'It's especially good just to know that you're not the only one': a qualitative study exploring experiences with online peer support programmes for the Fragile X community.

BACKGROUND: Accessing peer support can be difficult for people with, or carers of people with, inherited intellectual disabilities. One way to improve access is to provide services online, yet few studies have explored people's experiences with online peer support programmes. We aimed to explore experiences with such programmes for communities affected by fragile X-associated conditions. METHODS: Qualitative study involving individual semi-structured interviews with 16 people with, or carers of people with, a fragile X-associated condition (n = 4 adult premutation carriers; n = 12 parents/car

Importance of Group Therapeutic Support for Family Members of Children with Alopecia Areata: A Cross-Sectional Survey Study.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The psychological effect of alopecia areata (AA) is well documented, but group interaction may help lessen this burden. We aimed to determine factors that draw patients with AA and their families to group events. METHODS: Surveys were administered at the annual alopecia areata bowling social in 2015 and 2016. This event is a unique opportunity for children with AA and their families to meet others with the disease and connect with local support group resources from the Minnesota branch of the National Alopecia Areata Foundation. Data from 2015 and 2016 were combined. Co

Motivational intervention: an individual counselling vs a group treatment approach for alcohol-dependent in-patients.

AIMS: The present study aimed to evaluate whether individual counselling for alcohol-dependent patients in three sessions is as effective as a 2-week group treatment programme as part of an in-patient stay in a psychiatric hospital which was to foster motivation to seek further help and to strengthen the motivation to stay sober. Of particular importance was the external validity of the results, i.e. a 'normal' intake load of in-patients in detoxification and a wide variety of motivation to stop drinking were to be investigated. METHODS: Subjects eligible for the study were all patients with

Comparison of brief group therapies for depressed cancer patients receiving radiation treatment.

Although many studies have documented patterns of emotional distress in persons undergoing radiation treatment for cancer, there have been few controlled evaluations of counseling or psychotherapy outcomes with these persons. In this research, the effects of cognitive-behavioral and socially supportive group therapy were evaluated. A total of 72 depressed cancer patients were randomly assigned to one of three conditions--cognitive-behavioral treatment, social support, or a no-treatment control condition. Before and after intervention and at 6-month followup, study participants were individuall

'No matter what time of day': The value of joining Facebook groups supporting women's self-management of gestational diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) affects a significant and growing proportion of pregnant women each year. The condition entails additional monitoring, self-management and healthcare use during pregnancy, and some women also join GDM support groups on Facebook. Little is known about the practices inside these groups, but examining them may elucidate support needs, women's experience of healthcare and improve overall outcomes. The aims of this study were to explore motivations for joining GDM Facebook groups and the perceived value and benefits of such spaces. DESIGN: A cross-se

Smoking intervention in the workplace: review and recommendations.

Growing interest has been expressed by the business community concerning intervention against smoking in the workplace. As most adult smokers are unlikely to have access to smokers' clinics or other treatment facilities outside the workplace, the workplace itself could be an ideal location for the provision of treatment programs. If the interest of the business community can be translated into action, large populations of smokers would become accessible to workplace treatment programs. Despite this possibility, the potential of the workplace for smoking intervention remains largely unexplored.

Facilitating aging in place: A qualitative study of practical problems preventing people with dementia from living at home.

Although the majority of people with dementia wish to age in place, they are particularly susceptible to nursing home admission. Nurses can play an important role in detecting practical problems people with dementia and their informal caregivers are facing and in advising them on various ways to manage these problems at home. Six focus group interviews (n = 43) with formal and informal caregivers and experts in the field of assistive technology were conducted to gain insight into the most important practical problems preventing people with dementia from living at home. Problems within three do

Development and Pilot Test of a Novel Digital Social Support Intervention for Reducing Hazardous Alcohol Use.

BACKGROUND: Community-based recovery organizations (e.g., mutual-help groups) can be a potent source of social support that facilitates addiction recovery. To increase awareness of and engagement with these organizations, we developed a digital intervention called Let's Do Addiction Recovery Together! (LDART) for individuals who want to reduce their hazardous alcohol use. LDART encourages daily goal-setting, provides motivational video messages from peers, and provides information on recovery organizations. METHODS: We conducted a single-arm study to evaluate feasibility, acceptability, and p

Peer Support in Online Women's Health Communities: Mixed Methods Formative Analysis of Reddit Discourse.

