Radiotherapy (RT) efficacy in aggressive solid tumors is hindered by lactate-driven metabolic radioresistance and an immunosuppressive microenvironment. Here, we engineer a living biointerface (SHT) via in situ biomineralization of HfO2/TiO2 onto an electrogenic Shewanella oneidensis chassis to address this multifaceted challenge. This structural integration bridges the bacterial metabolism with interfacial radiocatalysis. The TiO2 shell acts as an efficient electron acceptor to accelerate bacterial extracellular electron transfer, driving rapid intratumoral lactate depletion, while the high-Z

Bacterial competition is a major factor influencing microbiota succession in fish. However, the competition mechanisms among dominant spoilage bacteria in grass carp remain to be systematically investigated. Therefore, this study aimed to elucidate the mutual competition relationships and mechanisms among five representative spoilage bacteria isolated from grass carp. To this end, we constructed synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) with these five strains and employed metatranscriptomics coupled with phenotypic verification to demonstrate their interactions at both transcriptional and phe

Antagonistic bacteria that suppress the growth of specific bacteria have attracted attention as an antibiotics-independent strategy for infectious disease control in aquaculture. Microfluidics-based water-in-oil droplets (microdroplets) enable high-throughput screening of antagonistic bacteria in the field of medicine or agriculture. However, the use of this screening system in aquaculture has not yet been reported. In particular, penaeid shrimp aquaculture, one of the largest sectors of global aquaculture, has a strong demand for alternative disease control strategies because vaccination is i

Vivianite is often found in reducing environments rich in iron and phosphorus from organic debris degradation or phosphorus mineral dissolution. The formation of vivianite is essential to the geochemical cycling of phosphorus and iron elements in natural environments. In this study, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were selected as the source of phosphorus. Microcosm experiments were conducted to test the evolution of mineralogy during the reduction of polyferric sulfate flocs (PFS) by Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 (S. oneidensis MR-1) at EPS concentrations of 0, 0.03, and 0.3 g/L. Iron is a micronutrient critical to fundamental biological processes including respiration and photosynthesis, and it can therefore impact primary and heterotrophic productivity. Yet in oxic environments, iron is highly insoluble, rendering it, in principle, unavailable as a nutrient for biological growth. Life has "solved" this problem via the invention of iron chelates, known as siderophores, that keep iron available for microbial productivity. In this work, we examined the impact of siderophore synthesis on the speciation, mobility, and bioavailability of iron from rock-forming silicate min

Trichloroethylene is a toxic and recalcitrant groundwater pollutant. Palladium nanoparticles bio-precipitated on Shewanella oneidensis were encapsulated in polyurethane, polyacrylamide, alginate, silica or coated on zeolites. The reactivity of these bio-Pd beads and zeolites was tested in batch experiments and trichloroethylene dechlorination followed first order reaction kinetics. The calculated k-values of the encapsulated catalysts were a factor of six lower compared to non-encapsulated bio-Pd. Bio-Pd, used as a catalyst, was able to dechlorinate 100 mgL(-1) trichloroethylene within a time

Microbial upcycling of heavy metal wastewater into catalysts offers a sustainable solution for antibiotic degradation, yet traditional synthesis is hindered by severe metal toxicity and complexation issues. To address these challenges, a stepwise biosynthesis strategy was developed using Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 to fabricate copper-manganese bimetallic sulfide (bio-CuMnSs) from heavy metal-laden wastewater. Unlike the one-step method, this strategy maintained high cell viability, enabling the efficient production of uniform nanoparticles. The bio-CuMnS (Cu/Mn molar ratio of 2:1) significantl

Electrochemically active bacteria (EAB) characterized by extracellular respiration is promising for bioregenerative life support systems and elemental cycling at extraterrestrial planetary bases. However, it remains unclear how microgravity modulates genes related to electricity generation and reshapes intracellular energy metabolism. In this study, the impact of simulated microgravity on EAB was systematically analyzed through electricity generation, gene enrichment, energy metabolism, and central carbon metabolic reprogramming. The results demonstrate that simulated microgravity increases th

Precise manipulation of interspecies electron transfer (IET) is critical for advancing microbial electrosynthesis (MES) toward efficient CO2 bioconversion. Here, defined synthetic consortia are constructed by pairing Shewanella oneidensis MR-1, a model bidirectional electroactive bacterium, with Clostridium aceticum (electroactive acetogen) or Acetobacterium woodii (nonelectroactive acetogen), mimicking functional guilds commonly observed in natural MES communities. Co-cultivation markedly boosts acetate production by up to 88%, achieving 1.16 ± 0.01 and 1.05 ± 0.01 g L-1, with carbon conversi

