Child maltreatment and psychopathology among institutionalized and incarcerated adolescents in Nigeria: A latent class analysis approach.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment (CM) is prevalent among residentially-placed or incarcerated adolescents and is a risk factor for behavioral health disorders. No study conducted in a low-income country has empirically compared the types of CM and adverse outcomes experienced by these high-risk adolescents. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to identify profiles of CM-and their association with behavioral health problems among at-risk adolescents in Nigeria. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: Participants comprised adolescents in juvenile detention facilities (N = 102) and adolescents in resident

The effect of childhood maltreatment on psychological well-being among public high school and preparatory school students, Northwest Ethiopia: using structural equation modeling.

BACKGROUND: Childhood Maltreatment (CM) refers to any form of abuse and neglect as such physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, and motional neglect of children below the age of 18 years. It is global public health problem with severe and enduring consequences. Although examining the consequences of CM on psychological well-being can offer valuable insights for the development of targeted interventions, there is a limited body of research both globally and in Ethiopia specifically addressing the impact of each distinct form of CM on psychological well-being. Therefore,

Mediation of DNA methylation (cg04622888 and cg05037505) in the association between childhood maltreatment and non-suicidal self-injury in early adolescents.

It is unclear whether DNA methylation underlies the association between childhood maltreatment (CM) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) in early adolescents. We aim to explore the mediation of specific DNA methylation sites in the associations of CM and its subtypes with NSSI, following investigation on the association between specific DNA methylation sites and NSSI. A case-control study was conducted to examine 155 adolescents aged 12-14 years who were identified to have engaged in NSSI and 201 controls. CM and its subtypes were evaluated by using the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire. The EPIC

Abuse, invalidation, and lack of early warmth show distinct relationships with self-criticism, self-compassion, and fear of self-compassion in personality disorder.

BACKGROUND: Cultivating self-compassion is increasingly recognized as a powerful method to regulate hyperactive threat processes such as shame and self-criticism, but fear of self-compassion (FSC) can inhibit this. These difficulties are underexplored in personality disorder (PD) despite their prevalence. Furthermore, little evidence exists regarding how these factors relate to adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and attachment. METHOD: Fifty-three participants with a diagnosis of PD completed measures including childhood abuse/neglect, invalidation, early warmth, self-compassion, shame, sel

A Longitudinal Examination of Online Expressive Writing Intervention Outcomes Comparing Hispanic Survivors of Childhood Trauma and Adult Trauma.

Childhood traumas such as childhood abuse and neglect are prevalent in Hispanic populations. They have long-term consequences including posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) in adulthood. Treatment options suitable for Hispanic survivors of childhood traumas and neglect are needed. Expressive writing (EW) can be a short, self-administered intervention and may address instrumental barriers (e.g. time, transportation) and stigma toward psychological disorders and interventions Hispanic trauma survivors may experience. Online EW has successfully reduced PTSS when targeting mixed traumas but has no

The Relationship between Adverse Family Experiences during Childhood and Self-rated Health Outcome in Adulthood.

Although there is increasing evidence of a link between adverse family experiences (AFEs) and long-term health outcomes, few studies have investigated the role of educational attainment in the relationship between AFEs and adult health. The data of this study comes from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Here, 15,359 samples were analyzed. Ordered logistic regression with interaction terms was used to explore the moderating effect of education on the relationship between AFEs in childhood and adult self-rated health. The self-rated health scores of people with childho

Early maladaptive schemas as mediators between childhood maltreatment and later psychological distress among Chinese college students.

The aim of the current study was to examine whether early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) mediate the association between different kinds of childhood maltreatment and later psychopathology and the effect of different kinds of childhood maltreatment on psychological distress in later life. A total of 1102 college students from two local universities participated in the study; their average age was 20.46 ± 1.13 years. The participants completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), the Early Maladaptive Schemas Scale (EMSs), the Zung Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), and the Zung Self-Rating A

Parenting in poor health: Examining associations between parental health, prescription drug use, and child maltreatment.

RATIONALE: Child maltreatment and problematic parenting are related to negative outcomes for children. Poor parental health could be a risk factor for problematic parenting through several mechanisms: 1) inadequate emotional regulation and coping; 2) impairment of parental capacity; and, 3) impairment of the parent-child relationship. OBJECTIVE: This study examines relationships between self-rated parental health, prescription drug use, and a broad array of negative parenting outcomes. METHODS: A sample of general population parents of children aged ten and younger was recruited from 30 mid-

Gender-specific association between childhood trauma and rheumatoid arthritis: a case-control study.

