Protein-based coating strategy for preparing durable sunlight-driven rechargeable antibacterial, super hydrophilic, and UV-resistant textiles.

With the improvement of the hygiene awareness and pathogen prevention awareness of patients and medical staff, textiles with efficient and long-lasting pathogen inactivation effects are urgently needed. Photodynamic therapy (PDT) has rapidly developed into a new type of antibacterial technology due to its high antibacterial activity and has received widespread attention. However, the commonly used photosensitizers are mostly inorganic nanomaterials, which have poor adhesion to textiles and are not environmentally or human friendly. Here, we report a strategy of preparation of a sunlight-driven

Fabrication of Multifunctional Electronic Textiles Using Oxidative Restructuring of Copper into a Cu-Based Metal-Organic Framework.

This paper describes a novel synthetic approach for the conversion of zero-valent copper metal into a conductive two-dimensional layered metal-organic framework (MOF) based on 2,3,6,7,10,11-hexahydroxytriphenylene (HHTP) to form Cu3(HHTP)2. This process enables patterning of Cu3(HHTP)2 onto a variety of flexible and porous woven (cotton, silk, nylon, nylon/cotton blend, and polyester) and non-woven (weighing paper and filter paper) substrates with microscale spatial resolution. The method produces conductive textiles with sheet resistances of 0.1-10.1 MΩ/cm2, depending on the substrate, and un

Heavy metals in leathers, artificial leathers, and textiles in the context of quality and safety of use.

The article presents research findings on the content of arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, and zinc in extracts from leathers, artificial leathers intended for footwear components, and textiles. After extracting the metals using an artificial acidic sweat solution, their contents were quantitatively determined by atomic absorption spectrometry. In the cotton textiles, the metal contents were in accordance with the OEKO-TEX limits, while regarding the artificial leathers, only the acrylic knit fur had a too high chromium content (1.1 mg/kg) as compared with the requirements of the STAND

Durable antimicrobial cotton textiles coated sonochemically with ZnO nanoparticles embedded in an in-situ enzymatically generated bioadhesive.

An important preventive measure for providing a bacteria-free environment for the patients is the introduction of highly efficient and durable antibacterial textiles in hospitals. This work describes a single step sono-enzymatic process for coating of cotton medical textiles with antibacterial ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) and gallic acid (GA) to produce biocompatible fabrics with durable antibacterial properties. Cellulose substrates, however, need pre-activation to achieve sufficient stability of the NPs on their surface. Herein, this drawback is overcome by the simultaneous sonochemical depositio

Characterization of Textiles Used in Chefs' Uniforms for Protection Against Thermal Hazards Encountered in the Kitchen Environment.

Within the kitchen the potential for burn injuries arising from contact with hot surfaces, flames, hot liquid, and steam hazards is high. The chef's uniform can potentially offer some protection against such burns by providing a protective barrier between the skin and the thermal hazard, although the extent to which can provide some protection is unknown. The purpose of this study was to examine whether fabrics used in chefs' uniforms were able to provide some protection against thermal hazards encountered in the kitchen. Fabrics from chefs' jackets and aprons were selected. Flammability of si

[Simultaneous determination of 11 volatile perfluorinated compound precursors in textiles using gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry].

Perfluorinated compounds (PFCs) are persistent organic compounds. PFCs are artificially prepared hydrocarbons in which hydrogen atoms are completely replaced by fluorine. PFCs have excellent thermal stability and chemical stability, high surface activity, and hydrophobic and/or oleophobic properties owing to their exceptionally strong C-F bonds, low polarizability, and weak intermolecular van der Waals interactions. Currently, PFCs and their precursors are widely used in textile production as finishing agents and surfactants. In recent years, increasing attention has been devoted to PFCs and t

Development of a quantitative method for the analysis of cocaine analogue impregnated into textiles by Raman spectroscopy.

Cocaine trafficking in the form of textile impregnation is routinely encountered as a concealment method. Raman spectroscopy has been a popular and successful testing method used for in situ screening of cocaine in textiles and other matrices. Quantitative analysis of cocaine in these matrices using Raman spectroscopy has not been reported to date. This study aimed to develop a simple Raman method for quantifying cocaine using atropine as the model analogue in various types of textiles. Textiles were impregnated with solutions of atropine in methanol. The impregnated atropine was extracted usi

Influence of wetness on the ultraviolet protection factor (UPF) of textiles: in vitro and in vivo measurements.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Clothing is an important product for sunburn protection and skin cancer prevention. The moisture content of a fabric, which can increase during its wearing, may decrease the fabric's capability of protecting the skin from solar UV radiation, that is, lower its UPF (ultraviolet protection factor). Due to limited data about the effect of fabric wetness on UPF, this study was undertaken to investigate the following: (a) the effect of saturating a variety of fabrics with tap water and with salt water on fabric UPF and (b) whether wetted-fabric UPF values reflect only the fact t

Boron nitride nanotube fibers with over 1 GPa strength and 1000 °C stability for exceptional neutron shielding textiles.

