Parents' attitudes related to melanocytic nevus count in children.

Sun exposure, fair phototype, and a high common melanocytic nevus (MN) count have been identified as the most important risk factors for melanoma. MN are mainly acquired during childhood, and their relationship to sun exposure, sunburn, and light skin complexion is well documented. The purpose of this study was to investigate how the sun protection attitudes of parents and their offspring affect MN development in children. We designed a cross-sectional study in 828 9-year-old school children. Trained nurses counted the MN on each child's back and arms, depending on their size. Questionnaires f

Patients' sun practices, perceptions of skin cancer and their risk of skin cancer in rural Australia.

ISSUE ADDRESSED: Skin cancer affects nearly one in three Australians. As a preventable disease there have been many public awareness campaigns targeting skin cancer knowledge and sun protection in Australia in the last 30 years to increase knowledge of the disease and how to prevent it. Despite higher incidence and mortality of skin cancer in regional Australia and adults over 65 years though, little research exists examining this high-risk population's skin cancer knowledge and sun behaviours, with most previous research conducted in urban Australia or overseas. This study aimed to examine ad

Behavior modification obtained by sun protection education coupled with removal of a skin cancer.

The 1042 people in this study who had a nonmelanoma skin cancer surgically removed received repetitive and interactive oral and written education in forms of sun protection. One year after these educational efforts, the subjects responded to a questionnaire that measured their compliance. Sixty-two percent complied with starting to use sunscreens and 56% changed their habits of outdoor activities. The portion of behavioral change attributable to surgery alone vs surgery plus education was unable to be determined. Despite intensive educational efforts, the noncompliance was 38%. Pigmented naevi and sun protection behaviour among primary and secondary school students in an Eastern Hungarian city.

BACKGROUND: The most important risk factors for malignant melanoma are skin type I or II, large number of atypical naevi and a history of sunburn in childhood and adolescence. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed to assess skin type, number of pigmented lesions and sun protection behaviour in 1157 12- to 19-year-old Hungarian students at 20 primary and secondary schools in Debrecen, Hungary. After receiving dermatological training, 18 school doctors examined the students' skin. A questionnaire was completed by the students with the assistance of their parents about sun protection, s

Ambient UVB and melanoma risk in the United States: a case-control analysis.

PURPOSE: Exposure to ultraviolet-B (UVB) radiation is a well-established risk factor for human cutaneous malignant melanoma. Intermittent and cumulative exposures from UVB have been estimated most often by interview questionnaire. This study assessed cumulative UVB using a ground-based measurement instrument to estimate the association between UVB and melanoma. METHODS: Population-based, incident cases of melanoma (n = 380) and frequency-matched controls (n = 364) residing in Connecticut at diagnosis were interviewed between 1987 and 1989 about recreational and vacation activities, sun-protec

The impact of parental knowledge and tanning attitudes on sun protection practice for young children in Germany.

Public health campaigns have improved knowledge on UVR-associated skin cancer risk and increased sun protection awareness. However, tanned skin is still a common beauty ideal. The relationship between knowledge, attitudes and protective behavior is not fully understood yet. A population-based survey was thus performed in the district of Erlangen involving 2,619 parents of 3- to 6-year old children. By means of a self-administered standardized questionnaire parental knowledge about risk factors for skin cancer, their attitudes towards tanning and details of protective measures taken for their c

A comparison of patterns of sun protection during beach holidays and everyday outdoor activities in a population sample of young German children.

BACKGROUND: Reducing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main effective measure for preventing skin cancer. Educational campaigns targeting sun protection have been focused either on behaviour on the beach during the summer holiday alone, or during everyday outdoor activities of the children. Little is known about the comparison between these different settings. OBJECTIVES: To analyse whether parents apply similar protective measures to reduce UV exposure for their young children in different outdoor environments. METHODS: Families (n = 2619) with children aged 3-6 years (response:

Sunburn in children -- the Aberdeen experience.

Sun exposure in children is known to be a risk factor for the development of malignant melanoma in later life. The incidence of melanoma in the UK is increasing more rapidly than that of most other malignant tumours and there is now increasing awareness in adults of the necessity to protect against over-exposure and sunburn. However sun protection of children in the UK is generally less than optimum and it would appear that parents and children are unaware of the long-term risks of over-exposure to the sun. This study demonstrates significant morbidity from sunburn even in the temperate climes

Actinic keratosis: comprehensive review of current treatments and emerging therapeutic innovations.

