A Ground Support Biobarrier (GSB) for recontamination prevention.

Planetary Protection organizations at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the European Space Agency (ESA), and other space agencies around the world are charged with protecting icy moons and Mars Special Regions, areas that carry an increased potential for life, from Earth biological contamination. During the spacecraft assembly process subsystems undergo functional testing, a task that verifies critical components can survive from launch through the duration of the mission. Despite efforts to keep spacecraft clean during these ground testing operations, as well as during

Terrestrial stress analogs for spaceflight associated immune system dysregulation.

Recent data indicates that dysregulation of the immune system occurs and persists during spaceflight. Impairment of immunity, especially in conjunction with elevated radiation exposure and limited clinical care, may increase certain health risks during exploration-class deep space missions (i.e. to an asteroid or Mars). Research must thoroughly characterize immune dysregulation in astronauts to enable development of a monitoring strategy and validate any necessary countermeasures. Although the International Space Station affords an excellent platform for on-orbit research, access may be constr

Boundary cap neural crest stem cells exhibit remarkable resilience to environmental stressors associated with International Space Station mission.

Boundary cap neural crest stem cells (BCs) previously demonstrated resilience during short-term microgravity exposure. In this study, BCs were sent to the International Space Station aboard Axiom Mission 3. Owing to launch regulations and weather delays, cells remained outside controlled culture conditions longer than anticipated, exceeding expected survival limits. Three BC populations were included: naive BCs (NBC), once-flown BCs (V15), and twice-flown BCs (V1415), cultured as neurospheres or within 3D-printed scaffolds. Corresponding ground controls were maintained under matched conditions

Consequences of contamination of the spacecraft environment: immunologic consequences.

Long-term space voyages pose numerous known and unknown health hazards, to the human immune system. Well-studied clinical examples of secondary immunodeficiencies created on Earth, lead one to predict that the conditions of prolonged space flight would weaken the human immune responses that normally hold infection and cancer in check. From evidence gathered from humans flown for prolonged periods in space and from human models of space flight studied on Earth it is reasonable to suspect that space travelers to the planet Mars would experience a weakening of immunity. Subtle defects of immune c

[The pharmacological regulation of physiological functions in space medicine].

There are considered the physiological systems of the body which are the most sensitive to the action of weightlessness and are subject to pharmacological correction at different stages of a space flight. Particular emphasis is given to the development and practical use of the cardiovascular drugs, the agents for prevention of movement disease and also the agents influencing the metabolic processes and mineral saturation of the bony tissue. The possibility of using the drugs intended for the application during space flights and in medical practice is emphasized.

The space mission MIR'97: operational aspects.

BACKGROUND: A German astronaut visited the MIR space station between 10 February and 2 March 1997. Together with his Russian colleagues, he conducted a series of scientific investigations before, during and after his stay aboard the MIR station. Research performed during this flight was part of a global space life sciences programme and focused on metabolic homeostasis, fluid balance, calcium homeostasis and cardiovascular regulatory mechanisms. The main goal of the scientific experiments was to use this mission as a milestone to establish international networks of scientific collaboration usi

Orthostatic hypotension and the role of changes in venous capacitance.

We suggest a mechanism by which blood volume changes might explain the hypotension that, after space flight, often accompanies the return to normal gravity. Upon entering microgravity, peripheral veins may collapse and, because of volume redistribution, raise the pressure in the central venous compartment. After some time in space, homeostatic mechanisms may cause volume excretion and reduce the pressure in the central venous compartment to normal values. Upon return to normal gravity, peripheral veins may re-expand and distribute a reduced blood volume into an enlarged space, thus lowering pr

Impact of space environment on stability of medicines: Challenges and prospects.

To upkeep health of astronauts in a unique, isolated, and extreme environment of space is the primary goal for a successful space mission, hence, safe and efficacious medications are essential for the wellness of astronauts. Space medication has been challenged with problems related to efficacy. Along with altered physiology, one of the possible reasons could be instability of space medications in the presence of harsh spaceflight environmental conditions. Altered physical and chemical stability can result in reduced potency which can result in reduced efficacy. Right now, medicines from the I

Centrifugation as a countermeasure during actual and simulated microgravity: a review.

This paper summarizes what has been learned from studies of the effects of artificial gravity generated by centrifugation in actual and simulated weightless conditions. The experience of artificial gravity during actual space flight in animals and humans are discussed. Studies using intermittent centrifugation during bed rest and water immersion, as a way to maintain orthostatic tolerance and exercise capacity, are reviewed; their results indicate that intermittent centrifugation is a potential countermeasure for maintaining the integrity of these physiological functions in extended space miss

Feeling free, feeling 0-g!

