[Contribution to the study of Microphallidae travassos, 1920 (Trematoda). XLV. Description of Maritrema feliui n. sp., parasite of shrews (Mammals) in Spain].

The authors describe and illustrate the morphology of the adult stage of Maritrema feliui n. sp. (Trematoda Microphallidae) obtained from the intestine of the shrew Crocidura russula (Hermann, 1780), definitive host of the fluke present in the estuary of the river Llobregat (Catalonia, Spain). The larval stages are found in two hosts obtained from the area: 1) Mercuria confusa (Frauenfeld) [= Pseudamnicola similis (Draparnaud)] (Mollusca: Hydrobiidae), and 2) Gammarus aequicauda (Martynov) (Crustacea: Amphipoda). The adult stage is anatomically related to the Maritrema with a mean size of the

Variability and constraint of vertebral formulae and proportions in colugos, tree shrews, and rodents, with special reference to vertebral modification by aerodynamic adaptation.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study is to provide the first large data set on vertebral formulae and proportions, and examine their relationship with different locomotive modes in colugos (Dermoptera), tree shrews (Scandentia), and rodents (Rodentia), which have been considered less variable because they were thought to have a plesiomorphic number of 19 thoracolumbar vertebrae. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data included 33 colugos and 112 tree shrews, which are phylogenetically sister taxa, and 288 additional skeletons from 29 other mammalian species adapted to different locomotive modes,

Newly identified tree shrew cytochrome P450 2B6 (CYP2B6) and pig CYP2B6b are functional drug-metabolising enzymes.

Tree shrews have high phylogenetic affinity to humans and are used in various fields of biomedical research, especially hepatitis virus infection; however, cytochromes P450 (P450s or CYPs) have not been investigated in this species. In this study, tree shrew CYP2B6 and pig CYP2B6b were newly identified and had amino acid sequences highly identical (80% and 78%, respectively) to human CYP2B6, containing sequence motifs characteristic of P450s.Phylogenetic analysis revealed that novel tree shrew CYP2B6 was more closely related to known human CYP2B6 than dog, pig, or rat CYP2Bs are.Among the tissu

Survival of the less-fit: a least shrew (Mammalia, Soricidae, Cryptotis parvus) survives a separated leg fracture in the wild.

X-rays of the deformed femur of a least shrew (Cryptotis parvus) revealed an ossified callus enclosing a greatly displaced, spiral fracture. Based on models of fracture healing, this shrew lived for at least 28 days postfracture. Survival of major fractures in the wild may not be uncommon.

The distribution of T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and dendritic-like cells of the anal tonsil in the laboratory shrew, Suncus murinus.

We investigated the distribution of T lymphocytes, B lymphocytes, and S-100 protein-immunoreactive dendritic-like in the anal tonsil of the laboratory shrew, Suncus murinus. In adult animals, T lymphocytes were located mainly at the periphery of the anal tonsil, especially around small blood vessels. B lymphocytes were located in the central and subepithelial region of the anal tonsil, which includes primary lymphoid follicles, and in which there are small numbers of scattered T lymphocytes. B and T lymphocytes were distributed over 72.7 and 27.3% of the tonsillar area, respectively. However,

Chronic psychosocial stress in tree shrews: effect of the substance P (NK1 receptor) antagonist L-760735 and clomipramine on endocrine and behavioral parameters.

RATIONALE: Substance P and its preferred receptor, the neurokinin 1 receptor (NK(1)R), have been proposed as possible targets for new antidepressant therapies, although results of a recently completed phase III trial failed to demonstrate that the NK(1)R antagonist MK-869 is more effective than placebo in the treatment of depression. METHODS: In the present study, we compared the effects of the NK(1)R antagonist L-760735 with the tricyclic antidepressant clomipramine on endocrine and behavioral parameters in chronically stressed tree shrews. Animals were subjected to a 7-day period of psychos

Pharmacological Characterization of Vasomotor Responses in the Tree Shrew (Tupaia belangeri) Basilar Artery: A Promising Model for Human Cerebrovascular Research.

The tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri) is increasingly recognized as an important experimental model for studying human diseases due to its close phylogenetic relationship with humans. Because the basilar artery's response to endogenous vasoactive mediators varies among species, we investigated the effects of vasoactive substances on isolated tupaia basilar arteries to determine whether this species is suitable as a human model. 5-Hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) and histamine (His) induced contraction, while bradykinin (BK) and acetylcholine (ACh) produced concentration-dependent relaxation. Pharmacologic

A new genus and species of shrew-like mouse (Rodentia: Muridae) from a new center of endemism in eastern Mindanao, Philippines.

The Philippine archipelago hosts an exceptional diversity of murid rodents that have diversified following several independent colonization events. Here, we report the discovery of a new species of rodent from Mt. Kampalili on eastern Mindanao Island. Molecular and craniodental analyses reveal this species as a member of a Philippine "New Endemic" clade consisting of Tarsomys, Limnomys, and Rattus everetti (tribe Rattini). This new species of "shrew-mouse" is easily distinguished from its relatives in both craniodental and external characteristics including a long, narrow snout; small eyes and

Blood vascular architecture of the palatine tonsil in the musk shrew (Suncus murinus): scanning electron microscopic study of corrosion casts.

