Ontogeny of the Appendicular Skeleton in Melanosuchus niger (Crocodylia: Alligatoridae).

The objective of the present study was to analyze chondrogenesis and the ossification pattern of the limbs of Melanosuchus niger in order to contribute with possible discussions on homology and the fusion pattern of autopodial elements and phylogeny. In the Reserva Extrativista do Lago Cuniã, Rondônia, Brazil, six nests were marked and two eggs removed from each nest at 24-hour intervals until hatching. Embryos were cleared using KOH; bone tissue was stained with alizarin red S and cartilage with Alcian blue. Routine staining with HE was also performed. In the pectoral girdle, the scapula show

Effect of bisphosphonates on the rapidly growing male murine skeleton.

Bisphosphonates are effective for preventing and treating skeletal disorders associated with hyperresorption. Their safety and efficacy has been studied in adults where the growth plate is fused and there is no longitudinal bone growth and little appositional growth. Although bisphosphonate use in the pediatric population was pioneered for compassionate use in the treatment of osteogenesis imperfecta, they are being increasingly used for the treatment and prevention of bone loss in children at risk of hyperresorptive bone loss. However, the effect of these agents on the growing skeleton in dis

MicroRNAs in the skeleton: cell-restricted or potent intercellular communicators?

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play a fundamental role in cell proliferation, differentiation and apoptosis and have been associated with many diseases and physiological states. Within the skeleton, both the bone forming cells, osteoblasts, and the bone degrading cells, osteoclasts, are mostly being stimulated by miRNAs through downregulation of inhibitors of bone cell differentiation. Besides miRNAs affecting master genes of bone cell differentiation and function in a cell-restricted manner, evidence is gathering that miRNAs are excreted into the local environment but also into the circulation, implicati

A keyhole-shaped sternal defect in an ancient human skeleton.

We observed a sternal foramen contiguous with a small sternal cleft in a human skeleton coming from North-Eastern Italy and dating back to between the sixteenth and seventeenth century AD. Both of these types of anomalies result from a defective midline fusion of the developing sternum. Sternal foramen is a relatively common bony defect that usually comes to light as an incidental finding. Sternal cleft is a rarer morphological anomaly that can have a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations and outcomes, depending on the extent of the bony defect as well as on the presence and severity of oth

Mimix hydroxyapatite cement use in the reconstruction of the craniofacial skeleton.

Reconstruction of the craniofacial skeleton has undergone a significant evolution during the past century. Initially, the use of autogenous bone grafts from various sites was the criterion standard. However, owing to donor site morbidity and lack of sufficient bone for large defects, surgeons have relied on various bone substitutes. Hydroxyapatite (HA) has served as an alternative to autogenous grafts, but questions regarding biocompatibility, risk of infection, and slow set times have hampered its acceptance. This article serves as a review of a single surgeon's experience using HA in the cra

Cannabinoids and the skeleton: from marijuana to reversal of bone loss.

The active component of marijuana, Delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol, activates the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors, thus mimicking the action of endogenous cannabinoids. CB1 is predominantly neuronal and mediates the cannabinoid psychotropic effects. CB2 is predominantly expressed in peripheral tissues, mainly in pathological conditions. So far the main endocannabinoids, anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol, have been found in bone at 'brain' levels. The CB1 receptor is present mainly in skeletal sympathetic nerve terminals, thus regulating the adrenergic tonic restrain of bone formation. CB2

The facial skeleton of the chimpanzee-human last common ancestor.

This review uses the current morphological evidence to evaluate the facial morphology of the hypothetical last common ancestor (LCA) of the chimpanzee/bonobo (panin) and human (hominin) lineages. Some of the problems involved in reconstructing ancestral morphologies so close to the formation of a lineage are discussed. These include the prevalence of homoplasy and poor phylogenetic resolution due to a lack of defining derived features. Consequently the list of hypothetical features expected in the face of the LCA is very limited beyond its hypothesized similarity to extant Pan. It is not possi

The processing of skeletonized human remains found in Berlin, Germany.

During World War II, and particularly the Battle of Berlin, many thousands of civilians and soldiers from a variety of countries were killed. Given the nature of the intense aerial and ground bombardments bodies were often fragmented and buried beneath rubble resulting in many individuals, who were presumed to have been killed, not being identified. Skeletal remains are continually being uncovered in Berlin, particularly with accelerated building developments following German re-unification. A retrospective study was undertaken of records over a 10-year period from 1997 to 2006 to demonstrate

Is osteoporosis generalized or localized to central skeleton in ankylosing spondylitis?

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis at the lumbar spine and at the femur is a well-established complication in ankylosing spondylitis (AS), but the exact mechanism and the distribution of osteoporosis are not known absolutely. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the osteoporosis is generalized or localized to central skeleton and to examine the relation between bone mineral density (BMD) and disease activity and radiologic progression in patients with AS. METHODS: In this study, 26 patients with AS and 33 healthy controls matched for age and sex were recruited to the study. Hip and forearm BMD were measure

Regionalization of axial skeleton in the lungfish Neoceratodus forsteri (Dipnoi).

Differentiation of the axial skeleton into distinct regions, once thought to be characteristic of the Tetrapoda, also occurs in the actinopterygian Danio rerio. In these taxa, the boundary between the cervical-thoracic regions correlates with Hoxc6 expression and morphological features such as position of the pectoral fin and associated nerves, and the absence of ribs. In the lungfish Neoceratodus, a member of the extant sister taxon to the Tetrapoda, the first vertebral element to chondrify is situated well posterior to the skull, developing from somites 6 and 7 (6/7) and associated with an e

Prevalence of anomalies in the appendicular skeleton of a fossorial rodent population.

