A comprehensive global profile of the distribution of ARGs in freshwater biofilms is lacking. We utilized metagenomic approaches to reveal the diversity, abundance, transferability and hosts of ARGs in 96 freshwater biofilm samples from 38 sampling sites across four countries. The abundant ARGs were associated with bacitracin, multidrug, polymyxin macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin (MLS) aminoglycoside, β-lactam, chloramphenicol, sulfonamide and tetracycline resistance, consistent with the spectrum of antibiotics commonly used in human or veterinary medicine. As expected, the resistome in fre

To find a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of skin and soft tissue infections, we evaluated the effects of combinations of retapamulin with macrolide, lincosamide, and streptogramin (MLS) antibiotics against Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Enterococcus faecium, and Enterococcus faecalis. Using both the disk diffusion test and checkerboard assay, we initially examined the effects of combinations of retapamulin with MLS antibiotics against standard strains of these species. Combinations of retapamulin with erythromycin, quinupristin/dalfopristin and quinupristin showed sy

Food consumption allows the entrance of bacteria and their antibiotic resistance (AR) genes into the human oral cavity. To date, very few studies have examined the influence of diet on the composition of the salivary microbiota, and even fewer investigations have specifically aimed to assess the impact of different long-term diets on the salivary resistome. In this study, the saliva of 144 healthy omnivores, ovo-lacto-vegetarians, and vegans were screened by nested PCR for the occurrence of 12 genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B, vancomycin, and

SCOPE: The effects of long-term omnivore, ovo-lacto vegetarian and vegan diets on the occurrence of 12 antibiotic resistance (AR) genes in the human gut were studied.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The feces of 144 healthy volunteers recruited from Turin, Bari, Bologna, and Parma were screened for the occurrence of genes conferring resistance to tetracyclines, macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B, vancomycin, and β-lactams. Overall, erm(B), tet(W) and tet(M) were detected at the highest frequency. A low effect from the diet on the AR gene distribution emerged, with tet(K) and vanB occurring at a lower

Antimicrobial resistance is now documented in a substantial proportion of laboratory-confirmed bacterial infections worldwide, and although the most extreme extensively drug-resistant (XDR) and pandrug-resistant (PDR) phenotypes are concentrated among Gram-negative bacilli, resistance in Gram-positive cocci continues to rise and remains a major determinant of outcomes in severe infection. This structured comprehensive narrative review, based on a documented search of PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus and Web of Science to June 2026, is confined to the three Gram-positive cocci of greatest clinical import

The treatment of infections caused by Staphylococcus hominis remains a challenge, mainly due to the increasing resistance of these bacteria to antibiotics. The aim of the study was to determine antibiotic resistance in 62 strains S. hominis isolated from clinical materials, and to identify the molecular basis of resistance to antibiotics. Forty-six strains were both methicillin-resistant and harbored the mecA gene. Twenty-three of these strains had mec complex A and ccr complex AB1. Such a combination of the mec and ccr complexes does not correspond to any cassettes that have been demonstrated

Background: The human oral microbiome is a critical reservoir for antibiotic resistance; however, subgingival peri-implant biofilms remain underexplored in this context. We aimed to explore the prevalence and distribution of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in metagenomes derived from saliva and subgingival peri-implant biofilms. Methods: A total of 100 metagenome datasets from 40 individuals were retrieved from the Sequence Read Archive (SRA) database. Of these, 20 individuals had exclusively healthy implants and 20 had both healthy and affected implants with peri-implantitis. ARGs and thei

Driven by anthropogenic pressure, Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) could transfer from the environmental resistome into human commensals or even pathogens. The transport of ARGs through aquatic ecosystems is crucial and has attracted attention. Here, we employed metagenomic and binning to compare ARGs profiles, their co-occurrence with metal resistance genes (MRGs) and mobile genetic elements (MGEs), and their hosts between pristine and anthropogenic influenced rivers and explore the ecological mechanisms underlying the dissemination of ARGs induced by anthropogenic activities. The significa

Approximately 40% of treatments of chronic and recurrent osteomyelitis fail in part due to bacterial persistence. Staphylococcus aureus, the predominant pathogen in human osteomyelitis, is known to persist by phenotypic adaptation as small-colony variants (SCVs) and by formation of intracellular reservoirs, including those in major bone cell types, reducing susceptibility to antibiotics. Intracellular infections with S. aureus are difficult to treat; however, there are no evidence-based clinical guidelines addressing these infections in osteomyelitis. We conducted a systematic review of the li

RATIONALE: Carry-over is an undesirable contamination from medicated to non-medicated during the production of feedingstuffs. In 2014 the European Parliament and the Council started working to produce a new regulatory act that will fix tolerable levels of drugs by carry-over in non-target feed to have a harmonized practice to evaluate this contamination by veterinary drugs.
METHODS: We developed a rapid and effective multi-analyte method coupling ultraperformance liquid chromatography to tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC/MS/MS) for the detection of 37 drugs belonging to different classes of anti

Mycoplasmagenitalium is an important sexually transmitted pathogen responsible for both male and female genital tract disease. Appreciation of its significance in human disease has been hampered by its slow growth in culture, difficulty in isolating it, and lack of commercial molecular-based tests for rapid detection. Comparatively few in vitro data on antimicrobial susceptibility are available due to the scarcity of clinical isolates and difficulty in performing susceptibility tests to determine minimum inhibitory concentrations for M. genitalium. Antimicrobial agents that inhibit protein syn

The aim of the present study was to determine the rate and mechanisms of resistance to macrolides, lincosamides, and streptogramin B (MLSB) antibiotics of Staphylococcus aureus collected in Central Greece. Of the 2,893 S. aureus collected during 2012-2017, 1,161 isolates (40.2%) exhibited resistance to at least one of the MLSB agents. The rate of erythromycin resistance was statistically significantly higher in methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) (58.6%) than in methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) isolates (20.7%) (p = 0.002). Two hundred seventy-five representative MLSB-resistant S. aur

Airborne antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) can critically impact human health. We performed resistome profiling of 283 personal airborne exposure samples from 15 participants spanning 890 days and 66 locations. We found a greater diversity and abundance of airborne bacteria community and antibiotic resistomes in spring than in winter, and temperature contributed largely to the difference. A total of 1123 bacterial genera were detected, with 16 genera dominating. Of which, 7/16 were annotated as major antibiotic resistance gene (ARG) hosts. The participants were exposed to a highly dynamic co

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) for disease monitoring is highly promising but requires consistent methodologies that incorporate predetermined objectives, targets, and metrics. Herein, we describe a comprehensive metagenomics-based approach for global surveillance of antibiotic resistance in sewage that enables assessment of 1) which antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) are shared across regions/communities; 2) which ARGs are discriminatory; and 3) factors associated with overall trends in ARGs, such as antibiotic concentrations. Across an internationally sourced transect of sewage samples
