Asperger syndrome and "non-verbal learning problems" in a longitudinal perspective: neuropsychological and social adaptive outcome in early adult life.

Co-existence of Asperger syndrome (AS) and non-verbal learning disability (NLD) has been proposed based on the observation that people with AS tend to have significantly higher verbal than performance IQ (VIQ > PIQ by ≥ 15 points), one of the core features of NLD. In the present study we examined neuropsychological and social adaptive profiles with "non-verbal learning problems" associated with NLD in a group of individuals with AS followed from childhood into early adult life. The group was divided into three subgroups: (i) persistent NLD (P-NLD), i.e. NLD (VIQ > PIQ) both in childhood and ea

Impaired social interactions and motor learning skills in tuberous sclerosis complex model mice expressing a dominant/negative form of tuberin.

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic disorder characterized by the development of hamartomas in multiple organs. Neurological manifestation includes cortical dysplasia, epilepsy, and cognitive deficits such as mental impairment and autism. We measured the impact of TSC2-GAP mutations on cognitive processes and behavior in, ΔRG transgenic mice that express a dominant/negative TSC2 that binds to TSC1, but has mutations affecting its GAP domain and its rabaptin-5 binding motif, resulting in inactivation of the TSC1/2 complex. We performed a behavioral characterization of the ΔRG transgen

Evaluating Predictors of Participation in Telephone-Based Social-Connectedness Interventions for Older Adults: A Dual Machine-Learning and Regression Approach.

Social isolation is a well-documented contributor to poor mental and physical health, and interventions promoting social connectedness have been associated with various health benefits. This study examined predictors of participation in a telephone-based social connectedness intervention for socially isolated older adults. Data were obtained from a social-connectedness intervention that paired college students with Houston-area, community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and older and enrolled in Medicare Advantage plans. We combined machine learning and regression techniques to identify signific

Deviant Cyber-Sexual Activities in Young Adults: Exploring Prevalence and Predictions Using In-Person Sexual Activities and Social Learning Theory.

Technology has shifted some human interactions to the virtual world. For many young adults, sexual encounters now occur through virtual means, as social media, picture exchanges, sexually explicit Web sites, and video chatting have become popular alternative outlets for these activities to occur. This study used the self-report responses of 812 undergraduate students (282 men and 530 women), collected from an online survey. In addition to using 10 personal demographic control variables, this study used five sexual activity/relationship characteristics (number of sexual partners, relationship s

A hybrid learning approach to better classify exhaled breath's infrared spectra: A noninvasive optical diagnosis for socially significant diseases.

Early diagnosis is crucial for effective treatment of socially significant diseases, such as type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), pneumonia, and asthma. This study employs a diagnostic method based on infrared laser spectroscopy of human exhaled breath. The experimental setup comprises a quantum cascade laser, which emits in a pulsed mode with a peak power of up to 150 mW in the spectral range of 5.3-12.8 μm (780-1890 cm-1), and a Herriott multipass gas cell with a specific optical path length of 76 m. Using this setup, spectra of exhaled breath in the mid-infrared range were obtained from 165 vol

Parental Socialization of Academic Failure and Adolescent School Burnout: The Mediating Role of Failure Mindset and Moderating Role of Learning Orientations.

School burnout is an important developmental concern during adolescence, yet less is known about the role of parent socialization, particularly in response to adolescent academic failure, in the development of school burnout over time. More specifically, limited research has examined how different forms of parental failure socialization contribute to adolescents' failure-related mindsets and how adolescents' own learning motivations may condition these associations. Using three-wave longitudinal data from 806 Chinese parent-adolescent dyads (Adolescents: Mage = 13.92 years, SD = 0.66; 53% fema

Processing reliant on granule cells is essential for motor learning but dispensable for social preference and numerous other cerebellar-dependent behaviors.

Mossy fiber inputs are transformed into cerebellar Purkinje cell (PC) outputs by granule cell (GC)-dependent processing. Cerebellar dysfunction leads to motor, learning, emotional, and social deficits that are usually attributed to altered PC firing arising from impaired processing of mossy fiber inputs, even though PCs also fire independently of GCs. To isolate their contributions to cerebellum-dependent behaviors, we either disrupt GC signaling while leaving PC firing intact, or disrupt PC signaling to eliminate the influence of PCs. Experiments were performed in mice of both sexes. We find

Lived Experiences of Learning to Use a Long Cane: The Importance of Integrating Perceptual, Existential, and Social Dimensions for Active Cane Use.

How do people who are blind or visually impaired experience learning to use a long cane? This question is of paramount importance for planning and delivering rehabilitation programs and orientation and mobility (O&M) training. Until now, research into learning to use a long cane has focused primarily on technical and professional aspects, paying little attention to the lived experience of the learning activities that are offered in the field of O&M. This extensive qualitative study adopts a lifeworld phenomenological approach and sets out to examine the pedagogical processes within rehabilitat

Social Homeostasis and Psychoactive Drugs: What Can We Learn From Opioid and Amphetamine Drug Challenge Studies in Humans?

Social disequilibrium, or disrupted social homeostasis, underlies many behavioral disorders, including problematic drug use. One way to study the relationship between drug use and social homeostasis is to determine whether single doses of psychoactive drugs relieve some of the discomfort of social isolation and promote social connection. In this narrative review, we discuss challenges and opportunities in studying the relationship between psychoactive drugs and social homeostasis. Using the examples of opioids and amphetamines, we discuss the evidence that drugs alleviate dysphoria related to

Using passive sensor data to probe associations of social structure with changes in personality: A synthesis of network analysis and machine learning.

Social network analysis (SNA) is an increasingly popular and effective tool for modeling psychological phenomena. Through application to the personality literature, social networks, in conjunction with passive, non-invasive sensing technologies, have begun to offer powerful insight into personality state variability. Resultant constructions of social networks can be utilized alongside machine learning-based frameworks to uniquely model personality states. Accordingly, this work leverages data from a previously published study to combine passively collected wearable sensor information on face-t