Actinic keratosis (AK) is a prevalent benign intraepidermal dysplasia, classified as squamous cell carcinoma in situ (SCC in situ). Chronic ultraviolet (UV) light exposure is the primary etiological factor for AK, which predominantly manifests in sun-exposed areas. Management of AK emphasizes primary prevention through education, sun protection, and vigilant patient monitoring. Therapeutic strategies for AK are categorized into lesion-directed and field-directed approaches, encompassing topical treatments (imiquimod, 5-fluorouracil, diclofenac) and physical modalities (cryotherapy, photodynami

Update on sun protection and tanning in children.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: In this article we examine the latest information regarding pediatric sun protection and specifically focus on the impact of indoor tanning on children. RECENT FINDINGS: We examine and discuss the prevailing views and trends on ultraviolet radiation exposure, sun protection and the attendant adverse health effects among children. We identify the challenges related to limiting ambient ultraviolet exposure in children. As children, particularly adolescents, gain an understanding of sun protection, their use of ultraviolet radiation protection does not increase concordantly. W

Suppression of UV-induced damage by a liposomal sunscreen: a prospective, open-label study in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus and healthy controls.

This study aimed to determine whether a broad-spectrum liposomal sunscreen with a very high sun protection factor (Daylong actinica) can prevent damage induced by ultraviolet (UV) irradiation in patients with cutaneous lupus erythematosus (CLE) and healthy controls (HCs) under standardised conditions. In 20 patients with CLE and 10 HCs, defined areas of sunscreen-untreated and sunscreen-treated skin on the upper back were irradiated with combined UVA/UVB light. Disease-specific skin lesions were induced by UVA/UVB light in the untreated areas of nine patients with CLE; no specific eruptions or

Case-control study of malignant melanoma in Washington State. I. Constitutional factors and sun exposure.

Constitutional factors and sun exposure were examined among 256 cases of melanoma and 273 controls in three counties of western Washington State. Cases were individuals diagnosed with melanoma at ages 25-65 years during 1984-1987 who were identified from a Seattle-Puget Sound cancer registry. Population controls were identified through random digit dialing and were randomly selected, stratified by age, sex, and county. Participants completed a telephone interview with questions on demographic, sun exposure, and constitutional factors. Risk factors for melanoma were examined through the use of

Sunscreen effects on UV-induced immune suppression.

In order to protect the public against the adverse effects of sunlight, the scientific, medical, and particularly the dermatologic community has promoted "safe sun exposure." This strategy includes sun avoidance whenever possible, wearing hats and other protective clothing and/or devices, such as sunglasses, and extensive use of sunscreens. Sunscreen efficacy is determined by measuring the ability of the sunscreen to block ultraviolet (UV)-induced erythema (sun protection factor or SPF), and most sunscreen formulations on the market, if used properly, are very good at preventing erythema and s

Optimal sunscreen use, during a sun holiday with a very high ultraviolet index, allows vitamin D synthesis without sunburn.

BACKGROUND: Sunlight contains ultraviolet (UV)A and UVB radiation. UVB is essential for vitamin D synthesis but is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Sunscreen use is advocated to reduce the sun's adverse effects but may compromise vitamin D status. OBJECTIVES: To assess the ability of two intervention sunscreens to inhibit vitamin D synthesis during a week-long sun holiday. METHODS: The impact of sunscreens on vitamin D status was studied during a 1-week sun holiday in Tenerife (28° N). Comparisons were made between two formulations, each with a sun protection factor (SPF) of 15. Th

Linking the Ultraviolet Index to the "shadow rule" for sun protection: A theoretical model applied with a southern hemisphere example.

Personal solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) exposure has positive and negative impacts on human health. Excess solar UVR exposure can be avoided through safe sun practices such as using sun protection and avoiding unprotected outdoor exposure when solar UVR levels are high. The shadow rule indirectly determines the sun's altitude by observing the length of a person's shadow during the course of the day. When the shadow cast by the sun on a horizontal surface is shorter than the height of the person casting the shadow, the solar UVR intensity is high and is deemed to have more risk. The magnitud

Shirt designs for sun protection.

The objectives of the study reported here were to document consumer attitudes, risk understanding, and behaviors with respect to sun safety and to define consumer preferences for protective shirt design and labeling. A sample of 1,508 adults was surveyed at the 2002 Farm Progress Show sun-safety exhibit. Results showed that people generally understood the longterm risk from exposure to ultraviolet radiation, but did not routinely use sun-protective clothing to avoid it. Design features preferred by consumers for sun-safe shirts were significantly related to demographic characteristics, includi
