Cyclone: open-source package for simulation and analysis of finite dynamical systems.

MOTIVATION: While there are software packages that analyze Boolean, ternary, or other multi-state models, none compute the complete state space of function-based models over any finite set. Results: We propose Cyclone, a simple light-weight software package which simulates the complete state space for a finite dynamical system over any finite set. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: Source code is freely available at https://github.com/discretedynamics/cyclone under the Apache-2.0 license.

Real-Time Avoidance of Ionising Radiation Using Layered Costmaps for Mobile Robots.

Humans in hazardous environments take actions to reduce unnecessary risk, including limiting exposure to radioactive materials where ionising radiation can be a threat to human health. Robots can adopt the same approach of risk avoidance to minimise exposure to radiation, therefore limiting damage to electronics and materials. Reducing a robot's exposure to radiation results in longer operational lifetime and better return on investment for nuclear sector stakeholders. This work achieves radiation avoidance through the use of layered costmaps, to inform path planning algorithms of this additio

What neuropsychology tells us about human tool use? The four constraints theory (4CT): mechanics, space, time, and effort.

Our understanding of human tool use comes mainly from neuropsychology, particularly from patients with apraxia or action disorganization syndrome. However, there is no integrative, theoretical framework explaining what these neuropsychological syndromes tell us about the cognitive/neural bases of human tool use. The goal of the present article is to fill this gap, by providing a theoretical framework for the study of human tool use: The Four Constraints Theory (4CT). This theory rests on two basic assumptions. First, everyday tool use activities can be formalized as multiple problem situations

Large eddy simulation of a stenosed artery using a femoral artery pulsatile flow profile.

Computational fluid dynamics simulation of stenosed arteries allows the analysis of quantities including wall shear stress, velocity, and pressure; detailed in vivo measurement is difficult yet the analysis of the fluid dynamics related to stenosis is important in understanding the likely causes and ongoing effects on the integrity of the vessel. In this study, a three-dimensional Large Eddy Simulation is conducted of a 50% occluded vessel, with a typical femoral artery profile used as the transient inlet conditions. The fluid is assumed to be homogenous, Newtonian and incompressible and the w

Bacillus subtilis endospore integrity and viability on simulated Martian regolith in rotational UVC radiation exposures.

Current understanding of Martian regolith has advanced due to various rover explorations. Due to this, there are now several variants of Martian regolith that are chemically known and commercially available. These simulants are vital for panspermia models that suggest a transfer of simple life throughout the solar system via ejecta containing life from Mars when its surface was more favourable to host life. Bacteria that produce endospores are suitable candidates for these models as they have adequate protection from the harsh conditions of space. To assess this, the simple endospore former, B

An effect of weightlessness following exposure to vibration.

Vibration of germinating wheat seedlings at the levels experienced during the launch of the NASA Biosatellite II increases the frequency of developmental arrest in seedling organs. Severe vibrations lasted approximately 30 sec in two stages. Power spectral density was greatest at frequencies around 15-16 and 19-22 Hz on the entire vehicle. Vibration forces reaching the affected parts of individual seedlings could not be measured. One or more seedling organs may be expected to be absent in 11% of selected Earth-grown wheat plants. If subjected to simulated launch vibration between 12 and 27 hr

Computation of spiking activity for a stochastic spatial neuron model: effects of spatial distribution of input on bimodality and CV of the ISI distribution.

We obtain computational results for a new extended spatial neuron model in which the neuronal electrical depolarization from resting level satisfies a cable partial differential equation and the synaptic input current is also a function of space and time, obeying a first order linear partial differential equation driven by a two-parameter random process. The model is first described explicitly with the inclusion of all biophysical parameters. Simplified equations are obtained with dimensionless space and time variables. A standard parameter set is described, based mainly on values appropriate

The two sides of spatial representation in neglect patients: the same spatial distortion for different patterns of performance.

Patients with neglect show disorders in horizontal space perception. It has been argued that these disorders may depend on a distortion of space that takes the form of a left-right relaxation of the representational medium that becomes progressively "relaxed" toward the contralesional space and progressively "compressed" toward the ipsilesional space (the space anisometry hypothesis). In the present paper we tested this hypothesis by using the Oppel-Kundt illusion that consists of the perception of a filled space as larger than an empty space of the same size. Two experiments were carried out

Computer simulation clarifies mechanisms of carbon dioxide clearance during apnoea.

BACKGROUND: Apnoeic oxygenation can come close to matching the oxygen demands of the apnoeic patient but does not facilitate carbon dioxide (CO2) elimination, potentially resulting in dangerous hypercapnia. Numerous studies have shown that high-flow nasal oxygen administration prevents hypoxaemia, and appears to reduce the rate of increase of arterial CO2 partial pressure (PaCO2), but evidence is lacking to explain these effects. METHODS: We extended a high-fidelity computational simulation of cardiopulmonary physiology to include modules allowing variable effects of: (a) cardiogenic oscillat

Impact of simulated microgravity on the growth and proteomic profile of Enterobacter cloacae.

Previous studies have shown decreased microbial diversity in astronaut gut microbiomes during spaceflight, raising potential health concerns. Enterobacter cloacae, a commensal member of the human gastrointestinal tract microbiota, has the potential to cause opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients. However, little is known about how E. cloacae cells adapt to extreme environments such as microgravity, and whether this bacterium is of medical concern for astronauts during long-term spaceflight missions, as astronaut immune systems are compromised by microgravity. To this end, E. cl

Computational modelling of cardiovascular pathophysiology to risk stratify commercial spaceflight.

