Canine visceral leishmaniasis in the Krenak indigenous community, Resplendor, Minas Gerais State, Brazil, 2007.

The authors conducted a cross-sectional study of the local canine population in the Krenak indigenous community to detect parasites of the genus Leishmania and identify the circulating species and the proportion of asymptomatic dogs, while investigating associations between canine infection and the dogs' sex, age, and hair length. A seroepidemiological survey was performed, including 63 dogs. All the animals underwent clinical examination to verify the presence of characteristic signs, and serum samples were taken for serological tests (ELISA, IIF). Infected dogs culled by the health service w

Management of a wild animal bite in a rabies enzootic area.

The British Armed Forces of the 21st century are trained and operate worldwide, often in places where rabies control is poor and prevalence may be high. Currently rabies is not a routine vaccination for all service personnel. Awareness of the risk of rabies, action to take post potential exposure, prompt access to clear management advice and reliable supplies of Rabies Immunoglobulin and Rabies Vaccination are critical. We describe the management of a recent case of animal bite in Kenya and discuss current recommendations.

A Review of the Evolution of Dairy Policies and Regulations in Rwanda and Its Implications on Inputs and Services Delivery.

The dairy sector in Rwanda plays a key role in improving nutrition and generating income mostly for rural households. Despite the Rwandan 1994 genocide that left around 80% of dairy cows decimated, the dairy sector has experienced significant growth in the past two decades through government, development organisations, and donor programs, and through the nascent vibrant public-private partnership. In this paper, we reviewed and documented the evolution of the dairy policies, programs, and regulations in Rwanda and how they have contributed to the development of the dairy sector. The policy cha

Occupational Animal Exposure Among Persons with Campylobacteriosis and Cryptosporidiosis - Nebraska, 2005-2015.

Campylobacter and Cryptosporidium are two common causes of gastroenteritis in the United States. National incidence rates measured for these pathogens in 2015 were 17.7 and 3.0 per 100,000 population, respectively; Nebraska was among the states with the highest incidence for both campylobacteriosis (26.6) and cryptosporidiosis (≥6.01) (1). Although campylobacteriosis and cryptosporidiosis are primarily transmitted via consumption of contaminated food or water, they can also be acquired through contact with live animals or animal products, including through occupational exposure (2). Physical activity and heart rate in PTSD inpatients: Moderation by custody of a service dog.

Posttraumatic stress disorder is associated with autonomic hyperarousal often shown to involve elevated resting heart rate and, simultaneously if somewhat paradoxically, reduced physical activity. Both are risk factors for cardiovascular disease and so may contribute to its elevated prevalence in persons with this diagnosis. Epidemiological studies have observed dog owners to exhibit lower rates of cardiovascular disease. Non-randomized between-group studies have found service dog companionship to be associated with increased physical activity and with lower resting heart rate. A challenge to

Sleep in the United States Military.

The military lifestyle often includes continuous operations whether in training or deployed environments. These stressful environments present unique challenges for service members attempting to achieve consolidated, restorative sleep. The significant mental and physical derangements caused by degraded metabolic, cardiovascular, skeletomuscular, and cognitive health often result from insufficient sleep and/or circadian misalignment. Insufficient sleep and resulting fatigue compromises personal safety, mission success, and even national security. In the long-term, chronic insufficient sleep and

Joint human and animal vaccination strategies to reach mobile pastoralists and their livestock in Africa: A scoping review.

Africa's pastoralist population exceeds 268 million and occupies over 40% of the continent's land. Mobile pastoralists connected to their livestock are underrepresented in data and face barriers to accessing fixed vaccination services. We aimed to identify and describe joint human-animal vaccination strategies to improve immunisation coverage among mobile pastoralists and their animals. We conducted a scoping review and followed Joanna Briggs Institute and PRISMA-ScR guidelines. We screened 2469 records from 12 databases. Five studies (2004-2016) from Chad, Nigeria, and Somalia met the inclusi

Modeling Lyme disease host animal habitat suitability, West Point, New York.

