Incidence of strabismus surgery after vitreoretinal surgery.

Strabismus following other intraocular surgery has several well-described etiologies. Vitreoretinal surgeries are the most likely to require retrobulbar anesthesia and exoplants, two commonly associated risk factors for postoperative strabismus. A reliable assessment of the incidence of strabismus secondary to other ocular surgery has not been established. We report a large cohort of vitreoretinal surgery cases performed in the same multispecialty practice with the area's only adult strabismus surgeon. We specifically examined strabismus surgery as the inclusion criteria, because nonsurgical m

[Rational development of new strabismus surgical procedures].

With the development of science and technology, more and more new strabismus surgical procedures are introduced in the field of strabismus and pediatric ophthalmology. On one hand, these new surgical procedures improve the effect of strabismus correction and restore or rebuild binocular single vision to some extent. On the other hand, some problems associated with these surgeries have to be faced and resolved. This article review the surgical design mechanism, indications, technology, limitations, potential challenges and ways of resolution, so as to provide reference for clinicians in the pro

Strabismus patterns after cataract surgery in adults.

New-onset binocular diplopia after cataract surgery in adults is a rare but significant complication. The aim of this study was to analyze causes, risk factors, and treatment outcomes. Forty consecutive patients with new-onset binocular diplopia after uncomplicated cataract surgery were enrolled in this retrospective study at a tertiary medical center. We evaluated risk factors including type of anesthesia, preoperative presence of strabismus, and others regarding their effect on the development of diplopia after cataract surgery. We further analyzed ocular alignment and motility at presentati

Diplopia and Strabismus After Corneal Refractive Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Diplopia and strabismus are known complications after corneal refractive surgery (CRS). Within the U.S. Armed Forces, refractive surgery is used to improve the operational readiness of the service member, and these complications could cause significant degradation to their capability. This study was performed in order to identify the incidence of strabismus and diplopia following CRS within the U.S. Military Health System. METHODS: A retrospective review of all patients who underwent photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) or laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) in the Depart

Management of stretched scar- induced secondary strabismus.

BACKGROUND: To determine characteristics and management of consecutive or recurrent strabismus secondary to stretched scar. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of all patients diagnosed with late secondary consecutive or recurrent strabismus due to stretched scar from 2012 to 2017. The diagnosis of stretched scar was made in any case of late (≥ 1 month) consecutive or recurrent strabismus associated with underaction of the previously operated muscle. The diagnosis was confirmed intraoperatively by negative forced duction test and the characteristic appearance of the scar tissue. Surgical

American Insight Into Strabismus Surgery Before 1838.

English surgeon John Taylor attempted to perform strabismus surgery in the 18th century. The field languished until, in Germany, treatment of strabismus by cutting an extraocular muscle was proposed by Louis Stromeyer in 1838 and performed by Johann Friedrich Dieffenbach in 1839. According to traditional teaching, there has never been any proof that anyone in the United States thought of the idea of strabismus surgery before Stromeyer's report. In 1841, American surgeon William Gibson wrote that he had cut extraocular muscles to treat strabismus several times beginning in 1818 but never publis

[PONV after strabismus surgery : Risk adapted prophylaxis?].

BACKGROUND: Following strabismus surgery, patients frequently develop variable degrees of postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV). These symptoms cause discomfort and result in serious complications such as intramuscular bleeding and subconjunctival hemorrhage. In children long lasting PONV can lead to and electrolyte imbalance and dehydration. A prolonged course of recovery is the consequence. For the hospital, PONV can also involve negative economic impacts because of a damaged public reputation of the institution. There is still an ongoing debate on wether prophylaxis of PONV is necessary

Strabismus in infants following congenital cataract surgery.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to determine the incidence and characteristics of strabismus following congenital cataract surgery in infants. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients aged <12 months who underwent surgery for congenital cataract and were followed-up for ≥1 years were included. Patients that had strabismus prior to surgery were excluded. Data regarding gender, cataract laterality, morphology, and density, age at the time of cataract surgery, ocular motility post surgery, and the presence of nystagmus were retrospectively obtained from the patients' records. RESULTS: The study included 79 pa

Adjustable versus non-adjustable sutures for strabismus.

BACKGROUND: Strabismus, or squint, can be defined as a deviation from perfect ocular alignment and can be classified in many ways according to its aetiology and presentation. Treatment can be broadly divided into medical and surgical options, with a variety of surgical techniques being available, including the use of adjustable or non-adjustable sutures for the extraocular muscles. There exists an uncertainty as to which of these techniques produces a better surgical outcome, and also an opinion that the adjustable suture technique may be of greater benefit in certain situations. OBJECTIVES:

Strabismus following bilateral cataract surgery in childhood.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of strabismus in children undergoing bilateral cataract surgery. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of 56 children undergoing bilateral cataract surgery who had no evidence of strabismus before the surgery and a difference of less than two Snellen lines in postoperative best-corrected visual acuity between the two eyes. RESULTS: Strabismus developed in 31 (55.4%) patients after cataract extraction. Age at the time of cataract diagnosis (P = 0.006) and extraction (P = 0.025) was significantly lower in the strabismus group

Strabismus surgery: adjustable sutures-good for all?

AIMS: The role of adjustable sutures in strabismus surgery has mainly been limited to conditions like dysthyroid restrictive myopathy, blow-out fractures of orbit, aberrant regeneration of nerves, and certain other long-standing and complicated squints. In this clinical study, an attempt has been made to analyse the efficacy of adjustable sutures in squint surgery as a routine procedure. We also studied patients' acceptability and satisfaction following this procedure and analysed various factors that may influence the surgical outcome (age, sex, previous surgeries, injections of botulinum tox

Anomalous orbital structures resulting in unusual strabismus.

Anomalous orbital structures are a rare cause of strabismus. These structures attach to the globe and produce a mechanical restriction, resulting in incommitant motility disorders. Three types of anomalous structures have been described. The first arise from the extraocular muscles themselves and insert in abnormal locations. The second are fibrous bands located beneath the rectus muscles. The third are discrete anomalous muscles that originate in the posterior orbit and insert in abnormal locations on the globe. These structures have been associated with unusual patterns of strabismus. Clinic

[Binocular vision after strabismus surgery in adulthood].

The authors tested preoperatively and postoperatively for binocularity in a series of 29 adults who underwent surgery for long-standing concomitant strabismus. The authors used Bagolini lenses, troposcope and Worth's lights as the tests for binocularity. The patients in whom the postoperative deviation was greater than 10 prism diopters from orthotropia were excluded. Binocularity was not find at any patient before surgery. The authors made a finding of binocularity after strabismus surgery in 14% of patients, in spite of satisfactory parallel ocular alignment in 52% of patients. The results o

20th annual Frank Costenbader Lecture--adult strabismus.

BACKGROUND: A retrospective analysis of adults with strabismus was done to examine the potential risks and the possible benefits of surgical treatment and to describe the types of adult strabismus. METHODS: Eight hundred ninety-two patients were analyzed. Age at time of surgery ranged from 9 years to 89 years. The average follow up was 34 months. Major types of strabismus were grouped by their original diagnoses. The group of patients with horizontal strabismus, which usually had an onset before 9, was termed the before visual maturity (BVM) group. The group of patients with paretic or restri
