Ten years of surveillance of the Yulong plague focus in China and the molecular typing and source tracing of the isolates.

Plague, caused by Yersinia pestis, was classified as a reemerging infectious disease by the World Health Organization. The five human pneumonic plague cases in Yulong County in 2005 gave rise to the discovery of a Yulong plague focus in Yunnan province, China. Thereafter, continuous wild rodent plague (sylvatic plague) was identified as the main plague reservoir of this focus. In this study, the epizootics in Yulong focus were described, and three molecular typing methods, including the different region (DFR) analysis, clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPRs), and th

Variants of Epas1 contribute to hypoxia adaptation in the subterranean rodents Eospalax and Spalax.

Oxygen-sensing and the hypoxia stress response play vital roles in physiological homeostasis. Subterranean species that are naturally adapted to hypoxia provide powerful tools for understanding the mechanisms of hypoxia tolerance. The plateau zokor Eospalax baileyi and the Gansu zokor Eospalax cansus, which inhabit the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau of China, and the blind mole rat Spalax galili, which lives in Israel, are all subterranean rodents adapted to hypoxic environments. Here, we showed that the T480S variant of the hypoxia-inducible factor-2ɑ (encoded by the endothelial PAS domain protein 1 g

Seroprevalence and associated risk factors of Toxoplasma gondii infection in yaks (Bos grunniens) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau of China.

Toxoplasma gondii is an intracellular parasite that is extensively prevalent globally. Studies have indicated the presence of T. gondii infection in animals in some provinces of China, but little is known about T. gondii infection in yaks (Bos grunniens) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. In the current study, to determine the seroprevalence and associated risk factors of T. gondii, a total of 2784 serum samples were collected from 18 different sampling sites in eight counties of the Qinghai and Tibet regions of China from 2018 to 2019. Serum antibodies against T. gondii were detected in 261 yaks

Photodegradation Unlocks Permafrost Carbon in Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau Rivers.

High-altitude rivers on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau serve as distinctive photochemical reactors, where intense solar radiation interacts with ancient carbon reservoirs to fundamentally reshape the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM). Based on isotopic tracers (δ2H, δ18O, δ3H, Δ14C, and δ13C) and molecular-level characterization with 7979 unique formulas identified along the Yarlung Tsangpo River, we reveal a synergistic control of sunlight and carbon source on DOM cycling. Isotopic signatures indicate considerable inputs of "old water" (i.e., glacial meltwater) and confirm permafrost-derive

Dietary patterns related to attention and physiological function in high-altitude migrants.

High altitude exposure negatively affects human attentional function. However, no studies have explored the regulation of attentional and physiological functions from a dietary perspective. A total of 116 Han Chinese students from Tibet University who were born and raised in a plain area and had been living in Tibet for > 2 years were recruited. All participants were male migrants. A food frequency questionnaire, complete blood count, and attention network test were performed on the participants. Pearson's correlation was applied to assess the reliability and validity of the food frequency que

Small signaling molecules in plant response to cold stress.

Cold stress is one of the harsh environmental stresses that adversely affect plant growth and crop yields in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. However, plants have evolved mechanisms to overcome the impact of cold stress. Progress has been made in understanding how plants perceive and transduce low-temperature signals to tolerate cold stress. Small signaling molecules are crucial for cellular signal transduction by initiating the downstream signaling cascade that helps plants to respond to cold stress. These small signaling molecules include calcium, reactive oxygen species, nitric oxide, hydrogen su

Human plague associated with Tibetan sheep originates in marmots.

The Qinghai-Tibet plateau is a natural plague focus and is the largest such focus in China. In this area, while Marmota himalayana is the primary host, a total of 18 human plague outbreaks associated with Tibetan sheep (78 cases with 47 deaths) have been reported on the Qinghai-Tibet plateau since 1956. All of the index infectious cases had an exposure history of slaughtering or skinning diseased or dead Tibetan sheep. In this study, we sequenced and compared 38 strains of Yersinia pestis isolated from different hosts, including humans, Tibetan sheep, and M. himalayana. Phylogenetic relationsh

Environmental conditions and animal hosts shape the spatial transmission risks of echinococcosis in China.

Echinococcosis poses a major public-health challenge and substantial socioeconomic burdens in pastoral regions. Yet the spatial transmission risks in China and their drivers remain insufficiently understood. Using a national cross-sectional survey of human and animal echinococcosis (2012-2016), we applied ensemble machine-learning models to identify environmental determinants of disease distribution, predict infection risk in animal hosts, and project human transmission risk. Model-predicted animal-host infection risk increased under humid, low-temperature conditions. Human cystic echinococcos

Light heterogeneity shapes contrasting ecological responses to photovoltaic arrays in Tibetan alpine grasslands.

Alpine grassland ecosystems are highly sensitive to climatic fluctuations and anthropogenic disturbances. The construction and operation of photovoltaic (PV) power stations may alter environmental conditions, yet the relationships among PV-induced microenvironmental changes, vegetation responses, and soil processes remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated two PV power stations located in alpine meadow and alpine steppe settings, integrating microenvironmental monitoring, vegetation surveys, soil measurements, correlation analyses, and partial least squares path modeling to char

Methane cycling in typical emerging proglacial lakes on the Tibetan Plateau: Insights into the metabolic mechanisms mediated by microorganisms.