As the most frequently reported vector-borne disease among active component U.S. service members, with an incidence rate of 16 cases per 100,000 person-years in 2011, Lyme disease poses both a challenge to healthcare providers in the Military Health System and a threat to military readiness. Spread through the bite of an infected blacklegged tick, infection with the bacterial cause of Lyme disease can have lasting effects that may lead to medical discharge from the military. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is situated in a highly endemic area in New York State. To identify probable are

Cognitive performance and variability in dromedary camels: insights from a comparative psychometric approach.

Contemporary research in animal cognition has expanded our understanding of non-human intelligence, yet behavioural and cognitive traits in dromedary camels remain largely unexplored. This study pioneers the empirical assessment of cognitive performance and variability in dromedaries (Camelus dromedarius) using a comparative psychometric framework adapted from human and animal cognition protocols. A total of 130 Canarian dromedaries were evaluated across thirteen cognitive traits, with individual performance indices calculated through a mental age-based model. Results revealed substantial inte

Zoonotic disease risk and prevention practices among biologists and other wildlife workers--results from a national survey, US National Park Service, 2009.

In 2007, a National Park Service (NPS) biologist died from pneumonic plague after unprotected exposure to an infected mountain lion. This incident increased awareness of occupational zoonotic disease transmission and prompted an assessment of employees who handle wildlife. During April-June 2009, we conducted a national online survey of NPS biologists and other wildlife workers to assess in the preceding 12 mo: 1) potential work-related zoonotic disease exposures; 2) protective practices, including use of personal protective equipment (PPE); and 3) barriers and facilitators to PPE use. Summary

Brucellosis is a public health problem in southern Italy: Burden and epidemiological trend of human and animal disease.

BACKGROUND: Brucellosis is the most common global bacterial zoonotic disease. Italian annual 2015 report on animal brucellosis control that was submitted to the Integrated National Plan of the Italian Health Ministry showed that the Italian region with the highest prevalence and incidence of brucellosis was Sicily (3.3%). This study aims to demonstrate the burden of disease and the epidemiological trend of human and animal brucellosis in Messina, Sicily, from 1997 to 2016. METHODS: The analysis was conducted in the twenty-years 1997-2016. We examined the computerised and paper registers of th

[Perspective of peer helpers regarding their experience animating a self-treatment program for panic disorders].

OBJECTIVE: Support groups can help to reach individuals with anxiety disorders who are not or are only partly obtaining health services. The present study is based on a program that involves peer helpers as animators of a self-treatment group (Zéro-ATAQ). Their perspective has been documented in order to identify the aspects of the program which can be improved. METHODS: Eleven peer helpers led the 12 sessions of the program, which was dispensed in four regions of Quebec for 32 persons having panic disorders with agoraphobia. The perspectives of ten peer animators were documented based on a s

Performance of microbiological, serological, molecular, and modified seminal plasma methods in the diagnosis of Brucella abortus in semen and serum of bovine bulls.

Brucellosis remains as a major infectious disease of domestic animals and is considered a re-emerging zoonosis in several countries. B. abortus infections in bulls are related to reproductive tract infections, although infected animals show transient serological titers or nonreactor status. Thus, diagnosis of bovine brucellosis based exclusively on serological tests probably underestimates B. abortus infections in bulls. In this scenario, three hundred thirty-five serum samples from reproductively mature bovine bulls were subjected simultaneously to standard serodiagnosis using the rose Bengal

Validation of a quantitative and confirmatory method for residue analysis of aminoglycoside antibiotics in poultry, bovine, equine and swine kidney through liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

The use of aminoglycoside antibiotics in food animals is approved in Brazil. Accordingly, Brazilian food safety legislation sets maximum levels for these drugs in tissues from these animals in an effort to guarantee that food safety is not compromised. Aiming to monitor the levels of these drugs in tissues from food animals, the validation of a quantitative, confirmatory method for the detection of residues of 10 aminoglycosides antibiotics in poultry, swine, equine and bovine kidney, with extraction using a solid phase and detection and quantification by LC-MS/MS was performed.
