Effects of quetiapine and sertindole on subchronic ketamine-induced deficits in attentional set-shifting in rats.

RATIONALE: Prefrontal cortical dysfunctions, including an impaired ability to shift perceptual attentional set, are core features of schizophrenia. Nevertheless, the effectiveness of second-generation antipsychotic drugs in treating specific prefrontal dysfunctions remains equivocal. OBJECTIVES: To model schizophrenia-like cognitive inflexibility in rats, we evaluated the effects of repeated administration of ketamine, the noncompetitive antagonist of the N-methyl-D: -aspartate receptor, after a washout period of 14 days in the attentional set-shifting task (ASST). Next, we investigated wheth

Using phase shift Granger causality to measure directed connectivity in EEG recordings.

Cortical activity is maintained by neural networks working in tandem. Electroencephalographic (EEG) signals across two sites are said to be coherent with one another when they show consistent phase relations. However, periods of desynchrony beginning with a shift in phase relations are a necessary aspect of information processing. Traditional measures of EEG coherence lack the temporal resolution required to divide the relationship between two signals into periods of synchrony and desynchrony and are unable to specify the direction of information transmission (i.e., which site is leading and w

A deficit in attentional set-shifting of violent offenders.

BACKGROUND: Recent brain imaging studies suggest that proneness to violence and antisocial behaviour may be associated with dysfunction of the prefrontal cortex. The present study. therefore, examined aspects of prefrontally guided executive functions in a group of criminal violent men. METHODS: Violent offenders undergoing forensic psychiatric examination by court order undertook computerized tasks for planning, visual working memory and attentional set-shifting from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery. Their performance was compared to that of subjects with marginal ment

The Cognitive Profile in Adolescents With Anorexia Nervosa and the Relationship With Autism and ADHD: A Pilot Study.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the cognitive profile in adolescents with anorexia nervosa (AN) and its association with traits of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and ADHD. In addition, resemblance in the cognitive profile between youths with AN and their parents was explored. METHODS: Adolescent females with acute AN (n = 20) and a healthy comparison group (n = 28) completed neuropsychological tasks of set-shifting (Trail making test, Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) and central coherence (Rey Complex Figures Task, Group Embedded Figures Test, object assembly subtest). In the AN group, mothers and

Attentional control moderates the relationship between social anxiety symptoms and attentional disengagement from threatening information.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Social anxiety is characterized by biased attentional processing of social information. However, heterogeneity of extant findings suggests that it may be informative to elucidate individual difference factors that modulate the processing of emotional information. The current study examined whether individual differences in components of attentional control (AC--shifting and focusing) moderated the link between social anxiety and attentional engagement and disengagement biases for threat-relevant cues. METHODS: Seventy-five undergraduate students completed well-estab

Age-related neural correlates of cognitive task performance under increased postural load.

Behavioral studies suggest that postural control requires increased cognitive control and visuospatial processing with aging. Consequently, performance can decline when concurrently performing a postural and a demanding cognitive task. We aimed to identify the neural substrate underlying this effect. A demanding cognitive task, requiring visuospatial transformations, was performed with varying postural loads. More specifically, old and young subjects performed mental rotations of abstract figures in a seated position and when standing on a force platform. Additionally, functional magnetic reso

Latencies of stimulus-driven eye movements are shorter in dyslexic subjects.

Eye movements latencies toward peripherally presented stimuli were measured in 10-year-old dyslexic and control children. Dyslexic subjects, previously found to be oversensitive to stimulation of the magnocellular channel, showed reduced latencies as compared to normally reading controls. An attention shifting task was also used which showed no group differences in latencies of eye movements. The data are discussed in terms of the hypothesis of magnocellular system alteration and attention dysfunction in dyslexia. Additionally, sex differences in eye movement latencies were found and are discu

Adolescent female valproic acid rats have impaired extra-dimensional shifts of attention and enlarged anterior cingulate cortices.

In order to develop better treatments for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) it is critical to understand the developmental trajectory of the disorder and the accompanying brain changes. This study used the valproic acid (VPA) model to induce ASD-like symptoms in rodents. Prior studies have demonstrated that VPA animals are impaired on executive function tasks, paralleling results in humans with ASD. Here, VPA adolescent female rats were impaired on a set-shifting task and had enlarged frontal cortices compared to control females. The deficits observed in the VPA female rats mirrors results in fem

Cross-modal distractors modulate oscillatory alpha power: the neural basis of impaired task performance.

Unexpected novel sounds capture one's attention, even when irrelevant to the task pursued (e.g., playing video game). This often comes at a cost to the task (e.g., slower responding). The neural basis for this behavioral distraction effect is not well understood and is subject of this study. Our approach was motivated by findings from cuing paradigms suggesting a link between modulations in oscillatory activity and voluntary attention shifts. The current study tested whether oscillatory activity is also modulated by a task-irrelevant auditory distractor, reflecting a neural signature of an inv

The metacognitive paradox of OCD: confidence is globally reduced but shows increased sensitivity to local evidence.

Confidence is a critical metacognitive signal that guides performance. Biases in confidence, such as excessive doubt, are hallmark features of mental health disorders, especially obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Yet, the underlying neurocognitive mechanisms and how they link to learning and decision-making remain elusive. We asked patients with OCD and matched healthy controls to perform a novel rule-shifting task incorporating trial-by-trial confidence ratings. Using a Bayes-optimal model, we identified two distinct confidence biases: while patients with OCD indicated lower overall confid

Rough Auditory Alarms Mitigate Inattentional Deafness During Piloting-Like Task.

