Protecting Urban Health and Safety: Balancing Care and Harm in the Era of Mass Incarceration.

This paper explores theoretical, spatial, and mediatized pathways through which policing poses harms to the health of marginalized communities in the urban USA, including analysis of two recent and widely publicized incidents of officer-involved killings in Ferguson, Missouri and Staten Island, New York. We examine the influence of the "broken windows" model in both policing and public health, revealing alternate institutional strategies for responding to urban disorder in the interests of the health and safety of the city. Drawing on ecosocial theory and medical anthropology, we consider the

[Strategies for genetic counseling and examination of families with hereditary tumor diseases].

Although everybody is at some risk of developing cancer, individuals whose families show certain characteristics might be at high risk. The existence of families with hereditary cancers have been known for a long time. Meanwhile several genes for these dispositions have been identified, which gives high-risk individuals the opportunity to choose presymptomatic testing. This leads to a new group of "patients", the healthy gene carriers. Genetic counselling is a process which includes verification of diagnosis, pedigree analysis, individual risk assessment, explanation of complex medical and gen

The effects of inclusion on academic achievement, socioemotional development and wellbeing of children with special educational needs.

BACKGROUND: Considering the rapid global movement towards inclusion for students with special educational needs (SEN), there is a surprising lack of pedagogical or didactic theories regarding the ways in which inclusive education may affect students with SEN. Group composition within the educational setting may play a role in determining the academic achievement, socio-emotional development, and wellbeing of students with SEN. Proponents of inclusion propose that segregated educational placement causes stigmatisation and social isolation which may have detrimental effects on the self-concept a

Development of a prediction model of postpartum hospital use using an equity-focused approach.

BACKGROUND: Racial inequities in maternal morbidity and mortality persist into the postpartum period, leading to a higher rate of postpartum hospital use among Black and Hispanic people. Delivery hospitalizations provide an opportunity to screen and identify people at high risk to prevent adverse postpartum outcomes. Current models do not adequately incorporate social and structural determinants of health, and some include race, which may result in biased risk stratification. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to develop a risk prediction model of postpartum hospital use while incorporating social a

Have all races experienced reductions in complication rates following total hip arthroplasty? A NSQIP analysis between 2011 and 2019.

INTRODUCTION: Despite numerous articles in the orthopedic literature evaluating racial and ethnic disparities, inequalities in total joint arthroplasty outcomes remain. While the National Surgical Quality Improvement (NSQIP) database has been previously utilized to highlight these disparities, no previous analysis has evaluated how the rate of various perioperative complications has changed over recent years when segregating by patient race. Specifically, we evaluated if all races have experienced decreases in (1) medical complications, (2) wound complications, (3) venous thromboembolism (VTE)

A Community-Engaged Ethnographic Investigation into Public Transit Among Older Adults Experiencing Homelessness.

Nearly 50% of single homeless adults are over the age of 50, and adults aged 50 years and older are the fastest growing subpopulation of the homeless in the U.S. This subpopulation has unique mobility needs and barriers to transportation. We used rapid ethnographic assessments to explore the practices, needs, perceptions, and values of unhoused older adults in relation to their efforts to access and navigate health and social services via public transit. We conducted 23 observations of 12 participants as they navigated public transit to meet their travel needs. Our data consist of 65 h of obse

Is the New Heroin Epidemic Really New? Racializing Heroin.

Heroin abuse as an outcome of the prior use of painkillers increased rapidly over the past decade. This "new epidemic" is unique because the new heroin users are primarily young White Americans in rural areas of virtually every state. This commentary argues that the painkiller-to-heroin transition could not be the only cause of heroin use on such a scale and that the new and old heroin epidemics are linked. The social marketing that so successfully drove the old heroin epidemic has innovated and expanded due to the use of cell-phones, text messaging and the "dark web" which requires a Tor brow

The Cry of the Child and its Relationship to Hearing Loss in Parental Guardians and Health Care Providers.

In this study the authors investigate the sound pressure levels produced by crying children and discuss the possible adverse effects that direct exposure may impose on a tending guardian or healthcare professional. Sound intensity levels from various pediatric patients (N = 26) were measured under two segregate conditions, one imitating the exposure of an examining physician and the other resembling that of parental guardians. Interestingly, all of the recorded sound levels fell between 99-120 dB(A) of sound pressure; children presenting the greatest risk for intense cries with potentially har

A large Calabrian kindred segregating frontotemporal dementia.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) displays significant neuropathological and genetic heterogeneity among and within affected families. An early diagnosis is often difficult because cognitive symptoms are manifest only at a late stage of the disease. We have been studying a large pedigree segregating frontotemporal dementia (FTD) to which belong 34 identified affected persons, 11 of whom were personally examined. The kindred has been genealogically reconstructed; all FTD patients have been linked to the same ancestors who lived in the early 18(th) century (11 generations before the present one). Au

Exome Sequencing Identified Molecular Determinants of Retinal Dystrophies in Nine Consanguineous Pakistani Families.