OBJECTIVE: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has been associated with a variety of emotional stressors, but findings remain inconclusive if RA is related to childhood trauma, which is known to have long-lasting negative consequences for physical health decades into adulthood. We investigated the association between childhood trauma and RA by comparing histories of child abuse and neglect between RA patients and adults from the general population in a cross-sectional case-control study. METHODS: 331 patients with definite RA and 662 gender- and age-matched adults from the general population were admin

Estimating the Heritability of Experiencing Child Maltreatment in an Extended Family Design.

Child-driven genetic factors can contribute to negative parenting and may increase the risk of being maltreated. Experiencing childhood maltreatment may be partly heritable, but results of twin studies are mixed. In the current study, we used a cross-sectional extended family design to estimate genetic and environmental effects on experiencing child maltreatment. The sample consisted of 395 individuals (225 women; Mage = 38.85 years, rangeage = 7-88 years) from 63 families with two or three participating generations. Participants were oversampled for experienced maltreatment. Self-reported exp

History of Childhood Maltreatment and College Academic Outcomes: Indirect Effects of Hot Execution Function.

College students who report a history of childhood maltreatment may be at risk for poor outcomes. In the current study, we conducted an exploratory analysis to examine potential models that statistically mediate associations between aspects of maltreatment and aspects of academic outcome, with a particular focus on executive functions (EF). Consistent with contemporary EF research, we distinguished between relatively "cool" EF tasks (i.e., performed in a context relatively free of emotional or motivational valence) and "hot" EF tasks that emphasize performance under more emotionally arousing c

[The German version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ): preliminary psychometric properties].

Given the relevance of child maltreatment for the development and treatment of many mental disorders, the objective of our study was the psychometric evaluation of the German version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ). In a sample of psychiatric patients (N=1 524) the established factor structure (i.e. sexual, physical and emotional abuse as well as physical and emotional neglect) was replicated by means of confirmatory factor analysis. The internal consistency of all scales (apart from physical neglect) was high (Cronbachs α ≥ 0.89). Correlations between the CTQ and self-report measu

Longitudinal Cross-Lagged Analysis Between Depressive Symptoms, Social Withdrawal, Self-Esteem, and School Adaptation in Multicultural Adolescents.

In Korea, as the number of multicultural families formed through the marriage of Korean men and foreign women from lower-income countries such as China, Southeast Asia, and Central Asia increases, the psychosocial adaptation of adolescents from these families is becoming increasingly important. This study examines the longitudinal and reciprocal relationships among depressive symptoms, social withdrawal, self-esteem, and school adaptation in multicultural adolescents in high schools. We applied an autoregressive cross-lagged model to a sample of 594 multicultural adolescents extracted from thr

The relationship between childhood trauma, psychotic symptoms, and cognitive schemas in patients with schizophrenia, their siblings, and healthy controls: results from the EU-GEI study.

BACKGROUND: The relationship between childhood trauma (CT) and psychotic symptoms in patients with schizophrenia (SCZ), and subthreshold psychotic experiences in non-clinical populations is well-established. However, little is known about the relationship between subtypes of trauma and specific symptoms in patients, their siblings, and controls. It is also not clear which variables mediate the relationship between trauma and psychotic symptoms. METHODS: Seven hundred and forty-two patients with SCZ, 718 of their unaffected siblings and 1039 controls from three EU-GEI sites were assessed for C

Integrated Neurorehabilitation Including EEG-Neurofeedback for Unilateral Spatial Neglect After Right Thalamo-Mesencephalic Intracerebral Hemorrhage: A Case Report.

Background/Objectives: Unilateral Spatial Neglect (USN) is a disabling attentional syndrome occurring after cortical or subcortical stroke, including thalamic lesions. EEG-based neurofeedback (EEG-NF) may support cortical self-regulation, but evidence in spatial neglect remains limited. This case report describes the clinical, neuropsychological, functional, and electrophysiological (quantitative EEG, qEEG) evolution of a patient with USN after a right thalamic hemorrhagic stroke who underwent multidisciplinary rehabilitation including EEG-NF. Methods: A 70-year-old patient underwent a 3-week

Self-Reported and Agency-Notified Child Abuse as Contributors to Suicidal Behaviour in a Population-Based Birth Cohort Study at 30-Year-Follow-Up.

This was a record-linkage analysis of a birth cohort to examine the association between self-reported self-harm in adulthood and childhood maltreatment (CM) as prospectively notified to authorities and self-reported on the Child Trauma Questionnaire. There were 2507 participants at 30-year follow-up with data on both CM and self-reported self-harm including an intent to die. Of the participants, 304 (12.1%) had self-harmed at some time in their lives while 150 (4.2%) had wanted to die. The prevalence of self- and agency-reported maltreatment was 513 (20.5%) and 143 (5.7%) respectively. On adju
