Arthroscopic Clarity?

Using a double-blinded randomized technique, a matched cohort of shoulder arthroscopic surgeries was compared and evaluated for visual clarity of the surgical field. Epinephrine in a 0.9% saline irrigation solution was marginally superior to an intravenous infusion of tranexamic acid. It is unknown whether 0.9% saline is inferior to a solution of Ringer's lactate irrigation when evaluating loss of clarity as a result of intraoperative bleeding during arthroscopy.

Efficacy and safety of a balanced salt solution versus a 0.9% saline infusion for the prevention of contrast-induced acute kidney injury (BASIC trial): a study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is one of the most common causes of iatrogenic kidney injury and, therefore, its prevention is an important issue. However, whether the administration of 0.9% saline is the optimal prophylaxis method remains uncertain due to its supra-physiologic chloride component. In particular, recent studies suggest that chloride-restricted solutions showed superiority over 0.9% saline in several clinical settings. METHODS/DESIGN: The investigators designed a multicenter randomized controlled trial to compare the efficacy of a balanced salt solutio

Salt repletion and diuretic response: The role of serum chloride. A post-hoc analysis of the SALT-HF trial on furosemide and hypertonic saline solution administration in ambulatory patients with worsening heart failure.

AIMS: The efficacy of combining hypertonic saline solution (HSS) with loop diuretics in worsening heart failure (WHF) remains uncertain. Hypochloraemia has been associated with reduced diuretic efficacy. Some authors propose that chloride repletion may enhance natriuretic and diuretic responses. This post-hoc analysis of the SALT-HF trial evaluated the effect of single-dose administration of HSS plus intravenous (IV) furosemide versus IV furosemide, stratified by baseline serum chloride. METHODS AND RESULTS: The analysis included 148 ambulatory patients with WHF from the double-blind, randomi

Coagulation and biochemical effects of balanced salt-based high molecular weight vs saline-based low molecular weight hydroxyethyl starch solutions during the anhepatic period of liver transplantation.

The anhepatic period of liver transplantation is generally marked by a decrease in preload, and the infusion of hydroxyethyl starch (HES) solution is often an effective way to restore volume deficits in non-anaemic patients. However, the infusion of even limited amounts of HES solution during the anhepatic period may result in a worsening coagulopathy. Moreover, lactate-containing HES solution may cause some degree of biochemical derangements in compromised recipients. Therefore, we compared two different types of HES solutions: a balanced salt-based high molecular weight HES solution (670/0.7

Intracardiac (superior vena cava/right atrial) ECGs using saline solution as the conductive medium for the proper positioning of the Shiley hemodialysis catheter: is it not time to forego [correction of forgo] the postinsertion chest radiograph?

Hemodialysis (HD) is often administered in critical care areas to patients with chronic renal failure as a continuation of the HD they are receiving on an ambulatory basis, and to patients who develop such a need for the first time or may require HD only transiently. The double-lumen Shiley central venous catheter (SCVC), inserted via the brachiocephalic veins, is often employed for HD, and it is customary to obtain a chest radiograph to ensure proper positioning of the tip of the SCVC within the superior vena cava (SVC) or high right atrium (RA). This practice is implemented to evaluate for c
