A causal role for the right angular gyrus in self-location mediated perspective taking.

Recent theories suggest that self-consciousness, in its most elementary form, is functionally disconnected from the phenomenal body. Patients with psychosis frequently misattribute their thoughts and actions to external sources; and in certain out-of-body experiences, lucid states, and dreams body-ownership is absent but self-identification is preserved. To explain these unusual experiences, we hypothesized that self-identification depends on inferring self-location at the right angular gyrus (i.e., perspective-taking). This process relates to the discrimination of self-produced signals (endog

10 Hz rTMS over right parietal cortex alters sense of agency during self-controlled movements.

A large body of fMRI and lesion-literature has provided evidence that the Inferior Parietal Cortex (IPC) is important for sensorimotor integration and sense of agency (SoA). We used repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) to explore the role of the IPC during a validated SoA detection task. 12 healthy, right-handed adults were included. The effects of rTMS on subjects' SoA during self-controlled movements were explored. The experiment consisted of 1/3 self-controlled movements and (2)/3 computer manipulated movements that introduced uncertainty as to whether the subjects were agent

Adaptive Balance in Posterior Cerebellum.

Vestibular and optokinetic space is represented in three-dimensions in vermal lobules IX-X (uvula, nodulus) and hemisphere lobule X (flocculus) of the cerebellum. Vermal lobules IX-X encodes gravity and head movement using the utricular otolith and the two vertical semicircular canals. Hemispheric lobule X encodes self-motion using optokinetic feedback about the three axes of the semicircular canals. Vestibular and visual adaptation of this circuitry is needed to maintain balance during perturbations of self-induced motion. Vestibular and optokinetic (self-motion detection) stimulation is enco

Exposure to chronic mild stress alters thresholds for lateral hypothalamic stimulation reward and subsequent responsiveness to amphetamine.

Chronic mild stress in rodents has been proposed to model some of the environmental factors that contribute to the induction of depressive disorders in humans. This model is based on the hypothesis that chronic mild stress induces a change in brain reward function that resembles the symptomatology of major depression, namely, a decrease in responsiveness to rewarding stimuli. The purpose of the first experiment was to investigate whether chronic mild stress affects brain reward function as measured by alterations in lateral hypothalamic self-stimulation behavior in rats. Exposure to chronic mi

Cannabis use to manage stimulant cravings among people who use unregulated drugs.

BACKGROUND: We sought to analyze the association between cannabis use to manage stimulant cravings and self-reported changes in stimulant use among structurally marginalized people who use unregulated drugs (PWUD). METHODS: The data for this secondary analysis was collected from a cross-sectional questionnaire administered to people who concurrently use cannabis and unregulated stimulants in Vancouver, Canada. We used logistic regression models to analyze the association between cannabis use to manage stimulant cravings and self-reported changes in the frequency of stimulant use. RESULTS: In

Male Urogenital System Mapped Onto the Sensory Cortex: Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging Evidence.

INTRODUCTION: The projection of the human male urogenital system onto the paracentral lobule has not previously been mapped comprehensively. AIM: To map specific urogenital structures onto the primary somatosensory cortex toward a better understanding of sexual response in men. METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we mapped primary somatosensory cortical responses to self-stimulation of the penis shaft, glans, testicles, scrotum, rectum, urethra, prostate, perineum, and nipple. We further compared neural response with erotic and prosaic touch of the penile shaft. MAIN OUTCO

Quantitative assessment of human-exoskeleton integration through a neurophysiological marker of embodiment.

Assistive exoskeletons are increasingly used in rehabilitation settings, yet their adoption in real-world scenarios remains limited. This is partly due to the insufficient understanding of human-device interaction mechanisms. The process through which the central nervous system integrates external devices is known as "tool embodiment" and is primarily assessed through subjective questionnaires. This protocol aims to identify a quantitative marker of embodiment by leveraging the phenomenon of sensory attenuation, i.e., the modulation of sensory stimulation intensity perception as a function of

Enhanced proliferation and migration of fibroblast cells by skin-attachable and self-cleaning triboelectric nanogenerator.

Skin wounds are common in accidental injuries, surgical operations, and chronic diseases. The migration and proliferation of fibroblast cells are fundamental to wound healing, which can be promoted by electrical stimulation as a physical therapy modality. Therefore, the development of portable electrical stimulation devices that can be used by patients on-site is an essential need. In the present study, a self-cleaning triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) has been fabricated for enhancing cell proliferation and migration. The polycaprolactone‑titanium dioxide (PCL/TiO2) and polydimethylsiloxane

A red nucleus-VTA glutamate pathway underlies exercise reward and the therapeutic effect of exercise on cocaine use.

