Artificial intelligence-driven triage in emergency departments: a comparative study of machine learning approaches.

OBJECTIVE: In emergency departments, accurate and timely triage plays a critical role in prioritizing patient care. Traditional triage often suffers from subjectivity and inconsistency, especially under time pressure and overcrowded conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive potential of multiple supervised machine learning models for three-class emergency department triage classification and compare their performance using routinely available triage variables. METHODS: We conducted a comparative analysis of eight supervised machine learning models using a retrospective

From conservation scores to language models: a feature engineering perspective on machine learning for genetic variant interpretation.

The interpretation of genetic variants remains central to precision medicine, and machine-learning-based variant effect prediction tools have become indispensable for supporting decision-making processes. In this review we trace the progression from hand-crafted features and traditional machine learning classifiers, through supervised ensembles, to deep-learning architectures and foundation models that learn representations directly from biological sequences. We classify methods for genetic variant effect prediction by underlying machine learning model and variant type handled, from missense t

Development of early prediction model for pregnancy-associated hypertension with graph-based semi-supervised learning.

Clinical guidelines recommend several risk factors to identify women in early pregnancy at high risk of developing pregnancy-associated hypertension. However, these variables result in low predictive accuracy. Here, we developed a prediction model for pregnancy-associated hypertension using graph-based semi-supervised learning. This is a secondary analysis of a prospective study of healthy pregnant women. To develop the prediction model, we compared the prediction performances across five machine learning methods (semi-supervised learning with both labeled and unlabeled data, semi-supervised l

Time-Conditioned Zero-Shot Self-Supervised Reconstruction for Accelerated 3D Ultra-Low-Field MRI.

PURPOSE: Ultra-low-field (ULF) MRI provides a cost-effective, portable imaging option but has relatively low SNR and long acquisition times compared to standard clinical scans. This study presents a time-conditioned zero-shot self-supervised learning image reconstruction framework (ULF-ZS-SSL) to accelerate 3D-acquired single-coil ULF MRI without relying on external training data. In addition, for faster computation, a transfer-learning (TL) variant (ULF-ZS-SSL-TL) was implemented by pretraining on a small fully-sampled ULF brain dataset and fine-tuning on the target subject in a zero-shot man

Self-Supervised OCT Representation Learning with Local Dimensionality Regularization for Automated Retinal Disease Diagnosis.

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a high-resolution and non-contact optical imaging and sensing modality that provides depth-resolved cross-sectional visualization of retinal microstructures. It plays an important role in the assessment of retinal diseases, including age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic macular edema (DME). However, automated OCT image classification commonly relies on fully supervised models that require large-scale expert annotations, which are costly and time-consuming because of the complex layered anatomy and subtle pathological patterns present in reti

Semi-Supervised Vertebra Segmentation and Identification in CT Images.

Background/Objectives: Automatic segmentation and identification of vertebrae in spinal CT are essential for assisting diagnosis of spinal disorders and for preoperative planning. The task is challenging due to the high structural similarity between adjacent vertebrae and the morphological variability of vertebrae. Most existing methods rely on fully supervised deep learning and, constrained by limited annotations, struggle to remain robust in complex scenarios. Methods: We propose a semi-supervised approach built on a dual-branch 3D U-Net. Mamba modules are inserted between the encoder and de

Self-supervised deep metric learning for prototypical zero-shot lesion retrieval in placenta whole-slide images.

Postnatal adverse outcomes can often be explained and predicted by the pathological evaluation of the placenta after a pregnancy. However, placenta whole-slide image (WSI) analysis is not performed systematically due to the specialized skills required. There is no public dataset available for placenta WSIs and precise annotations on private datasets are very limited. Furthermore, we show that in this context of low data regime and scarcity of expert annotations, current computational pathology foundation models struggle to generalize to the specific case of the placental tissue. We propose a n

MedScale-Former: Self-guided multiscale transformer for medical image segmentation.

Accurate medical image segmentation is crucial for enabling automated clinical decision procedures. However, existing supervised deep learning methods for medical image segmentation face significant challenges due to their reliance on extensive labeled training data. To address this limitation, our novel approach introduces a dual-branch transformer network operating on two scales, strategically encoding global contextual dependencies while preserving local information. To promote self-supervised learning, our method leverages semantic dependencies between different scales, generating a superv

FaceTouch: Detecting hand-to-face touch with supervised contrastive learning to assist in tracing infectious diseases.