Following the great success of the Student Parabolic Flight Campaigns that it organised in 1994 and 1995, ESA decided to make them an annual event for students from the Agency's Member States. An initiative of ESA's Education Office, the campaigns give talented students a unique opportunity to experience weightlessness whilst performing their own scientific experiments, and hopefully encourage them to consider pursuing a career in space. The fifth Student Parabolic Flight Campaign (SPFC) took place from Bordeaux-Merignac Airport in southwest France in the first weeks of September 2002, with mo

[Mechanism of development of space motion sickness].

Astronauts and scientists are scheduled to stay aboard the International Space Station (ISS) for three-month periods, and various problems relating to the human ability to live in space for such long periods of time, as well as medical problems, are being studied. For the crews that have operated and worked on the US space shuttle, the longest time spent in the gravity-free (accurately speaking, microgravity) environment of space has been about two weeks. Even such short periods have generated reports of various physical changes and symptoms caused by the absence of gravity. Particularly strik

Free fall: a partial unique motion environment.

Conditions leading to the elicitation of motion sickness have been divided into two main categories: partial motion environments, in which head movements are required to elicit motion sickness, and complete motion environments, in which independent movements of the head are not required for the production of symptoms. It is postulated that, according to this categorization, free fall constitutes a partial motion environment. In support of this hypothesis evidence is reviewed from Skylab missions, experiments in parabolic flight, and ground-based studies.

Possible Mechanisms of Axonal Transport Disturbances in Mouse Spinal Motoneurons Induced by Hypogravity.

The data obtained by transcriptome analysis of lumbar spinal cord segments, sciatic nerve, and the respiratory diaphragm of the mice performed after a space flight on board Bion-M1 biosatellite were processed by bioinformatic methods aimed at elucidation of the regularities in hypogravity-induced transcriptome changes in various compartments of motor neurons. The study revealed abnormalities of axonal transport in spinal motor neurons provoked by weightlessness. These data agree with the results of electron microscopy examination of the spinal cord in experimental animals. In space group mice

Effects of weightlessness in man.

The program for the Apollo 16 flight was designed to include both safeguards against and investigations of the physiological problems arising from increase in the period of manned space flight. Precautions included the provision of a controlled diet with high potassium content, carefully controlled work loads and work-rest cycles and an emergency cardiology consultation service, and investigations were made to enable pre-flight-post-flight comparisons of metabolic, cardiovascular and central nervous system data. Results of these investigations indicate that adjustment to weightlessness can be

Response of the mouse sublingual gland to spaceflight.

The ultrastructure and immunohistochemistry of secretory proteins of sublingual glands were studied in mice flown on the US space shuttles Discovery [Space Transportation System (STS)-131] and Atlantis (STS-135). No differences in mucous acinar or serous demilune cell structure were observed between sublingual glands of ground (control) and flight mice. In contrast, previous studies showed autophagy and apoptosis of parotid serous acinar cells in flight mice. The expression of parotid secretory protein (PSP) in sublingual demilune cells of STS-131 flight mice was significantly increased compar

Experimental and numerical investigation on micro-motion characteristics of lightweight spacecraft.

Accurate prediction of micro-motion characteristics is essential to the success of space mission operations. In this paper, the lightweight spacecraft is selected as the research object. Firstly, the micro-motion characteristic test device is designed to carry out the micro-motion experiment, and the micro-motion characteristic of the test device is numerically simulated to verify the accuracy of the model compared with test data. On this basis, the angular velocity interferences of different values and different directions are simulated, and it is verified that the transversal initial interfe

Personalization and Fortification of In-Space Manufactured Emulsified Beverages for Long-Term Space Travel.

The current trend of individualized food items (nutrient content and flavor) can be particularly valuable to support people's health and well-being in isolated environments where access to fresh foods and diverse nutrition is difficult. At the same time, bioactive compounds and micronutrients can be employed to countermeasure any health hazards characteristic for the respective environment. Outer space is well-known as a hazardous environment due to microgravity, space radiation, and extreme living situation, whereas food monotony has led to insufficient caloric intake in the past. Deep space exploration: Sleep and circadian rhythms in heart and brain function.

During deep space exploration, astronauts are exposed to external environmental stressors, including microgravity and ionizing radiation. They also experience internal physiological disruptions, such as circadian rhythm dysregulation and sleep disturbance. Within this complex stress environment, functional alterations may occur in multiple organ systems, particularly the heart and brain. This review examines alterations in heart and brain function during spaceflight and explores their potential relationships with microgravity, circadian rhythm dysregulation, and sleep disturbance. Evidence fro
