Exploring Public Perceptives on Palliative and Hospice Care in Social Media: Topic Modeling and Multi-Class Sentiment Analysis.

Palliative care ensures patients' dignity and quality of life while supporting families during serious illness. However, barriers such as inadequate awareness hinder access to these services. This study analyzed 9,147 perspectives about palliative and hospice care posted on Naver Knowledge iN, a popular online platform in South Korea, using contextualized topic modeling and multi-class sentiment analysis (SA). Nine major themes were identified. SA showed that "sadness" was the most common emotion, followed by "neutral" and "anxiety." Notably, negative emotions were closely tied to "emotional a

Emotion socialization within adolescent friendships: Considering the role of friends' emotion regulation, perceptions of friends, and expectations of support.

Friends are influential relationships during adolescence (Laursen & Veenstra, 2021), but little research has considered the role of close friends on the development of adolescents' emotion regulation (ER). The current study considered the roles of contagion of ER between friends, friends' modeling of ER (as perceived by the adolescent), and friends' direct feedback for negative emotions on adolescents' ER over a 2-year period. Participants were 202 adolescents (Mage = 12.66, 53% girls, 77% White, 18% Black, largely middle class) who participated with a same-gender close friend (101 dyads). Ado

The Impact of AI-Based Real-Time Gesture Generation and Immersion on the Perception of Others and Interaction Quality in Social XR.

This study explores how people interact in dyadic social eXtended Reality (XR), focusing on two main factors: the animation type of a conversation partner's avatar and how immersed the user feels in the virtual environment. Specifically, we investigate how 1) idle behavior, 2) AI-generated gestures, and 3) motion-captured movements from a confederate (a controlled partner in the study) influence the quality of conversation and how that partner is perceived. We examined these effects in both symmetric interactions (where both participants use VR headsets and controllers) and asymmetric interact

Perceptions and sentiments associated with HPV vaccine uptake among Indian Reddit users: a qualitative social media analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer is mainly caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually transmitted infection. An effective prevention method includes early screening and vaccination. HPV vaccine uptake is low in India, despite the approval of various vaccines. It has been observed that multiple factors affect the uptake of the vaccine. Social media platforms give space to the users to vocalize their views better. Therefore, this study aims to assess the perceptions and sentiments associated with HPV vaccine uptake among Indian Reddit users. METHODOLOGY: This qualitative study analyzed t

Qualitative exploration of determinants of active mobility and social participation in Urban neighborhoods: individual perceptions over objective factors?

BACKGROUND: Urban neighborhood environments play an important role in facilitating or hindering residents to engage in active mobility and social participation. However, while there is much quantitative research, in-depth knowledge that contextualizes residents' subjective perceptions of barriers and facilitators of active mobility and social participation is still insufficient. Therefore, a qualitative approach was used to collect subjectively perceived barriers and facilitators of active mobility and social participation of residents from different neighborhoods with objectively determined h

Telemedicine perceptions and experiences of socially vulnerable households during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Early in the COVID-19 pandemic, efforts to decrease risk of viral transmission triggered an abrupt shift from ambulatory health care delivery toward telemedicine. In this study, we explore the perceptions and experiences of telemedicine among socially vulnerable households and suggest strategies to increase equity in telemedicine access. METHODS: Conducted between August 2020 and February 2021, this exploratory qualitative study involved in-depth interviews with members of socially vulnerable households needing health care. Participants were recruited from a food bank and primary

Medical students' perceptions of their preparedness to care for LGBT patients in Taiwan: Is medical education keeping up with social progress?

INTRODUCTION: Integrating training on health equity of sexual and gender minorities (SGM) in medical education has been challenging globally despite emphasis on the need for medical students to develop competence to provide adequate care for diverse patient groups. This study elicits Taiwanese medical students' perceptions of their values and preparedness to care for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, or Transgender (LGBT) patients using a qualitative approach that considers broader societal changes, and more focused topics such as the provision of relevant training in medical education. METHODS: Eighty

Perceptions of adolescent pregnancy in the rural context and the Colombian armed conflict: a qualitative approach based on social determination of health.

