We describe five patients with treated low-grade B-cell neoplasms who subsequently developed Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders (BLPDs). The low-grade B-cell neoplasms were B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia in four patients and splenic marginal zone lymphoma in one patient. All patients had received treatment with fludarabine for the low-grade B-cell neoplasm, and three had also received Campath-1H. The EBV-BLPDs arose 2-12 months after completion of fludarabine therapy and morphologically resembled the EBV-BLPDs that occur in the setting of iatrogenic imm

BACKGROUND: Splenosis refers to the autotransplantation of splenic tissue in a heterotopic location throughout different anatomic compartments, such as the peritoneal and pelvic cavities and even the thoracic cavity. Intrahepatic splenosis is very rare and usually mistaken for a neoplasm. The lack of typical radiological features makes it difficult to distinguish splenosis from liver tumors.
CASE REPORT: A 33-year-old female patient presented with post-traumatic splenectomy and had a history of recurrent surgery afterward. There were no significant findings in the physical examination or lab

UNLABELLED: Splenosis is a benign condition which results from the self-implantation of splenic tissue on intra or extraperitoneal surfaces, after splenic trauma or splenectomy. Patients are usually asymptomatic but may present with varied symptoms related to the implantation site. The diagnosis is a challenge because abdominal splenosis can mimic several diseases, including neoplasm. The gold standard examination for its diagnosis is scintigraphy with 99mTc-labelled heat-denatured erythrocyte. When splenosis is found in an asymptomatic patient, surgical removal is not indicated. A 57-year-old

BACKGROUND: Spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy is widely used to remove benign or low-grade malignant neoplasms located in the pancreatic body and tail. Both splenic vessels preserving (SVP-DP) and splenic vessels ligating (Warshaw technique [WT]) distal pancreatectomy are safe and effective methods but which technique is superior remains controversial. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients who underwent both methods.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Major databases, including PubMed, Embase, Science Citation Index Expanded, and The Cochrane Library, were searched for

BACKGROUND: Splenic and nodal marginal zone lymphomas (MZL) are subtypes of marginal zone-derived neoplasms. Due to their rarity, little is known concerning their relation, pattern of dissemination, and treatment outcome.
METHODS: The authors analyzed the clinicopathologic features and outcome of 43 patients (34 patients with splenic MZL and 9 patients with nodal MZL). All lesional tissues obtained at diagnosis were reviewed histologically.
RESULTS: Among the patients with splenic MZL, 30 patients had Stage IV disease (based on the Ann Arbor staging system). Twenty-six patients presented wit

Pancreatic neuroendocrine neoplasms are currently thought to originate from distinct progenitor cells that cannot differentiate into each other. We present the first reported case of a combined pancreatic neuroendocrine tumour and neuroendocrine carcinoma in a 58-year-old man who was investigated for abdominal pain and constipation. Imaging revealed a large left upper quadrant mass infiltrating the pancreatic body and tail, splenic hilum, and posterior stomach wall, with five hepatic metastases. This was treated with neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy, debulking surgery, and lutetium-177-DO

Studies of lymphoid neoplasms occurring in normal or genetically engineered mice have revealed parallels and differences to non-Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL) of humans. Some mouse lymphomas have strong histologic similarities to the human NHL subsets including precursor B- and T-cell lymphoblastic, small lymphocytic, splenic marginal zone, and diffuse large-cell B-cell lymphomas (DLCL); whether molecular parallels also exist is under study. Others mouse types such as sIg+ lymphoblastic B-cell lymphoma have no histologic equivalent in human NHL even though they share molecular deregulation of BCL6 wi

Epstein-Barr virus-positive inflammatory follicular dendritic cell sarcoma is a variant of follicular dendritic cell neoplasm most often arising in the liver or spleen. Two histological patterns can be identified in this variant, namely a granulomatous and an eosinophil-rich one. We present the case of a 69-year-old woman with a splenic mass. After being removed, the mass was gray-whitish with an area of necrosis. Histology showed a diffuse distribution of epithelioid granulomas in a background of a dense lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. Rare atypical cells EBV+ and CD21+ were present in the inte

BACKGROUND: Littoral cell angioma (LCA) is a recently described primary vascular neoplasm of the spleen that may be associated with other malignancies and may itself also have malignant potential.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of LCA that was discovered incidentally in a 52-year-old woman who presented with biliary colic at the time of consultation for cholecystectomy. This vascular neoplasm was evaluated by ultrasound, CT, MRI, Tc-99m labelled red blood cell scintigraphy, and core biopsy. A splenectomy revealed LCA by pathological evaluation. Post-operative outcome was favourable with

AIMS: Little has been written on the frequency and nature of incidental splenic lesions diagnosed on histopathological examination of pancreatosplenectomy specimens.
METHODS AND RESULTS: For 191 such specimens, incidental histological findings after haematopathologist re-review were tabulated. Cases suspicious for lymphoid malignancy underwent molecular analysis for immunoglobulin heavy and kappa light chain rearrangement. Follow-up was obtained on selected cases. In five cases (3%), the spleen was sampled but not mentioned in the original microscopic report; all were normal on re-review. Oth