The prevalence of macroscopic bone anomalies in the appendicular skeleton of wild rodents and, particularly, fossorial species is not well known. We examined 8,257 bones corresponding to 564 collection specimens (249 males and 315 females) of a fossorial form of water vole (Arvicola terrestris monticola). Animals were obtained monthly from July 1983 to December 1984 in the Aran Valley (Pyrenees). Most macroscopic anomalies were healed fractures or exostoses. The prevalence of anomalies was not significantly different between males and females but was clearly higher in adults than in juveniles

Skeletonization does not influence internal thoracic artery innervation.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to compare the effect of surgical harvesting on internal thoracic artery innervation and to assess the eventual presence of denervation supersensitivity in skeletonized grafts. METHODS: Nineteen patients who underwent primary isolated coronary artery bypass grafting were randomly assigned to receive a skeletonized (n = 9) or pedicled (n = 10) internal thoracic artery graft. Immunohistochemical nerve localization using anti-S-100 protein, anti-160-kd neurofilament polypeptide and anti-tyrosine hydroxylase antibodies was performed on distal specimens of arter

Impact of growth hormone status on body composition and the skeleton.

Severe growth hormone (GH) deficiency (GHD) induces a well-defined clinical entity encompassing, amongst the most reported features, abnormalities of body composition, in particular increased fat mass, especially truncal, and reduced lean body mass. The results from virtually all treatment studies are in agreement that GH replacement improves the body composition profile of GHD patients by increasing lean body mass and reducing fat mass. More recently, the observations have been extended to adults with partial GHD, defined by a peak GH response to insulin-induced hypoglycaemia of 3-7 microg/l.

Ultrasound of the skeleton: review of its clinical applications and pitfalls.

Quantitative ultrasound (QUS) is receiving considerable attention in the assessment of osteoporosis because of its ease of use, lack of radiation exposure, region of interest, and relatively low costs. These features have made the technique appealing for screening adult and pediatric patients. This article discusses some of the clinical applications, limitations, and strengths of QUS.

Options for tissue engineering to address challenges of the aging skeleton.

There will be more than 52 million Americans over the age of 65 by the year 2020 (U.S. Census Bureau). Regenerating form and function to bone defects in an elderly, osteoporotic population of this magnitude will be a daunting challenge. Tissue engineering options must be considered to answer this challenge. Options can include gene transfer technology, stem cell therapy, and recombinant signaling molecules. An additional component will be a carrier that localizes, protects, predictably releases cues and cells, as well as establishes an environment for restoring osseous form and function. The p

Possible case of spondylo-epiphyseal dysplasia in a medieval skeleton.

Multiple anomalies of vertebral and long bone growth were observed in the incomplete skeleton of an adult male from a collection of 693 medieval skeletons excavated at Abingdon, Oxfordshire. The skeleton consists of a fragmented skull, right scapula and humerus, left humerus, radius, ulna and partial hand, vertebrae from C1 to T11, and fragments of the ribs and sternum. The bones were examined, measured, and radiographed. The humeri are abnormally short and thick, with exaggerated muscle attachments. Both shoulder joints show extensive osteoarthritic destruction. Some vertebrae show slight fla

A brimmed valved conduit in repair of fibrous skeleton abscess.

Aortomitral common annular involvement, which is not uncommon in infective endocarditis, necessitates deliberate surgical procedures. To repair fibrous skeleton abscess accompanied with annuloaortic ectasia, we used a brimmed valved conduit. Tension-free reconstruction of the aortic root and aortomitral common annulus was easily performed with this method.

The short- and long-term effects of methotrexate on the rat skeleton.

Both clinical and laboratory studies have shown that the chemotherapy drug, Methotrexate (MTX), has adverse short-term effects on bone. There are no studies that demonstrate the long-term response of bone to MTX. The purpose of this study was to determine the short- and long-term effects of MTX on bone volume, turnover, mineralization and strength. Three-month-old Sprague-Dawley rats were randomly assigned to a control (CTL) or MTX group and were given either daily MTX or saline injections for two separate 5-day courses (5 on/9 off/5 on). Fluorochrome compounds were injected prior to killing t

[A schematic representation of the thoracic skeleton for the analysis of multiple fractures].

A scheme of the thoracic skeleton (a superior projection) is suggested for practical forensic medical evaluation. The scheme presents concentrically arranged costal arches connected to the image of the breast bone and the thoracic portion of the spine, with the ordinal numbers of the ribs, vertebrae, and anatomic lines. Special marks indicate rib fractures and other associated signs (repeated injuries, bleedings, whether the injury was inflicted in life or was postmortem, etc.). After the scheme is filled in, one may analyze a three-dimensional image of the injuries to determine the site and d

Some remarks on the axial skeleton in Protopterus (Pisces, Dipnoi).

Based on a comparative morphological study of the axial skeleton in a broader range of "primitive bony fishes" a reevaluation of some characteristic traits of the vertebral column in the African lungfish has been done. The axial skeleton of living dipnoans has to be regarded as reduced from a more complex phylogenetic state and may be neotenic in some respect. The formation of perichordal bony autocentra could be confirmed, at least in one specimen. The well-known invasion of mesenchymal cells into the fibrous sheet of the notochord is interpreted as a rudimentary chordacentric "vertebralizati