Inherited retinal dystrophies (IRDs) are a heterogeneous group of degenerative disorders of the retina. Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) is a common type of IRD that causes night blindness and loss of peripheral vision and may progress to blindness. Mutations in more than 300 genes have been associated with syndromic and non-syndromic IRDs. Recessive forms are more frequent in populations where endogamy is a social preference, such as Pakistan. The aim of this study was to identify molecular determinants of IRDs with the common presentation of night blindness in consanguineous Pakistani families. Thi

Cohen syndrome: Can early-onset recurrent infections and hypotonia provide early diagnosis and intervention for intellectual disability?

INTRODUCTION: Cohen syndrome is a rare disease associated with neurodevelopmental disorders, especially intellectual disability (ID), neutropenia and recurrent infections are consistently reported in cases. Neutropenia is an important part of the syndrome, as well as ID. Homozygous variants in the VPS13B gene, located on chromosome 8q22 and containing 62 exons, have been found to cause Cohen syndrome. Cohen syndrome is commonly diagnosed when dysmorphological findings and developmental delay become more apparent. However, the identification of some findings with increasing age has caused the d

Is urban regeneration associated with antidepressants or sedative medication users: a registry-based natural experiment.

BACKGROUND: Area deprivation is associated with adverse mental health outcomes. In Denmark, urban regeneration is being used to dissolve concentrated socio-economic area deprivation and ethnic segregation. However, evidence on how urban regeneration affects mental health of residents is ambiguous partly due to methodological challenges. This study investigates if urban regeneration affects users of antidepressant and sedative medication among residents in an exposed and control social housing area in Denmark. METHODS: Using a longitudinal quasi-experimental design we measured users of antidep

Neighborhood Deprivation and Privilege: an Examination of Racialized-Economic Segregation and Preterm Birth, Florida 2019.

The Black-White disparity in preterm birth persists and is not fully explained by individual-level social, behavioral, or clinical risk factors. Consequently, there is increasing emphasis on understanding the role of structural and area-level factors. Racialized-economic segregation measured as the index of concentration at the extremes (ICE) simultaneously captures extremes of deprivation and privilege. Our objective was to examine associations between preterm birth (PTB) and the index of concentration at the extremes (ICE). In this cross-sectional study, we analyzed 193,957 Florida birth rec

Gender differences in the effects of job insecurity on psychological distress in Japanese workers: a population-based panel study.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine effects of persistence or change in job insecurity on psychological distress (PD) among Japanese community dwellers. METHODS: The sample comprised 889 men and 762 women aged 25-50 years who were employed and completed both wave 1 (2010) and wave 2 (2012) surveys of the Japanese Study on Stratification, Health, Income, and Neighborhood (J-SHINE). Job insecurity, a perception of threat of job loss, was self-reported in both waves to define persistence and change of the status. Logistic regression analysis was performed to compare PD (K6 score ≥ 5) at wave 2

Disparities in Antiemetic Prophylaxis Care Processes Predicted by Patient Neighborhood: Retrospective Cohort and Geospatial Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Social determinants of health continue to drive persistent disparities in perioperative care. Our team has previously demonstrated racial and socioeconomic disparities in perioperative processes, notably in the administration of antiemetic prophylaxis, in several large perioperative registries. Given how neighborhoods are socially segregated in the United States, we examined geospatial clustering of perioperative antiemetic disparities. OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to determine whether disparities in perioperative antiemetic prophylaxis exhibit geographic clustering based on neighbo

Gender differences in the effects from working conditions on mental health: a 4-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: The overall aim was to examine how working conditions in 1993 influenced the occurrence of poor mental health in 1997 among women and men from the general population. Also, the relative importance of other living conditions in relation to poor mental health in 1997 was examined. METHODS: A sample from the general Swedish population (originally examined in 1969) was followed up in 1993 and 1997. Data from these follow-ups were analysed, and both bivariate and multivariate analyses of associations between occupational and non-occupational conditions in 1993 and poor mental health in

Brain Structural Covariance Network in Asperger Syndrome Differs From Those in Autism Spectrum Disorder and Healthy Controls.

INTRODUCTION: Autism is a heterogeneous neurodevelopmental disorder associated with social, cognitive and behavioral impairments. These impairments are often reported along with alteration of the brain structure such as abnormal changes in the grey matter (GM) density. However, it is not yet clear whether these changes could be used to differentiate various subtypes of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). METHOD: We compared the regional changes of GM density in ASD, Asperger's Syndrome (AS) individuals and a group of healthy controls (HC). In addition to regional changes itself, the amount of GM

Resting-state theta band connectivity and graph analysis in generalized social anxiety disorder.

BACKGROUND: Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) resting-state studies show generalized social anxiety disorder (gSAD) is associated with disturbances in networks involved in emotion regulation, emotion processing, and perceptual functions, suggesting a network framework is integral to elucidating the pathophysiology of gSAD. However, fMRI does not measure the fast dynamic interconnections of functional networks. Therefore, we examined whole-brain functional connectomics with electroencephalogram (EEG) during resting-state. METHODS: Resting-state EEG data was recorded for 32 patients