BACKGROUND: Adolescent pregnancy in rural areas is a persistent health problem that has still not properly been understood. Studies with qualitative perspectives that address this phenomenon as a complex social process, which involves the recognition of the voices of the actors involved and the analysis of the specific context in which it takes place, are limited. OBJECTIVE: This research explored the perceptions of young people and other social actors (municipalities of Palmira and El Cerrito in Colombia) of the social forces and dimensions of the social determination of adolescent pregnancy

"I Like and Prefer to Work Alone": Social Anxiety, Academic Self-Efficacy, and Students' Perceptions of Active Learning.

Although active learning improves student outcomes in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs, it may provoke anxiety in some students. We examined whether two psychological variables, social anxiety (psychological distress relating to the fear of negative evaluation by others) and academic self-efficacy (confidence in one's ability to overcome academic challenges), interact with student perceptions of evidence-based instructional practices (EBIPs) and associate with their final grades in a STEM-related course. Blame Attributions Against Heterosexual Male Victims of Sexual Coercion: Effects of Gender, Social Influence, and Perceptions of Distress.

If heterosexual male victims had been more active in the #MeToo movement, how might they have been judged? Although the #MeToo movement has been regarded as an historic milestone for women who were victimized by men in positions of power, participation in the movement by male victims has been noticeably absent. Research indicates that victims may avoid disclosure if they anticipate negative social reactions, and male victims may attract greater levels of victim blaming than female victims, particularly if their perpetrator was female. The current study investigated attributions of victim blame

Post-event processing in social anxiety disorder: Examining the mediating roles of positive metacognitive beliefs and perceptions of performance.

BACKGROUND: Post-event processing (PEP) is defined as repetitive negative thinking following anxiety provoking social events. PEP is thought to maintain anxiety symptoms in Social Anxiety Disorder (SAD) but little is known about the specific factors that contribute to the maintenance of PEP. AIMS: The current study investigated how perceptions of performance and positive metacognitive beliefs might contribute to the persistence of PEP. METHOD: Participants with SAD (n = 24) as well as anxious (n = 24) and healthy (n = 25) control participants completed a standardized social performance task

"In their perception we are addicts": social vulnerabilities and sources of support for men released from drug treatment centers in Vietnam.

BACKGROUND: Amid the global transition to treat opioid addiction as an illness, many people who inject drugs (PWID) face heterogeneous legal environments that include both punitive and harm reduction measures. In Vietnam, many PWID, who have a high burden of HIV, are sent to drug treatment centers, or "06 centers", for compulsory detoxification, vocational training, and labor for up to four years. This study investigates the challenges and facilitators of reentry into community and family life among men who are released from "06 centers" and provides insights and recommendations for developing

Women's perceptions and social barriers determine compliance to cervical screening: results from a population based study in India.

BACKGROUND: Success of cervical screening initiatives depends on high participation of the target population, which in turn is determined by the women's perceptions, health orientation and other socio-cultural issues. The present study identifies the immediate social and cultural barriers that prevent women to attend cervical screening facilities. METHODS: Women non-compliant to a community-based cervical screening program were identified. From them 500 were randomly selected for interview using a structured questionnaire that was designed on the basis of feedbacks received from several focus

Health and social care workers perceptions of and experiences with virtual peer support: a qualitative study applying the Levesque Framework.

BACKGROUND: During the initial years of the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a rapid growth in virtual peer support interventions for health and social care workers. While these were often positively evaluated initially, there has been little research on their ongoing utility in the post-COVID response context, characterized by healthcare worker shortages and rising healthcare demands. This paper applies the Levesque Framework on access to healthcare to explore health and social care workers perspectives and experiences of virtual peer support services. METHODS: Nine online focus groups were held

Understanding the Intersection Between Racial Segregation, Social Isolation and Safety Perceptions on Health for an Economically Disadvantaged Urban Community.

Safety concerns continue to be challenging amid racially segregated communities of urban concentrated disadvantage. Although contributing factors to crime in such neighborhoods have been described, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how social isolation and perceptions of safety impact community health. This qualitative study explored how minoritized residents (N = 23) from an urban community of economic disadvantage perceived the influence of environmental and residential conditions on their health. Use of the grounded theory method produced conceptual insights into the process of how saf
