Redistribution of Pulmonary Vascular Volume at Upright versus Supine CT.

Background Gravity redistributes pulmonary blood flow in the upright position; however, how total pulmonary vascular volume (TPVV) and its arterial and venous components depend on position remains unclear. Purpose To quantify position-dependent changes in TPVV and the corresponding arterial and venous components across lung lobes and vertical lung regions using upright chest CT. Materials and Methods This secondary analysis of a prospective, single-center study enrolled healthy adult volunteers who underwent same-day noncontrast chest CT in supine and upright positions using a 320-detector row

Stand up urgency: is this symptom related to a urethral mechanism?

OBJECTIVE: To study the role of women's position as a stimulus of urgency, and specifically the change of position, i.e. to stand up form a lying or sitting position. Thus, we compared clinical and urodynamics characteristics among women with overactive bladder syndrome (OAB) depending of the position which could trigger urgency. METHODS: Thirty-eight females with complaints of urgency, without urinary infection, neurological or urological diseases, were prospectively enrolled. Patients completed a study-specific questionnaire asking about urgency and urge incontinence when in three different

Can grip strength capture what chair standing does? methodological considerations on functional measures and successful aging in three international cohorts.

Population aging has accelerated globally, making successful aging a key public health priority. Zhuang and Gao address the prospective association between cumulative average grip strength and successful aging using three international cohorts. While their multi-cohort design offers valuable cross-population insights, several methodological choices warrant consideration. Grip strength may not fully capture functional determinants of successful aging. Self-reported chronic disease introduces misclassification bias varying across socioeconomic groups. The two-stage temporal design does not fully

Comparison of methods for determining parameters related to ankle joint quasi-stiffness during quiet standing.

Ankle joint quasi-stiffness is a measure representing the control of quiet standing. Here we investigated three methods for determining parameters associated with ankle joint quasi-stiffness. Eleven healthy, young males were asked to stand quietly with eyes open (EO) and eyes closed (EC). Ankle joint quasi-stiffness was computed using two methods, one proposed by Winter et al. (Winter DA, et al. J Neurophysiol 80: 1211-1221, 1998) ([Formula: see text]) and another by Loram and Lakie (Loram ID, et al. J Physiol 540: 1111-1124, 2002) ([Formula: see text]). Both values were normalized using parti

Bipedal static postural stability in children with achondroplasia compared to typically developed children in the age range of 9-12 years - A pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Postural stability is a key factor in maintaining an upright standing position. Children with average height (CAH) have elaborate general postural stability up to the age of seven years. Children with achondroplasia (ACH) face body disproportions like shorter arms and legs, bowing of the legs as well as hyperlordosis and hypokyphosis in the spine. These misalignments might affect the postural stability of children with achondroplasia. Therefore, this study aims to investigate if there are differences between children with ACH and CAH in four different bipedal static balance tasks.

Experimental characterization of motion resistance of the sacroiliac joint.

BACKGROUND: The human sacroiliac joint (SIJ) in vivo is exposed to compressive and shearing stress environment, given the joint lines are almost parallel to the direction of gravity. The SIJ supports efficient bipedal walking. Unexpected or unphysiological, repeated impacts are believed to cause joint misalignment and result in SIJ pain. In the anterior compartment of the SIJ being synovial, the articular surface presents fine irregularities, potentially restricting the motion of the joints. OBJECTIVE: To clarify how the SIJ articular surface affects the resistance of the motion under physiol

Supported Standing and Supported Stepping Devices for Children with Non-Ambulant Cerebral Palsy: An Interdependence and F-Words Focus.

Children functioning at Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) levels IV-V cannot maintain an aligned standing position or take steps without support. Upright positioning and mobility devices have psycho-social significance for these children and their families, enhancing use of vision, communication, functioning and emotional well-being. Standers and supported stepping devices facilitate opportunities for biomechanical loading, potentially helping to build and maintain muscle and bone integrity, and they promote physical development. However, families are often required to choose

Is There a Correlation between Dental Occlusion, Postural Stability and Selected Gait Parameters in Adults?

Background: There is still an ongoing debate about the role of the craniomandibular system, including occlusal conditions, on postural stability. This study aims to assess the role of antero-posterior malocclusion on postural control and plantar pressure distribution during standing and walking. Methods: 90 healthy volunteers (aged 19 to 35) were qualified for the study. The subjects were assigned to three groups, depending on the occlusion type. Each group (Angle Class I, II and III) consisted of 30 people. The research procedure included a clinical occlusal assessment performed by a dentist.

Treadmill-based system for postural studies: Design and validation.

Computer-controlled treadmills are common in many gait labs and offer great potential for conducting perturbation-based postural studies. However, the time-course of these disturbances can be too brief to be controlled manually through product software. Here we present a system that combines a Bertec® split-belt treadmill with custom hardware and software to deliver postural disturbances during standing and record data from multiple sources simultaneously. We used this system to administer to 15 healthy participants an 8-session perturbation-based training protocol in which they learned to res

Subthreshold white noise vibration alters trembling sway in older adults.

