Sire: An interoperability engine for prototyping algorithms and exchanging information between molecular simulation programs.

Sire is a Python/C++ library that is used both to prototype new algorithms and as an interoperability engine for exchanging information between molecular simulation programs. It provides a collection of file parsers and information converters that together make it easier to combine and leverage the functionality of many other programs and libraries. This empowers researchers to use sire to write a single script that can, for example, load a molecule from a PDBx/mmCIF file via Gemmi, perform SMARTS searches via RDKit, parameterize molecules using BioSimSpace, run GPU-accelerated molecular dynam

Dr. Google vs. Dr. ChatGPT: Exploring the Use of Artificial Intelligence in Ophthalmology by Comparing the Accuracy, Safety, and Readability of Responses to Frequently Asked Patient Questions Regarding Cataracts and Cataract Surgery.

PURPOSE: Patients are using online search modalities to learn about their eye health. While Google remains the most popular search engine, the use of large language models (LLMs) like ChatGPT has increased. Cataract surgery is the most common surgical procedure in the US, and there is limited data on the quality of online information that populates after searches related to cataract surgery on search engines such as Google and LLM platforms such as ChatGPT. We identified the most common patient frequently asked questions (FAQs) about cataracts and cataract surgery and evaluated the accuracy, s

Evaluation of Google Search Trends for Liver Diseases in Europe.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Chronic liver diseases belong to the most common diseases worldwide and are associated with increased morbidity and mortality. Although more than one in three adults are estimated to have metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), awareness of this condition is low amongst the general public, health care professionals and policy makers. However, meaningful knowledge transfer is essential for raising awareness and improving prevention and treatment. This study set out to investigate the use of the major internet search engine to understand how knowled

Seasonal variation in the internet searches for gout: an ecological study.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVE: While few studies with various types of outcomes and methodology have investigated the seasonality of gout, no internet data has been used in any study. This novel methodology may complement and extend the previous traditional data sources and has increasingly been used in investigating the seasonality of health conditions. Therefore, the objective of this study was to utilize the Google Trends data to test whether there is a seasonal variation in the internet searches for gout on a population basis. METHODS: In this observational ecological study, the Google Trends wa

The Influence of Media Coverage and Governmental Policies on Google Queries Related to COVID-19 Cutaneous Symptoms: Infodemiology Study.

BACKGROUND: During COVID-19, studies have reported the appearance of internet searches for disease symptoms before their validation by the World Health Organization. This suggested that monitoring of these searches with tools including Google Trends may help monitor the pandemic itself. In Europe and North America, dermatologists reported an unexpected outbreak of cutaneous acral lesions (eg, chilblain-like lesions) in April 2020. However, external factors such as public communications may also hinder the use of Google Trends as an infodemiology tool. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to assess the

The impact of ultraviolet radiation on sunburn-related search activity.

We establish a strong, positive relationship between the Ultraviolet Index and Google search engine activity for sunburn-related terms in the United States. Using the Google Trends utility and data available from the National Weather service, we combine data from a twelve-year period to produce panel data for each state. We fit a time-series regression model of search activity and perform statistical tests on the resulting parameter estimates. This study lays the groundwork for using search-related data to assess the prevalence of, and attitudes about sunburn. By tracking the frequency of sear