Integrating boron nitride nanotubes (BNNTs) into robust macroscopic architectures for deep space radiation shielding remains a fundamental challenge. Here, we report continuous self-assembled all-nanotube (SAAN) fibers with an 80 wt% BNNT loading, combining tensile strength exceeding 1 GPa with extreme thermal stability from -196 to 1200 °C. These fibers originate from the thermodynamic co-assembly of BNNTs and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) into a lyotropic liquid crystalline mesophase. This shear-responsive dope enables cooperative reorientation and dense nanotube packing during wet-spinning. When

Antifungal Effect of Non-Woven Textiles Containing Polyhexamethylene Biguanide with Sophorolipid: A Potential Method for Tinea Pedis Prevention.

Tinea pedis is a preventable skin disease common in elderly or diabetic patients. Daily foot washing is effective for prevention, but can be difficult for many patients. Additionally, conventional methods cannot eliminate fungi within the stratum corneum, a common site for fungal invasion. This study investigates the antifungal effects, cytotoxicity, permeability, and efficacy of non-woven textiles containing polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB) mixed with sophorolipid. Permeability of PHMB with varying concentrations of sophorolipid was assessed via a cultured skin model. Stratum corneum PHMB c

Embroidered textile sensors for real-time multiaxial force mapping in prosthetics.

Real-time monitoring of pressure and shear forces at the limb-socket interface is essential for optimizing prosthetic fit, comfort, and skin health. Shear forces, in particular, can aggravate irritation and cause ulceration near bony prominences, making their detection as important as pressure. However, current in-socket sensing systems-typically based on strain gages, piezoresistive films, or optical mechanisms-remain largely limited to normal pressure detection and often rely on socket modifications or rigid multilayered components, constraining seamless integration with the compliant limb-s

Programmable robotic textile with closed-loop self-sensing and active actuation.

Robotic textiles that autonomously sense biological and environmental signals and perform closed-loop adaptive actuation represent a new paradigm for intelligent human-machine interfaces in precision medicine and human augmentation. However, mechanical incompatibility of their constituent materials and architectures, unstable sensing during dynamic human-machine interaction, and high-voltage safety concerns significantly restrict their reliable applications. Herein, a low-voltage-driven untethered robotic textile interlacing all-in-one core-sheath liquid metal (LM)-liquid crystal elastomer (LC

Mechanical Durability of Polymer-Encapsulated Electronic Yarns for Electronic Textile Applications.

This study presents a standalone yarn-level assessment of the mechanical and functional durability of polymer-encapsulated electronic yarns (E-yarns) for wearable electronic textile applications. The investigated E-yarns consisted of miniaturised electronic components soldered onto fine conductive wires, protected by polymer encapsulation, and enclosed within braided textile yarn structures. This heterogeneous architecture enables textile-compatible functionality but creates local regions that may be susceptible to damage under various deformation modes. E-yarns incorporating light-emitting di

Flexible Textile-Based Hybrid Piezoresistive Sensors for Human-Motion Monitoring.

Textile-based sensors offer a promising platform for human-motion monitoring because of their flexibility, comfort, and ease of integration into clothing. The objective of this study was to develop a textile-based hybrid piezoresistive sensor by combining carbon black (CB) and carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with different filler geometries within a flexible poly[styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene] (SEBS) matrix. The novelty of the proposed approach lies in incorporating CB and CNFs into the same elastomeric sensing layer directly deposited onto an elastic knitted textile substrate and system

Removal of textile microplastic fibers from water by photo-Fenton oxidation.

Microplastic fibers (MFs) from synthetic garments pose a growing environmental challenge, as their release during domestic laundry cycles and persistence in wastewater have facilitated their dispersion in aquatic ecosystems, as well as their accumulation along the food chain. In this context, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), capable of breaking down refractory organic pollutants, emerge as a promising alternative to mitigate this issue. In this study, the effectiveness of photo-Fenton to remove PET MFs was evaluated by quantifying their weight loss. Physical and chemical changes in the fib

Joint aerobic biodegradation of synthetic and natural textile microfibers and laundry surfactants.

Microfibers (MFs) represent one of the most prominent sources of microplastics in aquatic environments, primarily released during textile washing alongside surfactants found in laundry detergents. This study aimed to investigate the biodegradability of natural (cotton) and synthetic (polyester) MFs individually and in combination with two surfactants: sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS, anionic) and polyoxyethylene glycerol ester (PGE-OE6, nonionic). Using the OECD 301 F test, the research assessed biodegradation patterns and environmental interactions. Biodegradation profiles have been fitted to a ps