Physical exercise is rewarding and protective against drug abuse and addiction. However, the neural mechanisms underlying these actions remain unclear. Here, we report that long-term wheel-running produced a more robust increase in c-fos expression in the red nucleus (RN) than in other brain regions. Anatomic and functional assays demonstrated that most RN magnocellular portion (RNm) neurons are glutamatergic. Wheel-running activates a subset of RNm glutamate neurons that project to ventral tegmental area (VTA) dopamine neurons. Optogenetic stimulation of this pathway was rewarding, as assesse

Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation over the Posterior Parietal Cortex Increases Nontarget Retrieval during Visual Working Memory.

Visual working memory (VWM) requires precise feature binding. Previous studies have revealed a close relationship between the posterior parietal cortex (PPC) and feature binding during VWM; this study further examined their causal relationship through three transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) experiments. In Experiment 1 (N = 57), participants underwent three sessions of tDCS separately, including PPC stimulation, occipital cortex stimulation, and sham stimulation, and completed delayed estimation tasks for orientations before and after stimulation. Results showed that tDCS over PPC

Modulation of somatoparaphrenia following left-hemisphere damage.

Somatoparaphrenic symptoms after left-hemisphere damage are rare. To verify the potential role of body-related sensory (proprioceptive, visual, and somatosensory) manipulation in patients experiencing sensations of hand disownership, the symptoms of a patient suffering from right-hand somatoparaphrenia were monitored and clinical and neuropsychological variables were controlled. Four types of manipulation were administered: changes in spatial position of the hand, multisensory stimulation, and self-observation using video or mirrors. Multisensory visuo-tactile stimulation was efficacious in te

The form and function of challenging behaviours.

Aspects of the topography and behavioural function underlying the challenging behaviours of all people with learning disabilities and challenging behaviour (n = 70) in a defined geographical area were investigated. Results indicated that: (1) more severe challenging behaviours were shown by people with more severe disabilities; (2) a significant minority (44%) of people showed more than one form of challenging behaviour, this rising to 79% among people with more severe challenging behaviours; and (3) cross-sectional analyses revealed specific clusters of problematic, aggressive and self-injuri

IPL-M1 interaction shapes pre-reflective social differentiation in the human action system: new insights from TBS and TMS combined.

The conscious experience of being the author of our own actions is thought to be grounded in pre-reflective and low-level sensorimotor representations of the self as different from the other. It has been suggested that the inferior parietal lobe (IPL) is generally involved in self-other differentiation processes and in providing an explicit sense of action authorship. However, direct evidence for its causal and functional role in distinguishing self-related and other-related sensorimotor representations is lacking. The current study employed theta-burst stimulation (TBS) to condition left IPL'

Induced self-motion in central vision.

Previous research on visually induced self-motion found that stimulation of the central visual field (up to 30 degrees in diameter) results in perceived object motion while self-motion requires peripheral stimulation. In the present study, perceived self-motion was induced with a radially expanding pattern simulating observer motion through a space filled with dots, with visual angles of 7.5 degrees, 10.6 degrees, 15 degrees, and 21.2 degrees. Speed and texture density were also varied. The duration of reported self-motion (a) decreased with increased speed, (b) failed to increase with increas

BET proteins inhibitor JQ1 impairs GM-CSF-promoted peritoneal macrophage self-renewal and IL-4-induced alternative polarization.

Peritoneal macrophages (PMs), which resided in peritoneal cavity, are crucial to maintain tissue homeostasis and immunity. Macrophage self-renewal and polarization states are critical for PM population homeostasis and function. However, the underlying molecular mechanism that regulates self-renewal and polarization of PMs is still unclear and needs to be explored. Here, we demonstrated that PMs self-renewal was stimulated by granulocyte macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), but not by macrophage colony-stimulating factor (M-CSF). Online HD-tRNS Over the Right Temporoparietal Junction Modulates Social Inference But Not Motor Coordination.

Social interactions are fundamental to human cognition, with the right temporoparietal junction (rTPJ) playing a key role in integrating motor coordination and social inference. While transcranial random noise stimulation (tRNS) is a promising technique for modulating cortical excitability in real time, its effect on dynamic social processes remains largely unexplored. This study applied high-definition tRNS (HD-tRNS) over the rTPJ during an interactive task to modulate motor coordination and social inference. Eighty neurotypical adults (49 female) were equally distributed across two experimen

Short Pulse and Conventional Deep Brain Stimulation Equally Improve the Parkinsonian Gait Disorder.

BACKGROUND: Gait disturbances and balance remain challenging issues in Parkinsonian patients (PD) with deep brain stimulation (DBS). Short pulse deep brain stimulation (spDBS) increases the therapeutic window in PD patients, yet the effect on gait and postural symptoms remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: We assessed the efficacy of spDBS compared to conventional DBS (cDBS) within the subthalamic nucleus (STN) on Parkinsonian gait. METHODS: The study was a single-centre, randomized, double-blind, clinical short-term trial. 20 PD patients were studied postoperatively in three different conditions (DBS