Rupture of the spleen can be classified as spontaneous, traumatic, or pathologic. Pathologic rupture has been reported in infectious diseases such as infectious mononucleosis, and hematologic malignancies such as acute and chronic leukemias. Splenomegaly is considered the most relevant factor that predisposes to splenic rupture. A 66-year-old man with acute myeloid leukemia evolved from an unclassified myeloproliferative neoplasm, complaining of fatigue and mild upper left abdominal pain. He was pale and presented fever and tachypnea. Laboratory analyses showed hemoglobin 8.3g/dL, white blood

Neoplastic subacute cor pulmonale is a distinct clinical syndrome that is often not too easily diagnosed. Such rapid development of cor pulmonale is observed in a patient with lymphangitis carcinomatosa of the lung consecutive to a cancer of the stomach with splenic, pancreatic and lymph nodes invasion. Diagnosis was established on transition of the normal ECG to a typical pattern of cor pulmonale and was revealed by chest roentgenographic examination (interstitial syndrome finding) and fatal evolution of severe respiratory failure. Necroptic and pathological studies confirmed histologic lung

The rasH2TM mouse model has become the primary alternative to a 2-year mouse carcinogenicity study in safety testing of human pharmaceuticals. In this publication, we present the neoplastic incidence for 2291 control males, 2191 control females, 575 MNU-treated males, 559 MNU-treated females, and 210 urethane-treated males and females in rasH2TM carcinogenicity studies conducted from 2012 to 2024 as well as survival, body weights, and selected non-neoplastic microscopic findings for control and positive control mice. Inclusion of a positive control group is recommended to ensure regulatory acc

The t(14;19)(q32;q13) often juxtaposes BCL3 with immunoglobulin heavy chain (IGH) resulting in overexpression of the gene. In contrast to other oncogenic translocations, BCL3 rearrangement (BCL3-R) has been associated with a broad spectrum of lymphoid neoplasms. Here we report an integrative whole-genome sequence, transcriptomic, and DNA methylation analysis of 13 lymphoid neoplasms with BCL3-R. The resolution of the breakpoints at single base-pair revealed that they occur in two clusters at 5' (n=9) and 3' (n=4) regions of BCL3 associated with two different biological and clinical entities. OBJECTIVE/BACKGROUND: B-cell neoplasms are clonal tumors of B cells at various stages of maturation, including diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL), chronic lymphocytic lymphoma (CLL), Burkitt lymphoma (BL), lymphoplasmacytic lymphoma (LPL)/Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM), splenic marginal zone lymphoma (SMZL), nodal marginal zone lymphoma (NMZL), mantle cell lymphoma (MCL), follicular lymphoma (FL), and hairy cell leukemia (HCL). In this study, we analyzed the frequency of MYD88 L265P mutation and its correlation with clinico-hematological profile in mature B-cell neoplasms.

INTRODUCTION: Epithelial cysts arising from an intrapancreatic accessory spleen (ECIPAS) are rare and often misdiagnosed as pancreatic cystic neoplasms because their imaging features frequently overlap. When malignancy cannot be ruled out, surgical resection is generally indicated, and minimally invasive approaches have become an appropriate treatment option. We report a case of ECIPAS initially suspected to be a mucinous cystic neoplasm (MCN), successfully treated with spleen-preserving distal pancreatectomy using the hinotori Surgical Robot System.

Neoplasms constitute the major complication of coeliac disease, and high-grade T-cell lymphoma of the small intestine (enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma) is the most common neoplasm in this category. HLA genotyping indicates that in patients with enteropathy-associated T-cell lymphoma have the coeliac disease associated DQA1*0501, DQB1*0201 phenotype, although additional HLA-DR/DQ alleles may represent risk factors for lymphoma development. Molecular biological and immunohistochemical studies have shown that the intestinal mucosa distant from the tumour contains clonal populations of smal

Sinistral portal hypertension is a clinical syndrome of gastric variceal hemorrhage in the setting of splenic vein thrombosis due to a primary pancreatic pathology. The distinguishing features from other forms of portal hypertension are preserved liver function and a patent extrahepatic portal vein. The important causes include acute and chronic pancreatitis, pancreatic pseudocysts and pancreatic carcinomas. Benign pancreatic neoplasms only rarely cause sinistral portal hypertension. Splenic vein thrombosis complicates 7-20% of patients having pancreatitis or a pancreatic pseudocyst; however,

Detection of intrasplenic neoplasms using sonography, CT, and scintigraphy is limited by poor inherent tumor-spleen contrast relative to image noise. Despite the wide range of contrast parameters available for MR imaging, similar limitations have been found with this technique. Magnetopharmaceuticals have the ability to enhance tumor-spleen contrast and improve lesion detectability. In this study, a rodent model of cancer metastasized to the spleen was used to evaluate the potential of superparamagnetic ferrite particles as a tissue-specific reticuloendothelial contrast agent. Other studies ha