BACKGROUND: Somatosensory deficit is a significant contributor to falls in older adults. Stochastic resonance has shown promise in recent studies of somatosensation-based balance disorders, improving many measures of stability both inside and outside of the clinic. However, our understanding of this effect from a physiological perspective is poorly understood. Therefore, the primary goal of this study is to explore the influence of subthreshold vibratory stimulation on sway under the rambling-trembling framework. METHODS: 10 Healthy older adults (60-65 years) volunteered to participate in thi

Exposure to inclined trunk postures in surgical staff.

In surgical staff, low-back pain (LBP) is prevalent and prolonged trunk inclination is hypothesized to be one of its potential causes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the magnitude and duration of trunk inclination in the sagittal plane of surgical assistants during surgical procedures. The three-dimensional trunk orientation was measured in 91 surgical assistants across four medical facilities during surgical procedures using an inertial measurement unit on the thorax. Per participant, Exposure Variation Analysis was used to evaluate the percentage of the total time of trunk inclination

The Effects of Constraining Head Rotation on Eye and Whole-Body Coordination During Standing Turns at Different Speeds.

A limitation of the ability to rotate the head with respect to the upper body has been associated with turning problems; however, the extent of head constraints on whole-body coordination has not been fully determined. The aim of this study was to limit head on body rotation and observe the effects on whole-body coordination during standing turns at various speeds. Twelve participants completed standing turns at 180°. A Vicon motion system and a BlueGain Electrooculography system were used to record movement kinematics and measure horizontal eye movements, respectively. All participants were t

Impaired Stabilization of Orthostatic Cerebral Oxygenation Is Associated With Slower Gait Speed: Evidence From The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral autoregulation (CAR) systems maintain blood flow to the brain across a wide range of blood pressures. Deficits in CAR have been linked to gait speed (GS) but previous studies had small sample sizes and used specialized equipment which impede clinical translation. The purpose of this work was to assess the association between GS and orthostatic cerebral oxygenation in a large, community-dwelling sample of older adults. METHOD: Data for this study came from the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing. A near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) device attached to the forehead of each pa

Effects of age and surface instability on the control of the center of mass.

During standing, posture can be controlled by accelerating the Center of Mass (CoM) through shifting the center of pressure (CoP) within the base of support by applying ankle moments ("CoP mechanism"), or through the "counter-rotation mechanism", i.e., changing the angular momentum of segments around the CoM to change the direction of the ground reaction force. Postural control develops over the lifespan; at both the beginning and the end of the lifespan adequate postural control appears more challenging. In this study, we aimed to assess mediolateral balance performance and the related use of

Impaired sit-to-stand is perceived by caregivers to affect mobility and self-care in children with cerebral palsy who had moderate to severe mobility limitations: A mixed methods analysis.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the effects that impaired ability to sit-to-stand has on upright mobility and self-care in children with cerebral palsy and how this in turn may affect their caregivers. METHODS: A mixed methods research design was conducted with 25 children who had cerebral palsy with moderate to high mobility limitations (GMFCS levels III and IV) and their caregivers. Caregivers were interviewed about their child's mobility and self-care. The independence of each child's activities was rated using the mobility and self-care domains of the Functional Independence Measure for Children (W

Motion sickness decreases low back function and changes gene expression in military aircrew.

BACKGROUND: Motion sickness and low back disorders are prevalent and debilitating conditions that affect the health, performance, and operational effectiveness of military aircrews. This study explored the effects of a motion sickness stimulus on biomechanical and genetic factors that could potentially be involved in the causal pathways for both disorders. METHODS: Subjects recruited from a military population were exposed to either a mild (n = 12) or aggressive (n = 16) motion sickness stimulus in a Neuro-Otologic Test Center. The independent variable of interest was the motion sickness stim

Efficacy of Galvanic Vestibular Stimulation as a Display Modality Dissociated from Self-Orientation.

OBJECTIVE: We propose and assess galvanic vestibular stimulation (GVS) as a novel means to provide information dissociated from self-orientation. BACKGROUND: In modern user interfaces, visual and auditory modalities dominate information transfer so much that these "processing channels" become overloaded with information. Fortunately, the brain is capable of processing separate sensory sources in parallel enabling alternative display modalities to inform operators more effectively and without increasing cognitive strain. To date, the vestibular system, normally responsible for sensing self-ori

Real-time conscious postural control is not affected when balancing on compliant surface by young adults.

Previous research has illustrated that real-time conscious postural control (i.e., reinvestment - shifting from movement automaticity to a more consciously controlled and monitoring of movement) increased with standing task difficulties among healthy older adults. However, such association has not been investigated in the younger population. This study attempted to examine real-time conscious postural control among healthy young adults when performing different standing tasks on a compliant (foam) surface.