For more than 60 years, humans have travelled into space. Until now, the majority of astronauts have been professional, government agency astronauts selected, in part, for their superlative physical fitness and the absence of disease. Commercial spaceflight is now becoming accessible to members of the public, many of whom would previously have been excluded owing to unsatisfactory fitness or the presence of cardiorespiratory diseases. While data exist on the effects of gravitational and acceleration (G) forces on human physiology, data on the effects of the aerospace environment in unselected

Percutaneous aspiration of fluid for management of peritonitis in space.

BACKGROUND: As a medical emergency that can affect even well-screened, healthy individuals, peritonitis developing during a long-duration space exploration mission may dictate deviation from traditional clinical practice due to the absence of otherwise indicated surgical capabilities. Medical management can treat many intra-abdominal processes, but treatment failures are inevitable. In these circumstances, percutaneous aspiration under sonographic guidance could provide a "rescue" strategy. HYPOTHESIS: Sonographically guided percutaneous aspiration of intra-peritoneal fluid can be performed i

A theoretical analysis of the contributions of remodeling space, mineralization, and bone balance to changes in bone mineral density during alendronate treatment.

In patients with osteoporosis, alendronate treatment causes an increase in bone mineral density (BMD) and a decrease in fracture incidence. Alendronate acts by changing the bone remodeling process. Changes in bone remodeling resulting in decreased remodeling space, increased bone balance per remodeling cycle, and increased mineralization (ash mass/bone mass) have all been associated with alendronate treatment. Understanding the relative contributions of these parameters to BMD increases could help predict the utility of long-term (>10 years) or intermittent treatment strategies, as well as tre

Immersive clinical learning using simulation and its impact on academic performance, satisfaction, self-confidence, and anxiety among pediatric nursing students.

BACKGROUND: Clinical education forms the foundation of nursing competence, yet access to equitable and high-quality pediatric clinical placements remains limited in many regions. Immersive clinical learning through simulation offers students a safe, authentic space to apply knowledge, build confidence, and manage anxiety before caring for real patients. This study examined the association between simulation-integrated clinical learning and academic performance, satisfaction, self-confidence, and anxiety among undergraduate pediatric nursing students, comparing it with traditional hospital-base

Rapid prototyping of perfusion cell culture devices for three-dimensional imaging of mesenchymal stem cell deposition and proliferation.

Perfusion of porous scaffolds transports cells to the surface to yield cellular constructs for 3D models of disease and for tissue engineering applications. While ceramic scaffolds mimic the structure and composition of trabecular bone, their opacity and tortuous pores limit the penetration of light into the interior. Scaffolds that are both perfusable and amenable to fluorescence microscopy are therefore needed to visualize the spatiotemporal dynamics of cells in the bone microenvironment. In this study, a hybrid injection molding approach was designed to enable rapid prototyping of collector

An In Vitro Platform for Pharmacokinetic Quantification and Optimization of Cerebrospinal Fluid Filtration and Drug Circulation.

Modification of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) transport dynamics is an expanding method for treating central nervous system injury and diseases. One application of this route is to modify the distribution of solutes in the CSF; however, few tools currently exist for this purpose. The present study describes the use of a subject-specific in vitro CSF phantom to perform a parametric evaluation of the Neurapheresis™ CSF Management System (NP) for both CSF filtration and intrathecal drug circulation. An in vitro CSF phantom was constructed which included realistic anatomy for the complete subarachnoid

SpaceSeg: A High-Precision Intelligent Perception Segmentation Method for Multi-Spacecraft On-Orbit Targets.

Accurate segmentation of multiple on-orbit spacecraft remains difficult in deep-space imagery because the scenes contain large uniform backgrounds, fine structural details, and limited labeled data. To address this problem, we propose SpaceSeg, a segmentation framework that adapts a vision foundation model to the spacecraft domain. The framework introduces a Multi-Scale Hierarchical Attention Refinement Decoder (MSHARD) to improve cross-scale feature decoding, a Spatial Domain Adaptation Transform (SDAT) training strategy to improve robustness to representative space-imaging disturbances, and

Hybrid Multi-Access Method for Space-Based IoT: Adaptive Bandwidth Allocation and Beam Layout Based on User Distribution.

The development of space-based Internet of Things is limited by insufficient allocable frequency resources and low spectrum utilization. To meet the demand for massive access users under the condition of restricted frequency resources, a multi-dimensional hybrid multiple-access method for space-time-frequency-code division based on user distribution (MHSTFC-UD) is established. It divides the beam cell of a low orbit satellite into the central and edge area and dynamically adjusts the radius of the central area and the allocation of frequency resources according to the distribution of users. 3D biofabrication and space: A 'far-fetched dream' or a 'forthcoming reality'?

The long duration space missions across the Low Earth Orbit (LEO) often expose the voyagers to an abrupt zero gravity influence. The severe extraterrestrial cosmic radiation directly causes a plethora of moderate to chronic healthcare crises. The only feasible solution to manage critical injuries on board is surgical interventions or immediate return to Earth. This led the group of space medicine practitioners to adopt principles from tissue engineering and develop human tissue equivalents as an immediate regenerative therapy on board. The current review explicitly demonstrates the constructiv

Simulated Operations: Enhancing Environmental Familiarity and Confidence for Medical Students.

OBJECTIVE: Entering the surgical environment for the first time can be extremely daunting for medical students. Unfamiliarity with the layout and staff of operating rooms can be overwhelming and impact on a student's ability to learn in that environment. Our aim was to develop a teaching session to provide students with environmental familiarity prior to them attending an operating theatre. DESIGN: This study made use of high-fidelity mannequins, members of theatre staff and designing the simulation space to mirror that of an operating room. The students were involved in: Consenting the patie