Through our respiratory system, many viruses and diseases frequently spread and pass from one person to another. Covid-19 served as an example of how crucial it is to track down and cut back on contacts to stop its spread. There is a clear gap in finding automatic methods that can detect hand-to-face contact in complex urban scenes or indoors. In this paper, we introduce a computer vision framework, called FaceTouch, based on deep learning. It comprises deep sub-models to detect humans and analyse their actions. FaceTouch seeks to detect hand-to-face touches in the wild, such as through video

SCAC: A Semi-Supervised Learning Approach for Cervical Abnormal Cell Detection.

Cervical abnormal cell detection plays a crucial role in the early screening of cervical cancer. In recent years, some deep learning-based methods have been proposed. However, these methods rely heavily on large amounts of annotated images, which are time-consuming and labor-intensive to acquire, thus limiting the detection performance. In this paper, we present a novel Semi-supervised Cervical Abnormal Cell detector (SCAC), which effectively utilizes the abundant unlabeled data. We utilize Transformer as the backbone of SCAC to capture long-range dependencies to mimic the diagnostic process o

Artificial intelligence-powered early identification of refractory constipation in children.

BACKGROUND: Children experiencing refractory constipation, resistant to conventional pharmacological approaches, develop severe symptoms that persist into adulthood, leading to a substantial decline in their quality of life. Early identification of refractory constipation may improve their management. We aimed to describe the characteristics of colonic anatomy in children with different types of constipation and develop a supervised machine-learning model for early identification. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patient characteristics and standardized colon size (SCS) ratios by barium

Development of an Explainable Machine Learning Computational Model for the Prediction of Severe Complications After Orchiectomy in Stallions.

The objective of the present study was to apply supervised Machine Learning to predict severe complications after equine orchiectomy. A dataset of 612 cases of orchiectomies in stallions was used for the development of a computational model, among which in 8.5% of cases severe complications (colic, continued stallion-like behaviour, evisceration, funiculitis, haemorrhage, and scrotal infection) were diagnosed post-orchiectomy. Three supervised Machine Learning tools were employed: Logistic Regression (12 different models evaluated), Random Forest (64 models), and Gradient Boosting (8 models).

Joint semi-supervised and contrastive learning enables domain generalization and multi-domain segmentation.

Despite their effectiveness, current deep learning models face challenges with images coming from different domains with varying appearance and content. We introduce SegCLR, a versatile framework designed to segment images across different domains, employing supervised and contrastive learning simultaneously to effectively learn from both labeled and unlabeled data. We demonstrate the superior performance of SegCLR through a comprehensive evaluation involving three diverse clinical datasets of 3D retinal Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) images, for the slice-wise segmentation of fluids with

Developing a 10-Layer Retinal Segmentation for MacTel Using Semi-Supervised Learning.

PURPOSE: Automated segmentation software in optical coherence tomography (OCT) devices is usually developed for and primarily tested on common diseases. Therefore segmentation accuracy of automated software can be limited in eyes with rare pathologies. METHODS: We sought to develop a semisupervised deep learning segmentation model that segments 10 retinal layers and four retinal features in eyes with Macular Telangiectasia Type II (MacTel) using a small labeled dataset by leveraging unlabeled images. We compared our model against popular supervised and semisupervised models, as well as conduc

Cluster-Re-Supervision: Bridging the Gap Between Image-Level and Pixel-Wise Labels for Weakly Supervised Medical Image Segmentation.

Weakly supervised learning, releasing deep learning from highly labor-intensive pixel-wise annotations, has gained great attention, especially for medical image segmentation. With only image-level labels, pixel-wise segmentation/localization usually is achieved based on class activation maps (CAMs) containing the most discriminative regions. One common consequence of CAM-based approaches is incomplete foreground segmentation, i.e. under-segmentation/false negatives. Meanwhile, suffering from relatively limited medical imaging data, class-irrelevant tissues can hardly be suppressed during class
