Fluralaner injectable suspension (Bravecto® injectable) for dogs remains effective against Ixodes ricinus infestations for one-year.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne pathogens are emerging in many regions worldwide with seasonal transmission often shifting to year-round transmission in temperate climatic zones due to climate change. This situation makes year-round protection against ticks advisable. The objective of the study was to confirm the efficacy of a single injection of fluralaner against Ixodes ricinus ticks for up to 56 weeks. METHODS: The study was a single-site, blinded, negative controlled, randomized efficacy study conducted with 20 female dogs. Dogs were randomized into two groups based on tick counts at pre-infestati

Projecting the potential distribution of ticks in China under climate and land use change.

Ticks are known as vectors of several pathogens causing various human and animal diseases including Lyme borreliosis, tick-borne encephalitis, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. While China is known to have more than 100 tick species well distributed over the country, our knowledge on the likely distribution of ticks in the future remains very limited, which hinders the prevention and control of the risk of tick-borne diseases. In this study, we selected four representative tick species which have different regional distribution foci in mainland China. i.e., Dermacentor marginatus, Dermacent

Lesser protein degradation machinery correlates with higher BM86 tick vaccine efficacy in Rhipicephalus annulatus when compared to Rhipicephalus microplus.

Infestations with cattle ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Rhipicephalus annulatus, economically impact cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Vaccines containing the recombinant R. microplus BM86 gut antigen were developed and commercialized to induce an immunological protection in cattle against tick infestations. These vaccines demonstrated that tick control by vaccination is cost-effective, reduces environmental contamination and prevents the selection of drug resistant ticks that result from repeated acaricide applications. The protection elicited

Tick-Borne Diseases in Turkey: A Review Based on One Health Perspective.

The importance of tick-borne diseases is increasing all over the world, including Turkey. Global warming, environmental and ecological changes and the existence of suitable habitats increase the impact of ticks and result in frequent emergence or re-emergence of tick-borne diseases (TBDs) with zoonotic characteristics. In Turkey, almost 19 TBDs have been reported in animals and men, involving four protozoa (babesiosis, theileriosis, cytauxzoonosis, hepatozoonosis), one filarial nematode (acanthocheilonemasis), ten bacterial agents (anaplasmosis, ehrlichiosis, aegyptianellosis, tick-borne typhu

Alterations in the salivary gland microbiota of Haemaphysalis longicornis during tick-to-host transmission of severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus.

Haemaphysalis longicornis serves as the primary tick vector for severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome virus (SFTSV), the etiological agent responsible for severe fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome (SFTS). Understanding alterations in tick salivary gland microbiota during SFTSV transmission to vertebrate hosts is essential for developing novel control strategies. However, microbial shifts in tick salivary glands during pathogen transmission to hosts have not been reported for any tick-borne pathogens. In this study, SFTSV transmission from H. longicornis to vertebrate hosts was confirme

Complement split products C3a and C4a are early markers of acute lyme disease in tick bite patients in the United States.

BACKGROUND: Current laboratory markers do not readily detect acute Lyme disease. We assessed the utility of complement and its split products as markers of Lyme disease in patients shortly after a tick bite. METHODS: Thirty-one consecutive acute Lyme disease patients, 14 with and 17 without erythema migrans (EM) skin rash, seen by a physician within 96 h of a tick bite were matched with 24 consecutive tick bite patients without Lyme disease symptoms and 46 healthy control subjects. Complement and split products measured included factor B, Bb, C4, C3c, C3a(des Arg), C4a(des Arg), C1q- and C3d-

Interactive effects of biological, human and environmental factors on tick loads in Boran cattle in tropical drylands.

BACKGROUND: Tick-borne diseases (TBDs) are a serious threat to humans, wildlife and livestock, and cause severe economic losses in many tropical drylands. The effective control of TBDs has been constrained by limited understanding of what determines tick loads in animals. We tested interactive effects of several biological factors (sex, age and body condition), one environmental factor (rainfall) and one human factor (management type) on tick loads in animals. METHODS: We collected ticks on animals at four sampling sites in the semi-arid savanna area of Laikipia County, Kenya, of which two ar

Tick bites, clinical symptoms of Lyme borreliosis, and Borrelia antibody responses in Finnish army recruits training in an endemic region during summer.

Tick bites, associated clinical symptoms, and antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi were investigated in 77 Finnish army recruits training during summer in an endemic region and 50 control recruits serving outside the habitat of ticks. During a follow-up of 6 months, 26.9% of the study recruits reported tick bites. None gave a history of erythema migrans. Five study recruits and none in the control group had a combination of two or three nonspecific symptoms compatible with Lyme borreliosis. Three of these five study recruits had been bitten by several ticks. Thirteen (16.9%) study recruits

Glutathione S-transferase affects permethrin detoxification in the brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus.