The musk shrew, Suncus murinus, is one of the primitive mammals and has a pair of palatine tonsils. In the present study, we investigated the blood microvascular architecture of the tonsil in this animal by scanning electron microscopy of corrosion casts. The paranodular arterioles entered the lymph nodule to form a coarse capillary plexus within the nodule. Some of the arterioles reached the dome region to give rise to a fine meshwork of dome subepithelial capillaries. This dome subepithelial capillary network did not show any hairpin or switch-back patterns, as seen in human and rabbit tonsi

Expression of Testis-specific Serine/Threonine Kinases during the Reproductive and Nonreproductive Seasons and Their Localization in Mature Spermatozoa of Tree Shrews (Tupaia belangeri).

Tree shrews display obvious reproductive cycles, and sexually mature male tree shrews produce little or no sperm with extremely low motility during the nonreproductive season; the mechanism underlying this phenomenon remains unknown. Because testis-specific serine/threonine kinases (TSSK) are specifically expressed in the testis and male germ cells of mammals, we hypothesized that they may have an important role in spermatogenesis or sperm function regulation in tree shrews. In addition, the expression, distribution, subcellular localization, and dynamic changes of TSSK in tree shrew sperm are

Human hepatitis B virus and hepatocellular carcinoma. II. Experimental induction of hepatocellular carcinoma in tree shrews exposed to hepatitis B virus and aflatoxin B1.

On the basis of the successful establishment of an animal model in tree shrews experimentally infected with human hepatitis B virus (HBV), a study on the hepatocarcinogenic effects of HBV and/or aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) was conducted. The results showed that the incidence of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) was significantly higher in the animals both infected with HBV and exposed to AFB1 (52.94%) than in those solely infected with HBV (11.11%) or exposed to AFB1 (12.50%). No HCC of precancerous lesions were found in the controls that were neither HBV-infected nor AFB-1 exposed. Precancerous lesions,

Infection of the Asian gray shrew Crocidura attenuata (Insectivora: Soricidae) with Sarcocystis attenuati n. sp. (Apicomplexa: Sarcocystidae) in China.

BACKGROUND: Data on the genus Sarcocystis in insectivores are limited. The Asian gray shrew Crocidura attenuata is one of the most common species of the insectivore family Soricidae in South Asia and Southeast Asia. To our knowledge, species of Sarcocystis have never been recorded previously in this host. METHODS: Tissues were obtained from 42 Asian gray shrews caught in 2017 and 2018 in China. Sarcocysts were observed using light microscopy (LM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). To describe the parasite life cycle, muscle tissues of the host infected with sarcocysts were force-fed

Central and peripheral emetic loci contribute to vomiting evoked by the Akt inhibitor MK-2206 in the least shrew model of emesis.

Akt (protein kinase B) signaling is frequently activated in diverse cancers. Akt inhibitors such as perifosine and MK-2206 have been evaluated as potential cancer chemotherapeutics. Although both drugs are generally well tolerated, among their most common side-effects vomiting is a major concern. Here we investigated whether these Akt inhibitors evoke emesis in the least shrew model of vomiting. Indeed, both perifosine and MK-2206 induced vomiting with maximal efficacies of 90% at 50 mg/kg (i.p.) and 100% at 10 mg/kg (i.p.), respectively. MK-2206 (10 mg/kg, i.p.) increased c-Fos immunoreactivi

Molecular identification and antiviral function of the guanylate-binding protein (GBP) genes in the Chinese tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinesis).

Following viral detection and interferons (IFNs) production, several hundreds of IFN-stimulated genes (ISGs) are subsequently induced to act as direct antiviral effectors or regulators of the IFN signaling. The guanylate-binding protein (GBP) family belongs to IFN-inducible GTPases defending the host against a diverse group of invading pathogens such as parasites, bacteria and viruses. The Chinese tree shrew (Tupaia belangeri chinese) has been increasingly used as an alternative experimental animal to primates in studying viral infectious diseases. Hitherto, the tree shrew GBP family has not b

Separation of emetic and anorexic responses of exendin-4, a GLP-1 receptor agonist in Suncus murinus (house musk shrew).

The use of glucagon-like peptide-1 (7-36) amide (GLP-1) receptor agonists for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus is commonly associated with nausea and vomiting. Therefore, the present studies investigated the potential of GLP-1 receptor ligands to modulate emesis and feeding in Suncus murinus. Exendin-4, a selective GLP-1 receptor agonist, was administered subcutaneously (1-30 nmol/kg) or intracerebroventricularly (0.03-3 nmol) after 12-h of fasting. In other studies, animals were pretreated with the GLP-1 receptor antagonist, exendin (9-39), or saline (5 μl) 15 min prior to exendin-4