Ferrous iron (Fe(II)) produced by microbial Fe(III) reduction and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated from aerobic Fe(II) oxidation can mediate iodate (IO3-) reduction and iodide (I-) oxidation, respectively. Nevertheless, how Fe redox cycling under redox fluctuating conditions drives transformation of iodine species remain unclear. In this study, Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 wildtype (WT) and its mutant △dmsEFAB, which lost the ability to enzymatically reduce IO3-, were chosen to conduct ferrihydrite/goethite/nontronite culture experiments under consecutive cycles of anoxic reduction of Fe(

Fe(III) may be reasonably considered as one of the most important electron acceptors in petroleum reservoir ecosystems. The microbial mineralization of clay minerals, especially montmorillonite, is also of great significance to the exploration of petroleum and gas reservoirs. The bioreduction mechanisms of iron-poor minerals in petroleum reservoirs have been poorly investigated. This study investigated the bioreduction of montmorillonite by dissimilatory iron-reducing bacteria (DIRB) in petroleum reservoirs based on culture-independent and culture-dependent methods. Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a toxic and recalcitrant groundwater pollutant. An innovative technology using microbial produced Pd(0) nanoparticles for the remediation of TCE contaminated groundwater was developed. The nanoscale bio-Pd particles were precipitated on the biomass of Shewanella oneidensis and hydrogen gas, formate, or formic acid were used as hydrogen donors. Ethane turned out to be the only organic degradation product and no intermediate chlorinated reaction products were detected. Subsequently bio-Pd was implemented in a plate membrane reactor (MR) for the treatment of water conta

Carbonate alkalinity is one of the primary factors limiting saline-alkaline water aquaculture, and high alkalinity can lead to respiratory alkalosis, which is hazardous to fish health. Selenium (Se) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (L. plantarum) can be used for the biosynthesis of organic selenium (selenium-enriched Lactiplantibacillus plantarum: SL), which has low toxicity, high bioavailability, and the promotion of metabolism. Additionally, it can be used as a feed additive in aquaculture. In the present study, we established a model of chronic alkalinity stress in common carp and added SL

Sideroxydans species are important chemolithoautotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria in freshwater environments and play a role in biogeochemical cycling of multiple elements. Due to difficulties in laboratory cultivation and genetic intractability, the electron transport proteins required for the growth and survival of this organism remain understudied. In Sideroxydans lithotrophicus ES-1, it is proposed that the Mto pathway transfers electrons from extracellular Fe(II) oxidation across the periplasm to an inner membrane NapC/NirT family protein encoded by Slit_2495 to reduce the quinone pool.

Efficient interfacial electron transfer between electroactive microorganisms and electrodes underpins bio-electrochemical systems for energy, environmental, biosensors, and bioelectronic applications. Yet oxygen infiltration, unavoidable under practical conditions, and severely impairs performance. Here, we propose a strategy where plant-sourced antioxidants, such as fraxetin, with high thermodynamic stability are employed as electron shuttles. Electrochemical analysis and density functional theory revealed that fraxetin, unlike flavin mononucleotide, resists oxygen oxidation and sustains elec

This study explores the potential of geranium essential oil as a natural solution for combating marine biofouling, addressing the environmental concerns associated with commercial antifouling coatings. Compounds with bactericidal activities were identified by 13Carbon nuclear magnetic resonance (13C NMR). Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) revealed minimal impact on film thermal stability, maintaining suitability for antifouling applications. The addition of essential oil induced changes in the morphology of the film and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis indicated that oil

Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a multidrug-resistant (MDR) pathogen. It causes life-threatening diseases through quorum sensing (QS)-associated virulence. Thus, the attenuation of QS may be an effective strategy to combat the pathogen. In this study, Shewanella indica SU1 isolated from the marine environment showed QS inhibitory activity against biosensor strain Chromobacterium violaceum MTCC 2656. The lead compound was purified and tentatively identified as eicosyl heptafluorobutyrate (EPB). P. aeruginosa MCC 3457 was treated with EPB, and results revealed a reduced production of pyocyanin (79%),

The dissimilatory metal reducing bacterium (DMRB) Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 reduces ionic mercury (Hg[II]) to elemental mercury (Hg[0]) by an activity not related to the MerA mercuric reductase. In S. oneidensis, this activity is constitutive and effective at Hg(II) concentrations too low to induce mer operon functions. Reduction of Hg(II) by MR-1 required the presence of electron donors and electron acceptors. Reduction occurred with oxygen or fumarate, but had the highest rate when ferric oxyhydroxide was used as a terminal electron acceptor. Geobacter sulfurreducens PCA and Geobacter metal