Control of ticks on dogs is often done by application of repellents that contain permethrin as the active ingredient. In this research, we studied the role of a glutathione S-transferase (GST) gene in detoxification of permethrin by ticks using a gene silencing method RNA interference (RNAi). The brown dog tick, Rhipicephalus sanguineus, used in these studies, has a notable host preference for dogs, but also infests other mammals. In this research, R. sanguineus females were injected with gst double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to effect gene silencing by RNAi and then exposed to sublethal doses of pe

Ticks (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting dogs in Nigeria: epidemiological and public health implications.

Ticks are haematophagous arthropods that exert direct and indirect effects on their hosts. Their global importance as reservoirs and vectors of diseases of veterinary and public health importance is well recognized. However, the level of understanding of their role in disease epidemiology varies from one country to the other based on available data. Information on ticks infesting dogs across Nigeria and the public health significance is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to provide information on ixodid ticks infesting dogs in Nigeria. Ticks were collected from 608 owned dogs presented to vet

The use of time-series analysis to forecast bont tick (Amblyomma hebraeum) infestations in Zimbabwe.

Studying the dynamics of tick infestations on cattle is an essential step in developing optimal strategies for tick control. Successful strategic tick control requires accurate predictions of when tick infestations will reach predetermined threshold levels. In the case of Amblyomma hebraeum, earlier work has shown that there is no consistent pattern of seasonal activity. This means that a statistical model for predicting A. hebraeum infestations cannot reliably use climatic factors as the only independent variables. An alternative method is to apply time-series, or auto-regressive moving-avera

Predictive Analytics of Cattle Host and Environmental and Micro-Climate Factors for Tick Distribution and Abundance at the Livestock-Wildlife Interface in the Lower Okavango Delta of Botswana.

Tick distribution and abundance is influenced by several factors that include micro-climate and environmental and host factors. Contextual understanding of the role played by these factors is critical to guide control measures. The aim of this study was to determine the predictive value of these factors for changes in tick distribution and abundance at the livestock-wildlife interface of the lower Okavango Delta. A two-stage quota sampling design was adopted to select 30 clusters of seven cattle each for tick investigation. Tick investigation was done by lifting the tail to count the total num

Evaluation of the Acaricidal Activity of Coumarin Derivatives Obtained by Chemical Synthesis Against the Cattle Tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus.

INTRODUCTION: Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus is a parasitic tick that significantly impacts livestock production through economic losses and the transmission of diseases. Resistance to conventional acaricides, such as organophosphates, has prompted the search for alternative control strategies. Coumarin derivatives (Cds), due to their structural diversity and biological activity, have emerged as promising candidates for tick management. METHODS: Twelve CDs were synthesized via Pechmann condensation under eco-friendly conditions and evaluated for acaricidal activity using the Adult Immers

Reproductive and safety assessment of vaccination with Gavac against the cattle tick (Boophilus microplus).

Recent developments in cattle tick control have incorporated the use of recombinant Bm86 vaccines against this ectoparasite. The vaccine developed by our group (Gavac) contains an antigen expressed in Pichia pastoris, and has been successfully employed for the control of tick infestations and transmission of tick-borne diseases. Here, we examined the safety and effect of the Gavac vaccine on reproductive parameters in cattle. Toxicity tests in mice and guinea pigs demonstrated the safety of Gavac. To study the adverse effects of vaccination on reproduction, a field trial involving 9,500 animal

Distribution and prevalence of ixodid tick species (Acari: Ixodidae) infesting cattle in Karamoja region of northeastern Uganda.

BACKGROUND: Ticks and tick-borne diseases (TTBDs) are a significant threat to livestock production in sub-Saharan Africa. Transhumance pastoralism practiced in Karamoja region and other factors like cattle trade, communal grazing and the presence of wildlife predispose cattle to TTBDs. Tick species abundance and distribution data can be used as a tool for early disease diagnosis and inform tick control strategies. However, these data for north-eastern Uganda are currently limited; previous surveys were relatively localized and targeted fewer cattle kraals and numbers. METHODS: We randomly col

Management and control of parasites on dairy farms in northwestern region of São Paulo state.

Dairy cattle farming is of great economic and social importance in all Brazilian's regions. Parasites can reduce milk productivity, especially the tick Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus. This study consisted of a questionnaire answered by 40 milk producers in the northwestern region of the State of São Paulo. The aim was to ascertain how these producers controlled ticks and other parasites. Very many of them knew nothing about the biological cycle of the cattle tick or about strategic control or acaricide efficacy tests. The majority (87.5%) controlled ticks at a high frequency, without tech
