Haptic devices as a paradigm to enhance learning/function--theory and empirical studies.

Haptics is a modern term employed to describe both afferent and efferent flows of forces with humans. The appropriate design of these force flow fields when coordinated with information to and from computers and other devices to physically challenged individuals can empower the performance of certain tasks previously not attainable. Extensive empirical work presented herein has demonstrated that proper augmentation of particular dynamic force fields, synchronised with certain cognitive tasks, can lead to improved functionality. More specifically, studies in spasticity, weaken responses and hav

Developing Accessible Assistive Technology for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing by Deploying a Fine-Tuned Deep Neural Network to the Web.

This paper details the development of a deep neural network, and an accompanying application, capable of classifying and detecting five target classes important to the deaf and hard-of-hearing: a running faucet, a dripping faucet, a car engine, a car horn, and a fridge alarm. These classes were based on questionnaire results from previous research, which concluded with a long short-term memory (LSTM) model and an augmented self-captured dataset, but fell short of developing a mobile application as originally planned. To make such an application possible, this subsequent research primarily focu

Assistive technology use and unmet need in Canada.

BACKGROUND: Around the world, variations and inequities in access to assistive technology (AT) are evident. Development of legislation, policies, and programmes has not kept pace with the increasing demand for AT. Therefore, context-specific needs assessment is required, which can assist in anticipating the accessibility and human support needs of individuals with impairments, and in turn, inform resource allocation and prioritisation of services. The purpose of this cross-sectional study was to describe the current use and unmet needs of AT use in community-dwelling Canadians experiencing act