BACKGROUND: Stigmatized women's health issues, such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and endometriosis, are often marginalized or dismissed in traditional clinical settings. This drives individuals to seek peer support in anonymous online communities such as Reddit. While these digital platforms host critical discussions, they are often designed as static information repositories, failing to account for the complex emotional, temporal, and cultural dynamics that shape users' support needs. There is a disconnect between the lived experiences of users-particularly feelings of clinical dismiss

Peer Support for Caregivers of People Living with Posterior Cortical Atrophy in Melbourne, Australia: A Feasibility Study.

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a rare form of young-onset dementia that causes early visuospatial and visuoperceptual deficits. The symptom profile of Posterior Cortical Atrophy leads to very specific care needs for those affected, who often rely on informal caregivers (including friends and family). Rare dementia support groups can be useful for both patients and their caregivers to assist with knowledge sharing, psychoeducation, and the provision of psychosocial support. Despite this, few such support groups exist. The purpose of this study was to examine a PCA support group for caregiv

Qualitative analysis of a psychological supportive counseling group for burn survivors and families in Malawi.

OBJECTIVE: While psychological care, including supportive group therapy, is a mainstay of burn treatment in the developed world, few reports of support groups for burn survivors and their caregivers in the developing world exist. This study records the findings of a support group in Malawi and provides a qualitative analysis of thematic content discussed by burn survivors and caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We established a support group for burn survivors and caregivers from February-May 2012 in the burn unit at Kamuzu Central Hospital in Lilongwe, Malawi. Experiences of a peer group for people diagnosed with borderline personality disorder: A qualitative interview study.

There is a notable lack of literature evaluating peer support for people with a diagnosis of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Peer-led groups have been shown to positively impact outcomes related to empowerment, hope, and self-efficacy beliefs for consumers diagnosed with serious mental illness and may also be a helpful option for those experiencing personality disorder symptoms. We outline the coproduction of a peer group for people with a lived experience of BPD and a qualitative analysis of feedback post-group participation. Twenty-two consumers participated in post-group interviews a

AN OVERVIEW OF THE EFFICACY OF THE 12-STEP GROUP THERAPY FOR SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT.

This study was designed to determine if 12-Steps groups efficacy for substance abuse treatment significantly improve abstinence rates of heroin addicts in the short run and long run (1-year and 5-year period); and if abstinence rates are found to be lower for heroin addicts that have attended 12-Step groups at the 1-year mark, and if similar results would be expected at the 5-year mark. Secondary data from the Inter-University Consortium of Political and Social Research (ICPSR) was extracted and analyzed for the aforementioned hypothesis. Examining Social Support Conversations on Reddit During COVID-19 Using Computational Methods.

Public health crises like the COVID-19 pandemic have posed unprecedented challenges to both physical and mental health. To better understand related social support conversations on online support groups, and how the topics of these conversations are associated with producing conversation and with authors' mental health status, we analyzed 65,004 posts and comments on the subreddit r/COVID19_support using structural topic modeling. Among the 22 valid topics identified, those that attracted more user engagement addressed uncertainty about prospective situations, national and international news,

Parent experiences of the esophageal atresia journey during the early post-natal period: results from a support group perspective.

Surgically repaired esophageal atresia (EA) is associated with chronic esophageal and respiratory morbidity that require ongoing management. The care of chronically ill children can exert considerable stress on parents, thereby potentially affecting their mental well-being. In response to this, disease-specific support groups have emerged with the aim to bring together individuals facing similar challenges, facilitating the exchange of experiences within a nurturing environment, and providing essential emotional support. In the context of this international collaborative study, we investigated

Employment and Occupational Productivity Among Women Living With HIV: A Conceptual Framework.

Women living with HIV (WLWH) have lower employment rates and more difficulty finding and keeping employment compared with their counterparts without HIV. These disparities affect physical, psychological, and socioeconomic outcomes, and they may compound the disadvantages associated with living with HIV. Although historical literature has emphasized the impact of clinical factors on employment, current evidence suggests that socioeconomic and psychosocial factors associated with HIV should be included for a more comprehensive view. Based on this broader inclusion, a conceptual framework is pres
