A Simple and Innovative Simulator Model for Sialendoscopy Basket Stone Retrieval Training.

We present a simple and innovative sialendoscopy basket stone retrieval (BSR) simulator model composed mainly of a 1.0-mL insulin syringe with detachable needle whose lumen mimics a dilated salivary duct. Dried Guava seeds are used to imitate small-sized floating sialoliths. The BSR simulator is evaluated by sialendoscopy trainees to ensure its realism and efficiency. Evaluating the Impact of Assessment Metrics for Simulated Central Venous Catheterization Training.

INTRODUCTION: Performance assessment and feedback are critical factors in successful medical simulation-based training. The Dynamic Haptic Robotic Trainer (DHRT) allows residents to practice ultrasound-guided needle insertions during simulated central venous catheterization (CVC) procedures while providing detailed feedback and assessment. A study was performed to examine the effectiveness of the DHRT in training the important skills of needle tip tracking and aspiration and how these skills impact procedural complications in simulated CVC. METHODS: The DHRT data were collected for 163 reside

Hyperventilation and Hypoxia Hangover During Normobaric Hypoxia Training in Hawk Simulator.

Introduction: In military aviation during high-altitude operations, an oxygen or cabin pressure emergency can impair brain function and performance. There are variations in individuals' physiological responses to low partial pressure of oxygen and hypoxia symptoms can vary from one exposure to another. The aim of this study was to evaluate how normobaric hypoxia (NH) affects pilots' minute ventilation and 10 min afterwards on Instrument Landing System (ILS) flight performance in Hawk simulator during a tactical flight sortie. Methods: Fifteen volunteer fighter pilots from the Finnish Air Force

A New Method for Combined Hyperventilation and Hypoxia Training in a Tactical Fighter Simulator.

INTRODUCTION: Physiological episodes are an issue in military aviation. Some non-pressure-related in-flight symptoms are proved to be due to hyperventilation rather than hypoxia. The aim of this study was to validate a new training method provoking hyperventilation during normobaric hypoxia (NH) training in an F/A-18 Hornet simulator.METHODS: In a double-blind setting, 26 fighter pilots from the Finnish Air Force performed 2 setups in a WTSAT simulator in randomized order with full flight gear. Without the pilot's knowledge, 6% O₂ in nitrogen or 6% O₂ + 4% CO₂ in nitrogen was turned on. Ventil

FUN AND GAMES: DESIGNING A GAMIFIED CENTRAL VENOUS CATHETERIZATION TRAINING SIMULATOR.

Gamification, or adding elements of games to training systems, has the potential to increase learner engagement and information retention. However, the use of gamification has yet to be explored in Central Venous Catheterization (CVC) trainers which teach a commonly performed medical procedure with high incidence rates. In order to combat these errors, a Dynamic Haptic Robotic Trainer (DHRT) was developed, which focuses on vessel identification and access. A DHRT+ system is currently under development that focuses on whole procedure training (e.g. sterilization and catheter insertion), includi

Cognitive Training Can Reduce Civilian Casualties in a Simulated Shooting Environment.

Shooting a firearm involves a complex series of cognitive abilities. For example, locating an item or a person of interest requires visual search, and firing the weapon (or withholding a trigger squeeze) involves response execution (or inhibition). The present study used a simulated shooting environment to establish a relationship between a particular cognitive ability and a critical shooting error-response inhibition and firing on civilians, respectively. Individual-difference measures demonstrated, perhaps counterintuitively, that simulated civilian casualties were not related to motor impul

PsT1: A Low-Cost Optical Simulator for Psychomotor Skills Training in Neuroendoscopy.

BACKGROUND: Well-developed psychomotor skills are important for competence in minimally invasive surgery. Neuroendoscopy is no exception, and adaptation to different visual perspectives and careful handling of the surgical instruments are mandatory. Few training systems, however, focus on developing psychomotor skills for neuroendoscopy. Here, we introduce a new training system called PsT1 that provides visual feedback via the use of simple optics that emulate the endoscope at 0° and 30°. Time and error metrics are generated automatically with integrated software to ensure objective assessment

A training simulator for sentinel node biopsy in breast cancer: a new standard.

BACKGROUND: Sentinel node biopsy is becoming the staging investigation of choice for early breast cancer. Optimal identification of the sentinel node requires the utilization of a radionuclide in combination with blue dye. Gamma probe guided surgery is a skill that is currently unfamiliar to many surgeons. Appropriate training within the surgical skills laboratory could play a major role in the widespread implementation of this technique, but no suitable model currently exists for this purpose. AIM: To develop a realistic phantom for the teaching and practice of the core new skills required o

Robotic versus laparoscopic simulation training for laparoscopic skill acquisition in novices: a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Increasing technical demands and reduced operative exposure have reinforced the importance of simulation-based training in minimally invasive surgery. Robotic simulation offers an additional training modality. Yet, evidence for transfer of skills from robotic training to laparoscopic performance remains inconsistent. METHODS: We performed a single-center, randomized controlled trial including medical students enrolled at University of Geneva with no prior laparoscopic experience. Participants were randomized to either dry-lab laparoscopic training (LT) or robotic training (RT) on