A large number of high-latitude emerging proglacial lakes have formed on the Tibetan Plateau (TP) due to the global warming and deglaciation. These lakes have the potential to emit methane (CH4) because of the exposure of cryopreserved organic carbon, leading to their significance in regional carbon turnover and cycling. However, previous studies have focused more on human-impacted lakes (e.g., eutrophic lakes), resulting in limited research on the mechanisms of CH4 cycling in the proglacial lakes. In this study, we demonstrated that three typical emerging high-latitude proglacial lakes (∼5500

mtDNA from the early Bronze Age to the Roman period suggests a genetic link between the Indian subcontinent and Mesopotamian cradle of civilization.

Ancient DNA methodology was applied to analyse sequences extracted from freshly unearthed remains (teeth) of 4 individuals deeply deposited in slightly alkaline soil of the Tell Ashara (ancient Terqa) and Tell Masaikh (ancient Kar-Assurnasirpal) Syrian archaeological sites, both in the middle Euphrates valley. Dated to the period between 2.5 Kyrs BC and 0.5 Kyrs AD the studied individuals carried mtDNA haplotypes corresponding to the M4b1, M49 and/or M61 haplogroups, which are believed to have arisen in the area of the Indian subcontinent during the Upper Paleolithic and are absent in people l

The Tibetan hare Lepus oiostolus: a novel intermediate host for Echinococcus multilocularis.

Multicystic hydatids have been found in the livers of hares ( Lepus oiostolus) examined from the Qinghai-Tibet plateau of China. In this study, the causative species was definitively identified as Echinococcus multilocularis by mitochondrial DNA sequencing. This is the first confirmation of larval E. multilocularis from hares. The hydatids contained protoscolices, suggesting that the hare may contribute to the transmission of E. multilocularis on the Tibetan plateau.

HIF-1 regulates energy metabolism of the Tibetan chicken brain during embryo development under hypoxia.

The Tibetan chicken (Gallus gallus; TBC) is an indigenous breed found in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau that are well adapted to a hypoxic environment. The energy metabolism of embryonic brains in TBCs under hypoxia has been little reported. This study investigated changes in energy metabolism of the TBC brain during embryo development under hypoxia. We found that TBCs exhibited a change of glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle during embryo development under hypoxia. Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1 was potentially involved in this by directly inducing overexpression of pyruvate dehydrogenas

Hydatid Pulmonary Embolism: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND Infection with Echinococcus granulosus is endemic in sheep and dogs in Central Asia, including Tibet. In humans, ingested parasites from the gastrointestinal system enter the liver via the portal vein. Rarely, hepatic hydatid cysts can rupture into the portal vein and embolize to the lungs. This report is of a 58-year-old woman with liver cysts and a pulmonary embolism due to hydatid disease. CASE REPORT We present a rare case of a pulmonary embolism caused by a hydatid cyst. A 58-year-old woman from the Tibet Autonomous Region of China was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of

Stepwise allelic trajectory of ETP2 underlies trade-off between UVB tolerance and submergence adaptation in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Strong UVB radiation critically restricts plant growth, yield, and distribution, while mechanisms enabling adaptation to intense UVB remain unclear. Here, we uncover that the F-box ubiquitin E3 ligase UVBT1 (also known as ETP2) is indispensable for UVB tolerance in A. thaliana. In the high-altitude Tibet accession, a distinctive 166-bp deletion in ETP2 promoter leads to the complete absence of the W-box element, thereby eliminating WRKY36-mediated transcriptional repression. This results in elevated ETP2 levels, which degrade EIN2 and activate the protective anthocyanin/flavonoid pathway. Conv

Influence of dietary supplementation with Bacillus velezensis on intestinal microbial diversity of mice.

Yaks are an aboriginal breed of the Qinghai-Tibet plateau (3000 m), which are highly adaptable to cold and hypoxic environments. It is noticed that hypoxia and hypothermia can induce changes in intestinal microbial structure in animals. Increasing evidences suggested that probiotics supplementation can improve the balance of gut microbiota of animals. However, so far, very few studies have emphasized on the probiotics isolated from yaks in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau. Therefore, a potential probiotic strain Bacillus velezensis was isolated from yaks. In the present study, a total of 18 Kunming m

The effects of irreversible electroporation on the stomach wall after ablating hepatic tissues.

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of irreversible electroporation (IRE) on the stomach wall after IRE was applied on liver tissues adjacent to the anterior wall of the stomach. IRE ablation was performed in eight Tibet mini-pigs with three lesions per pig. The IRE electrodes were inserted into the liver tissues situated close to the anterior wall of the stomach. As for the control group, the IRE electrodes were also inserted into the liver tissues for three lesions in four Tibet mini-pigs but did not turn on the current. Serum aminotransferase and WBC levels clearly increased in all the
