A Comparative Study of Effectiveness of Splinting and Splinting Plus Local Corticosteroid Injection in Patients With Carpal Tunnel Syndrome: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Introduction Corticosteroid injection and wrist-hand splint are two of the most commonly used conservative options for the management of carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS). This study compares the effectiveness of splinting and splinting plus local steroid injection in improving clinical and nerve conduction findings of patients with CTS. Methods A total of 44 patients with CTS were randomized into two groups. Group A used a full-time neutral wrist splint and group B was injected with 20 mg of triamcinolone acetonide and was given a full-time neutral wrist splint for 12 weeks. Clinical and nerve con

Effectiveness of anterior repositioning splint versus other occlusal splints in the management of temporomandibular joint disc displacement with reduction: A meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Disc displacement with reduction (DDwR) is among the common disc disorders of temporomandibular joint (TMJ), which can be managed conservatively by splint therapy. Anterior repositioning splint (ARS) is the most commonly prescribed splint by dental practitioners, but not getting a normal disc-condyle relationship always and other side effects lead to need of comparing with other occlusal splints. This review will help in informed decision-making by clinicians in choosing an appropriate splint type for patients. AIM: The aim is to compare the effectiveness of ARS in the management

Occlusal splint versus modified nociceptive trigeminal inhibition splint in bruxism therapy: a randomized, controlled trial using surface electromyography.

BACKGROUND: An occlusal splint and a modified nociceptive trigeminal inhibition splint (AMPS, anterior deprogrammer, Kois deprogrammer, Lucia jig, etc.) are commonly and quite frequently used in the treatment of masticatory muscle disorders, although their sustainable and long-lasting effect on these muscles' function is still not very well known. Results of scant surface electromyography studies in patients with temporomandibular disorders have been contradictory. The aim of this study was to evaluate both devices in bruxism therapy; EMG activity levels during postural activity and maximum vo

A randomized clinical trial on comparison of corticosteroid injection with or without splinting versus saline injection with or without splinting in patients with lateral epicondylitis.

BACKGROUND: Lateral epicondylitis is a common problem affecting 1-3% of the population. There has been much debate about the best treatment modality for this condition. There is, however, no conclusive evidence in support of any of the proposed treatment modalities. In this trial, we have studied the effect of corticosteroid injection (with or without splinting) with normal saline injection (with or without splinting). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this double-blind, randomized clinical trial, individuals were randomly assigned to either of four treatment groups and received either 40 mg depomedr

Evaluation of early dynamic splinting versus static splinting for patients with transposition of the extensor carpi radialis longus to the extensor pollicis longus.

We present a group of 20 patients who underwent transposition of the extensor carpi radialis longus to the extensor pollicis longus between April 2003 and September 2007. The group was divided into ten patients with an early dynamic splint and ten patients with a static plaster cast following the standard rehabilitation protocols. We compared these two rehabilitation protocols. The post-rehabilitation total range of motion was 87.5 degrees in the dynamic group and 58.75 degrees in the patients treated by the static protocol. The total time of rehabilitation was 10.2 weeks in the dynamic and 14

Early controlled motion with dynamic splinting versus static splinting for zones III and IV extensor tendon lacerations: a preliminary report.

Recent developments in the understanding of tendon healing and the effects of early motion have led to early controlled motion programs (ECM) for lacerated extensor tendons. The purpose of this study was to determine whether there were differences in length of treatment and final results when patients who had been treated with ECM with dynamic splinting were compared with patients who had been treated with traditional static extension splinting (SES) for zone III and zone IV extensor tendon lacerations. A retrospective study of patient charts from June 1984 through January 1990 was conducted.

Comparison of tissue-interface pressure in healthy subjects lying on two trauma splinting devices: The vacuum mattress splint and long spine board.

BACKGROUND: Most emergency transport protocols in the United States currently call for the use of a spine board (SB) to help immobilize the trauma patient. However, there are concerns that their use is associated with a risk of pressure ulcer development. An alternative device, the vacuum mattress splint (VMS) has been shown by previous investigations to be a viable alternative to the SB, but no single study has explicated the tissue-interface pressure in depth. METHODS: To determine if the VMS will exert less pressure on areas of the body susceptible to pressure ulcers than a SB we enrolled

The pattern of splint usage in the management of two common temporomandibular disorders. Part I: The anterior repositioning splint in the treatment of disc displacement with reduction.

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the anterior repositioning splint is suitable treatment for temporomandibular joint disc displacement with reduction and to determine the most appropriate pattern of usage. DESIGN: Prospective random control clinical trial. SETTING: Dental school clinic unit. SUBJECTS: Three groups of patients were treated, wearing the splint either during the day or at night or all the time. RESULTS: 69% of patients could be classed as improvers, by subjective and objective assessments, at final review (3 months after treatment with an anterior repositioning splint). 88% of p

A comparative study of double occlusal splints combined with joint cavity injection and manual reduction in the treatment of anterior disc displacement without reduction versus anterior repositioning splints: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVES: Some patients with anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDWoR) experience restricted mouth opening after manual reduction. This study aimed to compare the therapeutic efficacy of modified double occlusal splints with traditional anterior repositioning splints (ARS) in treating ADDWoR, to identify a simple, effective, and stable clinical approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 107 patients were enrolled in this single-center retrospective study. Those using double occlusal splints after successful manual reduction were assigned to observation groups (Group A, Group B)

Versatility of Hard Occlusal Splints in Optimizing Outcomes in Patients with Old Pan-facial Fractures.

UNLABELLED: Pan-facial fracture repair is considered one of the most challenging complex reconstructive procedures to perform. It is always better to treat facial fractures as soon as possible. A delay of several days or weeks makes an ideal anatomic reduction difficult, if not impossible. METHODS: Patients presenting late with noncompound pan-facial fractures and interrupting maxillary and mandibular arches who were candidates for ORIF were included. Patients had been divided randomly into two groups: group A was managed by the ordinary sequence of repair, and group B was managed with the ai

Effect of Side Struts on the Strength of Long Arm Plaster Splints: A Biomechanical Study.

BACKGROUND: There are multiple methods of achieving upper extremity immobilization after pediatric elbow injuries; however, no biomechanical study has established an optimal construct. The goal of this study was to compare the strength of commonly used long arm splints and to evaluate the effect of reinforcing plaster splints with side struts. METHODS: Five categories of long arm posterior slab splints were tested: 4-inch plaster without side struts, 4-inch plaster with a medial side strut, 4-inch plaster with medial and lateral side struts, 5-inch plaster without side struts, and 4-inch fibe

Oral splints for patients with temporomandibular disorders or bruxism: a systematic review and economic evaluation.

BACKGROUND: Splints are a non-invasive, reversible management option for temporomandibular disorders or bruxism. The clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of splints remain uncertain. OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to evaluate the clinical effectiveness and cost-effectiveness of splints for patients with temporomandibular disorders or bruxism. This evidence synthesis compared (1) all types of splint versus no/minimal treatment/control splints and (2) prefabricated versus custom-made splints, for the primary outcomes, which were pain (temporomandibular disorders) and tooth wear (bruxi
