Confirmatory Factor Analysis and Construct Validity of the Internalized Sex Work Stigma Scale among a Cohort of Cisgender Female Sex Workers in Baltimore, Maryland, United States.

Internalized sex work stigma among cisgender female sex workers (FSW) is produced within contexts of social marginalization and associated with a range of ill-effects, including psychological distress, and lower rates of healthcare-seeking. This study seeks to uncover latent domains of the new Internalized Sex Work Stigma Scale (ISWSS) using data from 367 FSW in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. The sample was 56% white with high substance use (82% smoked crack cocaine, 58% injected any drug). The average ISWSS score was 34.8 (s.d. = 5.8, possible range: 12-48) and internal consistency was high (0.82)

Building Emergency Response Capacity: Multi-Career-Stage Social Workers' Engagement with Homeless Sector during the First Two Waves of COVID-19 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

The dramatic increase of global extreme events (e.g., natural, technological, and willful hazards) propels social workers to be equipped with emergency response capacity, supporting affected individuals, families, and communities to prepare, respond, and recover from disasters. Although social workers have historically been engaged in emergency response, social work curriculum and professional training remain slow to adapt, jeopardizing their capacity to support the vulnerable and marginalized populations, who have always been disproportionately affected by extreme events. In response to this

Quality of life is associated with vaccine reluctance via mental health and fear of covid-19: an exploratory investigation on a Palestinian sample.

Quality of life (QoL) has been studied as an antecedent of good mental health in contexts characterized by extreme poverty and acute conflict. The covid-19 crisis exacerbated the risks of health-related consequences in such contexts. Vaccination campaigns have been started worldwide to contain the virus outbreak with high rates of hesitancy and refusal. Our exploratory study sheds light on the relationship between QoL and vaccine reluctance via mental health and fear of covid-19 in a Palestinian population affected by military occupation or socioeconomic marginalization. HIV and Hepatitis C Among People Who Inject Drugs in Memphis, Tennessee: an Intersectional Risk Environment Analysis of the Social Determinants of Health.

BACKGROUND: The Southern US is confronting bourgeoning HIV and hepatitis C virus (HCV) epidemics among people who inject drugs (PWID), yet little is known about shared and unique risk factors across the region. We applied an intersectional risk environment framework to understand infectious disease outcomes for sub-groups of PWID that experience multiple axes of social marginalization related to racial and ethnic identity and social and economic vulnerability. METHODS: HIV and HCV prevalence was estimated from the first iteration of the CDC's National HIV Behavioral Surveillance respondent dr

Two Systems, One Population:: Achieving Equity in Mental Healthcare for Criminal Justice and Marginalized Populations.

The mental health system is often not readily accessible, culturally responsive, or a reliable source of effective interventions for society's most vulnerable populations. Modern-era studies estimate the number of persons diagnosed with serious mental illness in correctional facilities is more than 3 times the amount in hospitals. Understanding mass incarceration and the criminalization of mental illness is imperative to address mental health inequities. This article examines the interplay of mental health and criminal justice inequities, the historical context for the prevailing extant approa

Navigating Digital Geographies and Trauma Contexts: Conceptions of Online Communities and Experiences Among LGBTQ+ People During COVID-19.

The coronavirus pandemic shaped challenges for marginalized groups. Specifically, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and/or queer (LGBTQ+) people experienced community-building constraints, notably in predominantly rural regions. People are also navigating digital geographies, or online social environments, in novel ways to develop virtual communities in the face of prejudice, discrimination, and potential trauma. Through a minority coping approach, the present study explored LGBTQ+ people's experiences navigating the dynamics of digital geographies during the pandemic while residing in soci

Do Medicare Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Patients' Self-care and Mobility Outcomes Vary by Dual Eligibility Status, Race and Ethnicity, Rural Residence, Socioeconomic Status, and Living Alone?

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study is to examine whether inpatient rehabilitation facility patients' risk-adjusted functional outcomes varied with the following five social drivers of health: Medicare-Medicaid dual eligibility status, race and ethnicity, rural residence, socioeconomic status, and living alone. DESIGN: This cohort study examined unadjusted and adjusted mobility and self-care change scores during inpatient rehabilitation facility stays for 428,710 Medicare patients with and without social drivers of health. Regression models isolated the mean marginal effect of each of the five so

High yield from repeated testing for tuberculosis among high-risk citizens in Denmark.

BACKGROUND: Screening for TB (tuberculosis) among socially marginalized citizens has been implemented in many urban areas in countries with a low incidence of TB, including Denmark. This study aims to describe the findings of the screening programs for TB and latent tuberculosis (LTBI) used in the western part of Denmark in the period 2014-2019. METHODS: Data was collected retrospectively on test results from interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA), spot sputum tests and chest X-rays performed as part of TB and LTBI screening among 1024 socially marginalized citizens in urban areas of western

Exploration of Experiences and Perpetration of Identity-Based Bullying Among Adolescents by Race/Ethnicity and Other Marginalized Identities.

IMPORTANCE: Race-based discrimination represents an ongoing public health crisis in the US, manifested by wide-ranging disparities in youth health, mental health, and violence exposure. However, studies of racial discrimination often neglect experiences of identity-based bullying (IBB) stemming from other marginalized identities, such as gender identity and sexual orientation. OBJECTIVE: To examine associations between experiences of IBB based on race/ethnicity/national origin and other social identities and youth health, mental health, and violence outcomes. Caring for women globally: psychometric testing of two instruments translated into five languages for use in cardiovascular recovery.

