Clinical Success of Fiber-reinforced Composite Resin as a Space Maintainer.

INTRODUCTION: The early loss of deciduous molars is a frequently encountered problem in dentistry. Various space maintainer designs were developed to prevent the loss of the space. The aim of this study was to evaluate long-term clinical performance and survival rates of fiber-reinforced composite resin (FRCR) as a space maintainer clinically. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was designed on 44 children who had early missed deciduous molars. Space maintainers were prepared on plaster models of patients and fixed directly to the adjacent teeth. Survival rate and whether it causes any damage t

How to manage the biological risk in a dental clinic: current and future perspectives.

Dental personnel (DP) may be exposed to pathogens during dental treatment, either through contact contaminated equipment, or with blood and respiratory secretion. On the other hand, health care professionals are constantly exposed to pathogens and opportunists in their work environment. Consequently, the dental healthcare environment is connected with the risk of exposure to biological agents both for patients and dental workers, and involves a wide number of microorganisms that can be present in biological matrices (gingival fluids, saliva, blood), contaminated and/or non-sanitized surfaces,

Dentistry's role in tobacco control.

BACKGROUND: Cigarette smoking remains the nation's leading preventable cause of premature mortality. Tobacco use also is responsible for 75 percent of deaths resulting from oral and pharyngeal cancer, more than one-half of the cases of periodontitis and numerous other oral health effects. METHODS: The author summarized the prevalence of tobacco use in the United States, evaluated recent literature on the status of tobacco control activities in dental schools and dental practice, and reviewed new guidelines on clinical and community-based interventions for tobacco use. RESULTS: Nearly 25 perc

Impacts of hazardous noise levels on hearing loss and tinnitus in dental professionals.

BACKGROUND: Hazardous noise exposure is an important health concern in many workplaces and is one of the most common work-related injuries in the United States. Dental professionals are frequently exposed to high levels of occupational noise in their daily work environment. This noise is generated by various dental handpieces such as drills, suctions, and ultrasonic scalers. Prolonged exposure to such noise levels is known to have adverse effects on hearing health. Despite the prevalence of occupational noise in dentistry, there is a paucity of research specifically examining the prevalence of

Development of a reference interval for urinary ammonia-to-creatinine ratio in feline patients.

BACKGROUND: Disruption of acid-base homeostasis can lead to many clinical problems. Ammonia excretion by the kidneys is critical to maintaining acid-base homeostasis through bicarbonate production. Measurement of ammonia excretion may help determine if the kidneys are properly functioning in maintaining acid-base balance. Reference intervals are essential tools for clinical decision-making but do not currently exist for urinary ammonia-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in feline patients. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to generate a reference interval (RI) for UACR in healthy adult cats. METHODS: The

Establishment of an RI for the urine ammonia-to-creatinine ratio in dogs.

BACKGROUND: Ammonia is produced and excreted by the kidney, contributing to systemic acid-base homeostasis through the production of bicarbonate. Disorders of acid-base balance can lead to many clinical problems and measuring ammonia excretion helps in determining if the kidneys are responding to acid-base challenges appropriately. Reference intervals are integral to clinical decision-making, and there is no current RI for the urine ammonia-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) in dogs. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to generate an RI for the UACR in healthy adult dogs. METHODS: The study used adult, clie

A critical review of Dr. Charles S. Greene's article titled "Managing the Care of Patients with Temporomandibular Disorders: a new Guideline for Care" and a revision of the American Association for Dental Research's 1996 policy statement on temporomandibular disorders, approved by the AADR Council in March 2010, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association September 2010.

Dr. Charles Greene's article, "Managing the Care of Patients with TMDs A New Guideline for Care," and the American Association for Dental Research's (AADR) 2010 Policy Statement on Temporomandibular Disorders, published in the Journal of the American Dental Association (JADA) September 2010, are reviewed in detail. The concept that all temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) should be lumped into one policy statement for care is inappropriate. TMDs are a collection of disorders that are treated differently, and the concept that TMDs must only be managed within a biopsychosocial model of care is ina

Platelet rich plasma injection grafts for musculoskeletal injuries: a review.

