Intervention for children with severe speech disorder: a comparison of two approaches.

BACKGROUND: Children with speech disorder are a heterogeneous group (e.g. in terms of severity, types of errors and underlying causal factors). Much research has ignored this heterogeneity, giving rise to contradictory intervention study findings. This situation provides clinical motivation to identify the deficits in the speech-processing chain that underlie different subgroups of developmental speech disorder. Intervention targeting different deficits should result in a differential response to intervention across these subgroups. AIMS: To evaluate the effect of two different types of thera

[My child stutters! Which speech disorders are to be treated by a specialist?].

The etiology of stuttering is multifactorial. Developmental disturbances in "speech flow" usually clear up within six months. However, inappropriate reactions on the part of the child's surroundings (parents, unqualified physicians), but also psychosocial problems, may consolidate the disorder. Chronic stuttering may, under certain circumstances have far-reaching consequences for communication and social behavior, and even impact negatively on the victim's subsequent occupational life. A qualified diagnostic work-up leading to appropriate early pedaudiological and logopedic therapeutic measure

MED13L-related disorder characterized by severe motor speech impairment.

BACKGROUND: MED13L-related disorder is associated with intellectual disability, motor delay, and speech deficits. Previous studies have focused on broad clinical descriptions of individuals, but limited information regarding specific speech diagnoses and results of direct testing has been published to date. We conducted deep phenotyping to characterize the speech, language, motor, cognitive, and adaptive phenotypes of individuals with MED13L-related disorder. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, we administered standardized articulation, language, motor, and cognitive testing to 17 childre

Impaired Cortical Tracking of Speech in Children with Developmental Language Disorder.

In developmental language disorder (DLD), learning to comprehend and express oneself with spoken language is impaired, but the reason for this remains unknown. Using millisecond-scale magnetoencephalography recordings combined with machine learning models, we investigated whether the possible neural basis of this disruption lies in poor cortical tracking of speech. The stimuli were common spoken Finnish words (e.g., dog, car, hammer) and sounds with corresponding meanings (e.g., dog bark, car engine, hammering). In both children with DLD (10 boys and 7 girls) and typically developing (TD) cont

On the nature of the speech perception deficits in children with autism spectrum disorders.

Previous studies have claimed to show deficits in the perception of speech sounds in autism spectrum disorders (ASD). The aim of the current study was to clarify the nature of such deficits. Children with ASD might only exhibit a lesser amount of precision in the perception of phoneme categories (CPR deficit). However, these children might further present an allophonic mode of speech perception, similar to the one evidenced in dyslexia, characterised by enhanced discrimination of acoustic differences within phoneme categories. Allophonic perception usually gives rise to a categorical perceptio

Slow speech rate effects on stuttering preschoolers with disordered phonology.

To study the effects of clinicians' slow rate on the speech of children who stutter with and without a concomitant phonological disorder, an A-B-A-B single case design was used with six clinician-child dyads, where B = Clinician's slow speech rate model. Two boys and one girl, aged 49-54 months, stuttering with disordered phonology (S + DP), were compared to three boys aged 42-50 months, stuttering with normal phonology (S + NP). Articulation rates were measured in phones per second (pps) in clinician-child adjacent utterance pairs. The S + NP dyads showed improved fluency in the B condition t

[Reading and writing disorder (RWD) - criteria for a speech therapist intervention].

BACKGROUND: Children with specific language impairments carry a high risk for the development of reading and writing disorders. While deficits in phonological encoding have been well studied, there has been little research in the german speaking world into the possible correlation between linguistic ability and reading or writing skills in elementary school children. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using a group of 27 children between the ages of 8 and 11, a battery of tests were performed to research possible correlations between linguistic ability and reading and writing ability in elementary school

Surgical improvement of speech disorder caused by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive debilitating neurological disease. ALS disturbs the quality of life by affecting speech, swallowing and free mobility of the arms without affecting intellectual function. It is therefore of significance to improve intelligibility and quality of speech sounds, especially for ALS patients with slowly progressive courses. Currently, however, there is no effective or established approach to improve speech disorder caused by ALS. We investigated a surgical procedure to improve speech disorder for some patients with neuromuscular diseases with vel

[Rett syndrome a developmental disorder. Presentation of a variant with preserved speech].

Rett's syndrome is a disorder of neuropsychological development of unknown aetiology. All those described as having all the classical traits of the syndrome are girls. Typically apparently normal development in the first year of life is followed by loss of acquired hand skills and speech, together with deceleration in the growth of the head and development of characteristic hand washing movements, hyperventilation and mental retardation. The disorder is the most common cause of progressive mental retardation in girls. Parents experience health workers who have not heard about this disorder. Th

[Speech and thought disorder in frontal syndrome following subarachnoid hemorrhage].

Here is described a case of a patient suffering from cerebral hemorrhage resulting in the perforation of the third cerebral ventricle and massive damage of the frontal lobes in consequence of the rupture of an intracranial aneurysm. After neurosurgical operation the patient's general state improved, but in spite of this he displayed symptoms of the frontal syndrome with many symptoms in the area of abstractional thinking and reflectiveness and a significant reduction of higher emotionality. Very interesting in this case is the neurolinguistic symptomatology. The rehabilitation and pharmacother

Training of Speech and Language Pathologists in Neurogenic Disorders: Enhancing Expertise and Awareness in Communication and Swallowing Disorders.

PURPOSE: Previous studies conducted in Türkiye (Turkey) have revealed that the level of knowledge and awareness regarding swallowing disorders in neurogenic conditions among speech and language pathology students or graduates is relatively low. Furthermore, differences in curricula across various institutions highlight the need for standardized education in this area. This study aimed to assess changes in the knowledge and awareness levels of speech and language pathologists, as well as their opinions about the training, by organizing an educational programme focused on neurogenic communicatio