Among women, cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality worldwide. After experiencing an acute cardiovascular event, a woman's physical health, the prevalence of morbidities, likelihood of being treated with coronary artery bypass graft surgery, likelihood for referral for cardiac rehabilitation are less favourable than men. The social support resources of marginality and religiousness are associated with physical and mental health outcomes following cardiovascular crises. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability and validity of the translated versions (Japanese, Ukrainian, T

Attitudes and sterotypes of supporting fields towards the persons with disabilities.

The aim of this research was to establish the attitudes, the views and reactions of the helping fields (which include social workers and medical nurses) and those who aren't the part of that cathegory, towards the mentally ill people. One hundred and twenty persons questioned have taken part in this research where in the group of supporting fields consisted of social workers and medical nurses (N = 40). The questionnaire was used in examining the attitudes of those questioned persons, the questionnaire that was used in Jokić-Begić's research (2005) and it turned out to be a really good one in

Equity and Resilience in Higher Education: An Examination of Environmental Injustices Affecting College Students from Marginalized Populations Amid Climate Crises.

As climate crises become more severe, higher education institutions face unprecedented challenges in protecting and supporting their students. This conceptual paper explores the intersection of equity and resilience in higher education, emphasizing how structural inequities increase climate-related vulnerabilities among marginalized student groups, especially low-income, first-generation, and BIPOC students. Using the Social Ecological Model and the Whole Community Approach, this paper suggests that climate resilience in higher education must go beyond traditional emergency management to inclu

The influence of social deprivation on length of hospitalisation.

The implementation of activity-based payment system named T2A-tarification à l'activité-in 2004 profoundly modified the financing of French hospitals. Presently applied to activities concerning medicine, surgery and obstetrics, the pricing for these activities was developed using the National Costs Study. The considerable differences observed between costs in the private sector and those in the public sector are in part justified, by the latter, by caring for patients with social deprivation. The goal of this study is to measure the influence of social deprivation on the length of hospitalisat

The Social Lives of Infectious Diseases: Why Culture Matters to COVID-19.

Over the course of the year 2020, the global scientific community dedicated considerable effort to understanding COVID-19. In this review, we discuss some of the findings accumulated between the onset of the pandemic and the end of 2020, and argue that although COVID-19 is clearly a biological disease tied to a specific virus, the culture-mind relation at the heart of cultural psychology is nonetheless essential to understanding the pandemic. Striking differences have been observed in terms of relative mortality, transmission rates, behavioral responses, official policies, compliance with auth

Social, economic, and physical side effects impact PrEP uptake and persistence among transgender women in Peru.

INTRODUCTION: Oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) for HIV-1 infection is over 99% effective in protecting against HIV acquisition when used consistently and appropriately. However, PrEP uptake and persistent use remains suboptimal, with a substantial gap in utilization among key populations who could most benefit from PrEP. In Latin America specifically, there is poor understanding of barriers to PrEP uptake and persistence among transgender (trans) women. METHODS: In April-May 2018, we conducted qualitative interviews lasting 25-45 min as part of an end-of-project evaluation of TransPrEP, a

Dropout, Autonomy and Reintegration in Spain: A Study of the Life of Young Women on Temporary Release.

UNLABELLED: This study analyses the psycho-educational and social paths of women prisoners after the time they drop out of school as minors, based on different variables related to autonomy and their preparedness to face temporary release. METHODS: Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyse a national sample of 310 women prisoners (30.1% of the population) in 31 prisons through a mixed-mode questionnaire and interview. We analysed the significant association of variables related to dropout and obtained a log-linear model that relates dropout to recidivism and Roma culture. Work

Rethinking respectability politics.

Respectability politics-that is, the process by which privileged members of marginalized groups comply with dominant social norms to advance their group's condition-is the object of a growing body of literature in the fields of race and ethnic studies, social movements, and critical theory. Yet this body of literature remains theoretically unintegrated. This article offers a clarification of the concept by specifying who can resort to this type of politics and by characterizing respectability politics as an inherently ambivalent political strategy, one that stands at the crossroads of forms of

An Intersectional Examination of How Class, Marital Status, and Age Shape Discrimination Among Black Women Who Are Postpartum.

INTRODUCTION: Intersectionality posits that multiple social categories (eg, race, gender, class) interact to create systems in which people experience discrimination differently. Among Black women, limited work has explored intersections beyond race, pregnancy status, and gender. This study compares experiences of racism and discrimination by multidimensional social category, inclusive of socioeconomic status (SES), marital status, and age, among Black women who are postpartum. METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional survey data from 197 self-identified Black women aged 18 years or older with a

Examining the association of social risk with heart failure readmission in the Veterans Health Administration.

BACKGROUND: Previous research has found that social risk factors are associated with an increased risk of 30-day readmission. We aimed to assess the association of 5 social risk factors (living alone, lack of social support, marginal housing, substance abuse, and low income) with 30-day Heart Failure (HF) hospital readmissions within the Veterans Health Affairs (VA) and the impact of their inclusion on hospital readmission model performance. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study using chart review and VA and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) administrative data fro

Youth sociopolitical development: A conceptual framework by racial and gender minoritized youth organizers.

Youth sociopolitical development (SPD) is a powerful protective and promotive factor for marginalized adolescents' social, emotional, physical, and academic well-being. Despite having unique insight and experiential knowledge about SPD processes, youth have been excluded from conceptual framework and model development. As part of a Youth Participatory Action Research project, 11 adolescents (ages 14-19) and one adult ask "How do adolescent community organizers with varying social and political experiences conceptualize youth SPD?" We used a multiple case study design, with a grounded theory an