In Europe and the United States, there is an increasing prevalence of the use of autologous blood products to facilitate healing in a variety of applications. Recently, we have learned more about specific growth factors, which play a crucial role in the healing process. With that knowledge there is abundant enthusiasm in the application of concentrated platelets, which release a supra-maximal quantity of these growth factors to stimulate recovery in non-healing injuries. For 20 years, the application of autologous PRP has been safely used and documented in many fields including; orthopedics, s

Reviews of evidence on interventions to prevent dental caries, oral and pharyngeal cancers, and sports-related craniofacial injuries.

This report presents the results of systematic reviews of effectiveness, applicability, other positive and negative effects, economic evaluations, and barriers to use of selected population-based interventions intended to prevent or control dental caries, oral and pharyngeal cancers, and sports-related craniofacial injuries. The related systematic reviews are linked by a common conceptual approach. These reviews form the basis of recommendations by the Task Force on Community Preventive Services (the Task Force) about the use of these selected interventions. The Task Force recommendations are

Prevention and the demand for dental care in an international perspective.

Organizational patterns of preventive services aiming at stimulating dental health education and hygiene in the young are differently realized in various countries. The priority allotted to dental care within total health services differs in each society. Differences in allocation of responsibility for dental health are reflected in the proportion of co-payment costs borne by the individual. Low perceptions of need by individuals may cause different backlogs of professionally determined need which influence the supply of care and ensuing costs. This is reflected in various levels of expenditur

Validity and repeatability of the pulp/tooth area ratio for age estimation in adults: A test of the Cameriere et al. methods in a U.S. population.

Estimating age as accurately as possible in older adults (50 years and above) remains a challenge. Dental methods such as the pulp/tooth area ratio developed by Cameriere et al. have shown promising results in different populations. However, their applicability across forensic contexts remains underexplored. This study evaluates the repeatability and validity of the Cameriere method in a contemporary U.S. sample using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) scans. A total of 136 mandibular canines, 89 first premolars, and 82 second premolars from 146 individuals were analyzed. Intra- and inter-ob

The military oral health care system as a model for eliminating disparities in oral health.

BACKGROUND: Healthy People (HP) 2010 is a national health promotion and disease prevention initiative of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The HP 2010 report highlighted a range of racial/ethnic disparities in dental health. A substantial portion of these disparities appear to be explained by differences in access to care. Members of the U.S. military have universal access to care that also has a compulsory component. The authors conducted a study to investigate the extent to which disparities in progress toward achievement of HP 2010 objectives were lower among the military po

Fluoridation and social equity.

The overall reduction in caries prevalence and severity in the United States over recent decades is largely due to widespread exposure to fluoride, most notably from the fluoridation of drinking waters. Despite this overall reduction, however, caries distribution today remains skewed, with the poor and deprived carrying a disproportionate share of the disease burden. Dental caries, like many other diseases, is directly related to low socioeconomic status (SES). In some communities, however, caries experience has now diminished to the point where the need for continuing water fluoridation is be

Nano-warfare in the oral cavity: antimicrobial strategies and mechanisms in nanodentistry.

The oral environment is a very complex, diverse ecological system consisting of microorganisms and host tissues. To maintain oral health, a balance between these two elements is vital. Recent advances in the development of nanotechnology provide dentists with many new ways to kill bacterial pathogens in dental settings. In particular, the emergence of "nanodentistry" represents a means of using engineered nanoscale materials and systems to effectively combat bacterial biofilm formation and the resultant infections associated with biofilms. This review article will provide an overview of nanowa

Ingenious Architecture and Coloration Generation in Enamel of Rodent Teeth.

Teeth exemplify architectures comprising an interplay of inorganic and organic constituents, resulting in sophisticated natural composites. Rodents (Rodentia) showcase extraordinary adaptations, with their continuously growing incisors surpassing human teeth in functional and structural optimizations. In this study, employing state-of-the-art direct atomic-scale imaging and nanoscale spectroscopies, we present compelling evidence that the release of material from ameloblasts and the subsequent formation of iron-rich enamel and surface layers in the constantly growing incisors of rodents are co