ObjectiveTo assess the efficiency of rough auditory alarms in capturing attention during a piloting-like task under high mental workload that may induce inattentional deafness.BackgroundUnder high mental workload and stress, pilots may experience inattentional deafness, leading them to miss critical auditory warnings. This results from early inhibition of the primary auditory cortex by prefrontal areas, shifting auditory processing oscillations from gamma to alpha frequencies. Recent studies suggest that roughness-an auditory perceptual feature of natural alarm signals generated by amplitude-m

Is adaptation involved in bilingual language production? A fresh look at the assumptions motivating potential bilingual-monolingual differences in adaptive control.

One of the hottest debates in psychology-whether bilingual-monolingual differences exist in cognitive control-is at a stalemate. Here we propose that the stalemate could be broken by shifting the research focus from whether those differences emerge to why they should. We offer an example of this approach by testing the assumption of current theories of language-control associations that adaptive control is involved in bilingualism, specifically language production. Unbalanced Italian-English bilinguals living in the Milan area completed a Stroop task in their L1 and a picture-naming task in th

Intact general and food-specific task-switching abilities in bulimia-spectrum eating disorders.

OBJECTIVE: Prior work evaluating cognitive flexibility (i.e., the ability to alter behavior in response to environmental changes) in bulimia-spectrum eating disorders (BN-ED) has produced mixed findings, perhaps due to reliance on set-shifting paradigms that do not effectively isolate cognitive flexibility. Task-switching paradigms are more precise, but no study has examined task-switching in BN-ED. Further, no study has examined whether cognitive flexibility deficits in BN-ED are disorder-specific (e.g., confined to food-related responses). Thus, the present study re-evaluated cognitive flexi

Neural mechanisms underlying cognitive inflexibility in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a review.

Cognitive inflexibility, a reduced capacity to shift mental set or update behavior when circumstances change, is a significant feature of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). However, while cognitive inflexibility is superficially a coherent entity, it appears to engage a range of distinct cognitive processes. This raises the question of how far deficits in different tasks involve the same core dysfunction and how far the dysfunctions are unique but superficially have similar results. Here we detail the neural basis of OCD deficits across eight tasks that challenge different aspects of cogniti

Temporal stability of reference frames in monkey area V6A during a reaching task in 3D space.

Neurons in the posterior parietal cortex of macaques show spatial tuning during several phases of an instructed delay reaching task, but their reference frames have been studied mostly during fixed periods without addressing how they evolve across task phases. In parietal area V6A, we reported recently that during the late delay and hand movement periods, most neurons represent target location either in body-centered frame of reference, or in mixed body/hand-centered coordinates, with no evidence of hand-centered representations. Here, we characterized the spatial representations of V6A neuron

Barriers and Facilitators to Oral HIV Pre-exposure Prophylaxis Use in Australia: A Scoping Review Comparing Findings to Canada, New Zealand, and the United Kingdom.

Oral HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is highly effective, yet various barriers limit its potential as a HIV prevention strategy. This scoping review aimed to identify and quantify determinants of oral PrEP initiation and continuation among community members, and provision by healthcare providers in Australia and comparable countries (UK, Canada, and New Zealand). Three databases were searched in January 2025 for original studies published between January 2018 and December 2024. We considered papers published in English from the four countries that contained primary research exploring deter

Within-person increase in pathological worry predicts future depletion of unique executive functioning domains.

BACKGROUND: Affective neuroscience and scar theories propose that increased excessive worry, the hallmark symptom of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), predicts future declines in executive functioning (EF). However, the preponderance of cross-sectional designs used to examine between-person chronic worry-EF relationships has blocked progress on understanding their potentially causal within-person associations. Accordingly, this study used bivariate dual latent change score (LCS) models to test whether within-person increased GAD severity might relate to future reduced EF. METHODS: Community

Loss of GluN2A-containing NMDA receptors impairs extra-dimensional set-shifting.

Glutamate neurotransmission via the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) is thought to mediate the synaptic plasticity underlying learning and memory formation. There is increasing evidence that deficits in NMDAR function are involved in the pathophysiology of cognitive dysfunction seen in neuropsychiatric disorders and addiction. NMDAR subunits confer different physiological properties to the receptor, interact with distinct intracellular postsynaptic scaffolding and signaling molecules, and are differentially expressed during development. Despite these known differences, the relative contri

The impact of comprehensive training on safe cesarean delivery on non-physician surgeons' knowledge in Tigray, Ethiopia: a pre- and post-test embedded mixed-methods study.

BACKGROUND: In Ethiopia, non-physician surgeons, such as Integrated Emergency Surgical Officers (IESOs) and MSc Clinical Midwives, provide critical comprehensive emergency obstetric and surgical care in areas, where physician shortages persist. Although task shifting has improved access to maternal healthcare services in many low-resource settings, maternal and newborn mortality remain high, particularly in the conflict-affected Tigray region. This study aimed to assess the impact of a comprehensive training program on safe cesarean delivery, essential newborn care, and obstetric anesthesia on
